Several Navy, Air Force, and Marine buddies, and I have used this guy bunches of times. He got started during the VN war as a kid selling models outside Clark AFB when we were going throught the Phillipines. He is probably the largest model maker on Luzon. I have not bought from him since I retired over 5 years ago. The quality is fantastic and you can trust him completely. His prices are half of what you will pay in the states. His company furnishes models to a lot of the retailers here in the states. http://www.aimhighmodelairplanes.com and go to Special Models. Scotty -------- Old pilots remember when flying was dangerous and sex was safe. Gudday everyone, Having just recently learnt of the Lightning's existence via the RAAust magazine, I was curious about the difference in the spec table on the website between the 2 versions. Based on the lower stall speed, lower overall speeds, higher climb rate and shorter take-off roll, the sport configuration must have a wing with a higher lift profile? Which version is being exported to countries like Australia to comply with local rules? Till reading Buz's commentary and all the other chat about the Esqual I was enthralled with it's performance, especially with the Airmaster constant speed prop. Thanks to all your great detail I'm convinced the Lightning is for me, so I'll have to visit Dennis Borchardt here in Oz and continue to save my pennies towards a deposit. I haven't noticed any discussion around adjustable props - any experiences from anyone would be worth sharing. The Airmaster website has a nice layman's explanation. Thanks again to everyone for your chat - it's a great way to learn for someone who's only able to put in a few hours flying here and there. Paul Smith, Angaston, South Australia. Paul & Irene, The big difference with the Light Sport model is that it has vortex generators that are attached to the wing. There is a template so that the VG's are attached at the right angles to get the desired results. They proved their effectiveness. So far all LS models have needed this to get the stall speed down in the clean configuration. The other difference is in the prop. The prop on the light sport is set more to a climb pitch, while the regular model is set to cruise. That is where a lot of your things like a slower cruise, a higher rate of climb come from in the Light Sport compliant version. Nobody has put a constant speed prop on the plane yet. Most have had a ground adjustable fixed pitch prop. They have worked well. The prop that you mentioned has been brought up, but I believe that Pete said that he had talked with the manufacturer and it was made for a slower cruise than the Lightning is capable of and becomes inefficient at speed. Once I complete my drag cleanup on the plane I fully believe that we'll get another 10mph out of cruise, or, we'll get same cruise with X.X gph fuel savings. Based on current and projected performance I believe that the ground adjustable prop, once set for your specific mission will be the way to go. Even with the cruise prop we're talking about really short takeoff and landing rolls. A very low and stable stall on either. Just my .02. Brian W. Well, I am not going to tell you that you may find a cheaper source for the desktop models, but here is a pic of a Titan that Bill did.....looks pretty good to me. If anyone is still interested, I need ONE more person to commit to ordering a Lightning...Bill is located in Noth Carolina, is a fellow pilot, and I think would make us some nice Lightning models. Up to you guys, I do not want to start a "we can get a desktop here, or here,"etc....Just did a bit of looking and thought I would pass it on. Again, I have never done any business with him, but I will get a model too if we can get the needed 5. Nick, or other guys in the know, I'm back in town now and ready to work on flying the time off of Rick's plane. I can be down there tomorrow if the plane is ready, got the bugs worked out, etc. I don't want to drive an hour and a half though if you guys are doing a head torque or something. Let me know. Subject: Re: Incredible Day at Green Landings
Hi everybody, Update on my big day: Although I bought a Lightning kit and have been in the build process for quite a while now, I never had seen the Lightning fly and have never flown one. I based my purchase on blind trust, something rare these days. I had a really good feeling about the plane's capabilities and was also heavily sold on the BRS parachute capability, cruise speed and fuel economy. The prototype couldn't carry passengers when I was airplane shopping last year, and I missed hte fly-by at Sun n Fun last year. While waiting for Ryan Gross (owner of Green Landings) to return to the grass strip at Green Landings (he had gone to another airport to give a demo ride), I heard a plane in the distance. By the looks of the tail, it appeared to be a Cessna. As it got closer, it got much faster and I realized it was Ryan in the Green Landings Lightning. From the ground, I was blown away by the aerial maneuvers, speed and handling of the plane. 90 degress banks looked split second and rolls looked like they only took a second. Ryan then did a high-speed fly by at an incredible clip. I kept thinking the whole time "Is this plane really doing all this on only 125 Horsepower?!". The plane far exceeds my expectations of what I expected. Not only am I getting a safe plane with a parachute, I am getting a fast and fuel efficient plane. One new adjective to describe what I am getting is aerobatic. This word was never in my vocabulary when shopping for a plane. It adds tremendous value to the plane. I kept thinking that the Lightning looked like an Extra 300 by the way it was flying. I knew it would have some aerobatic capabilities but I never expected to be comparing it to an Extra. The workmanship on my plane currently in construction is absolutely top notch. I recommend Green Landings to any future Lightning owners. Just so you know- THIS IS AN UNSOLICITED ENDORSEMNT- I was not asked by Green Landings to make this posting and I am not on anybody's payroll relevant to the Lightning aircraft. By the way, I did fly with Ryan after he landed, and we did some of the smae maneuvers. I did only one roll in my life and that was in a Glasair III. The Lightning rolls much faster. I haven't done any flying since August so I really couldn't stomach the G forces, so we had to come down. ALl in all, a great day. Oh, by the way, I was amazed at how well the Lightning does on grass WITH the wheel fairings- something I thought wouldn't work well at all. Can't wait to be flying my Own Lightning and spread the fun around. So Charles, Mine and Buz's unsolicited accounts were pretty accurate then you'd say? :-P I think a good product will sale itself by word of mouth and people gaining confidence that it will do what is advertised. For me the one thing that comes to mind if I had to describe it is "Fun" to the max. Really glad to get the chance to fly several of them. Hope your plane turns out as good as the others. Be sure to update us with pics once she's painted and mostly assembeled. Brian W. Dennis, is your computer out of ink? ;-) It appears to be an encoding problem either at their end or when Matronics forwards their messages. Believe it or not, their message is there - but it is "hidden" and depending on the e-mail software you use you should be able to "view" the "raw" e-mail. I use Mozilla Thunderbird and used the menu selection "View" -> "Message Source" to see what they had to say. To minimize people having problems reading my e-mails I have set my e-mail client to encode outgoing e-mail using "plain text". Hope this helps. Jim

