That's a tough one, but I think that I prefer the red. Is that orangish

I am a "red" person (cars, trucks, boats, some airplanes) except for a
blue sky preference, but you have a design that would look good in any primary
color. The only change I would make would be to use the small 3 inch "N"
numbers. My thought is that the bill board size numbers take away from the
design. My $0.02 worth, your mileage may vary.

Please don't take this wrong anyone, I know it's risky commenting on another
man's airplane, but I have always thought that dark or primary color
wheelpants at the end of white gear fairings look a little like Miniie

Okay I'll shut up now :-)

Hi Jim, Having just recently been through the sad experience of
watching a test pilot fly my Esqual with a light blue paint area like
your thinking it is very difficult to see from the ground and thus might
be as difficult to see from plane to plane in the air, I got to
thinking, if I was to choose a color for my next plane it would be
chrome yellow in the blue area. Still have a flying Esqual hybrid For

Thanks Buz:
I'm the opposite; have had a lot of blue and green cars.
On the tail numbers, I thought because of the speed of the aircraft, they
needed to be larger, but looking at all of your airplanes, you are using the
3" numbers. I suppose I could run the number up the front end of the
vertical stab in the white area.

Landings this weekend, but unfortunately for me he is on vacation. With that being

Jim, I have chosen a similar paint scheme for my Lightning. I 'borrowed'
mine from a Lancair that I thought was very attractive. I am planning to
paint mine red, so if you are taking votes, I suggest blue for yours.
Just Kiddin'. Paint schemes and colors are a very personal choice, and
one of the ways we can express our individuality when building a kit. I
think either color you have picked will make a great looking airplane.
I am not using builder's assist, so you will likely be in the air before
me. Good luck on your project.

For experimental amateur built aircraft the 3 inch numbers are fine - no
restriction of speed or anything. The only time you would need 12 inch numbers
would be if you took it across international borders. Many homebuilt
aircraft that go out of the country just put on temporary stick on numbers for
that
specific trip.

Does that include flying in to Canada? That would be a frequent trip for
me. I had the larger numbers on my Murphy Rebel which made that trip a few
times before I sold it. I guess I never questioned the numbers as everyone
else was using them.

Thanks Rick. You will love the aircraft for sure. I was back and forth
several times about the Lightning because of my size, (6'-3"), but that
turned out to be a non factor. When you get a flight with Ryan, you will
fall in love with it.
Two things to consider during a demo in his plane.
1. His is a little noisier than a regular Lightning configuration as he is
flying with straight pipes.
2. His is also a bit smaller than the current kit.
They are great folks to deal with. Are you possibly going to use the
builder assist?

This is from the EAA and should help with the N number requirement.
What size does my N number have to be?
Your N Number must be at least 3 inches high when the maximum cruising
speed of the aircraft does not exceed 180 knots CAS. If the maximum
cruising speed is over 180 knots CAS, then the size of the registration
number must be 12 inches high.
Note: If you plan on traveling internationally, through ADIZ or DEWIZ,
registration numbers must be 12 inches high, and can be fixed
temporarily, or permanently.

Help yourself. Talk to Shawn at aircraftpaintschemes.com.
Hi email address is info@aircraftpaintschemes.com
He is good at coming up with some nice variations of different designs as
well.
If you want to fool around with a line drawing of the Lightning, they have
one available on their web site, www.aircraftpainschemes.com

Personally, I have always loved this paint scheme:
http://www.aafo.com/hangartalk/showthread.php?t=4939
I know the person that came up with the scheme, but don't know how to get in
touch. I do know that Kevin can get in touch with him though. You can
email Kevin at kevin@sloair.com Also check out his site:
http://www.sloair.com/index.php Check out the gallery. His interior is
something that could be very similar to what you could put in a Lightning.
Also, just for the heck of it, check out the 12-cylinder diesel powered
radically modified NXT. It was built for racing, rumored to be strung out
to 1000hp, basically they cut out the center of an NXT and made it a single
seater. It wouldn't be good for anything but racing, but the engine is very
impressive and can run on bio diesel or Jet A!

Awesome paint scheme! You know, I wanted to do something with more dark on
the top, but have heard from a few people that the best color for a
composite in the sun is light because the darker colors draw more heat which
promotes softening of the glass?
Is this true?
Jim!

You have to work on that one...
Tell her how educational the process is and how much fun she will have doing
this with you.
That is what my wife said to me...
For the retaining wall, the garden building, the extended driveway, walkway,
picnic area, fire pit.... You get the idea.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jim. I am far from deciding on the builder assist
program, as I don't have buy-in from the spousal-unit, yet.
