Tex,
Glad to help - anytime, buddy. And yes, I will be at Sun-N-Fun (only
about 60 days to go). Will you be there in your new "jet"?
Blue Skies,
Buz

Subject: | Entering a Lightning into the NASA PAV Challenge? |
Hi all,
I noticed that Brien Seeley of the CAFE Foundation has been promoting
the foundation's Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) Challenge[1] contest on,
among other places, the Van's Airforce website run by Doug Reeves[2].
The thinking there is that an RV, with some mods to reduce noise, could
meet all the entry requirements. It occurs to me that if an RV could
meet the entry requirements then in theory an Arion Lightning could
too. While I don't think there is a lot of time left before the contest
is run later this year, it can't hurt to look at the rules to see if it
is plausible.

Jim,
I am pretty sure that the Lightning does meet the rules. The Jabiru
engine is quieter than what is going in the RV's I'm sure. I would consider
the Lighting to be a more technologically developed aircraft with cutting
edge manufacturing techniques. Go over to the Van's AirForce site though
and they'll tell you that there's no way that you can make an airplane go
faster with composites than metal. (had that conversation) Until they get
the performance on a lesser amount of horsepower and burning as little fuel
as we do in cruise though I think the record stands for itself. Brian W.

Hey Brian:
I love to hear what the Legacy FG guys think of that quote when they are
cruising around at 260mph with that same IO-360 looking back at the rivet
bangers?
Jim!