Jim, Thanks for explaining all that, but based on what I understood, you might as well have been speaking Arabic to me. I am not what you might call computer literate. But I do feel better that others have had the same problem reading messages from Dennis. At least now I know my 'puter in not out of ink. ;-) Buz

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Hey Charles, Good report, and I am glad you are enjoying your Lightning build and your flight with Ryan. Now you know what we have been "grinning ear to ear" about. But if you are not careful, the secret will get out and everyone will want one. Just kidding of course, but do be careful about comparing it to an Extra (or any other aerobatic aircraft for that matter). Even though they may look somewhat similar, the Extra is designed to be an Unlimited Class aerobatic airplane. In the right pilot's hands, it competes and wins at the World Class level in aerobatic contest. In addition to the plus and minus "Gs" that it has been test flown to, it also has a much higher Va. The Lightning is advertised to not be an aerobatic airplane and I think we all know that for insurance purposes (both the designers and yours) that is best. Sure, you can get away with steep turns and aileron rolls (and such) but that certainly does not make an aerobatic aircraft. I don't want to slow down your enthusiasm, it is great, I just don't want the wrong idea to get out about what the Lightning is designed for. I have hesitated about sending this and taking a chance of dampening your enthusiasm, but I guess the bottom line is we both think the Lightning is an outstanding airplane for the mission profile that it was designed to meet. Add to that the quick build time and economical operation and the Lightning is definitely a winner. Charles: Glad to hear that you like the aircraft so much. Ryan was just coming back from giving me a demo. What a nice flying airplane! Unlike you though, I was depressed after my flight. It was because I like the airplane so much but just do not quite fit like I would like. I'm 6'1" with a torso of a 6'4" guy and shoulders like a linebacker, so I had to tilt my head slightly to keep from resting it against the canopy glass. I will say that the Lightning is very easy to fly but responsive too. Nice aircraft. The 3300 got us off the runway in short order with me sitting in there at 265 lbs, no problem. Guys, you have a very nice aircraft. I just wish it was about 3-4" wider up top. Best of luck to you Charles, you're gonna love it! Jim! -----Original Message----- From: owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Charles Dewey Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 6:17 PM Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Incredible Day at Green Landings Hi everybody, Update on my big day: Although I bought a Lightning kit and have been in the build process for quite a while now, I never had seen the Lightning fly and have never flown one. Jim, Don't give up just yet. The latest kits give more head room and more hip room. Nick designed a new molded seat pan to give more head room and narrowed the center console for the extra hip width. I am 6'2" and 215 to 225 depending on the time of the year. (I seem to gain weight in the winter even though I really don't hibernate.) And if you haven't met John Davis, he is a big boy, and seems to have no problems. So bottom line is: You really need to sit in one of the new Lightnings. The soon to be completed demonstrator will have the new seat set up. See it at Sun-N-Fun. For those of you with the older seat set up, you can order an upgrade "seat kit" from the SYI guys. Buz

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Boy Buzz. It would have to be at least three or so inches wider for me to be comfortable. I wish there was one close where I could try it. I'm ready to pull the trigger on an aircraft. _____ From: owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of N1BZRich@aol.com Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 10:36 PM Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Incredible Day at Green Landings Jim, Don't give up just yet.
