Jim,
One thing that I had thought about doing when I was still living in
Shelbyville was to make a scale model lightning. I have a copy of the wing
planform, but Nick probably has a better one. I think that a scratch built
Lightning R/C model would be a lot of fun to make and fly and thought that
it'd make a great addition at Sun-n-Fun or Oshkosh to put beside a real
plane! Just a thought for you R/Cers out there. Brian W.

There is a company called Experimental Aircraft Models,
http://www.rchomebuilts.com
They do this sort of thing and sell it to the RC community.
Some of their kits are composite and quite realistic!
I just sent them and email to see if they have any interest.
Great idea...
Jim!

I believe a pusher configuration would be best considering the thrust line and
resulting moment with the ballons on top.......of course i am not sure if accepted
aerodynamic theroy applies here!

Laurie,
Based on your comment above and Nick's suggestion for a pusher
configuration lawn chair, I have come up with the following design. First, Nick's
pusher lawn chair is hung under the balloons with rigid attachments, and then
the balloons are encased in a light weight frame and net affair that forces the
balloons into the shape of a blimp. An elevator and rudder behind the
pusher prop would also be used. That should work, but I am not too sure how you
determine gross weight of an "airship" that has neutral buoyancy. Also, how
about stall speed, demonstrated cross wind capability, etc., etc. Inquiring
minds want to know. Thoughts?

Yes, I think this is beyond textbook aerodynamics here. Wonder if they have
a world record for (lighter than air?) chairs and ballons longest flight?
I have done a lot of research on early Navy rigid airships. I am
particularly interested in writing a book on the disaster of the Shenandoah.
They never landed crosswind, they come in to a mooring mast that had a
pivot head on it. That way it swung around like a wind sock. Or in the
case of the Shenandoah, gets ripped off the mast in a major storm and limps
around the sky. Pretty cool though. Plans for a 1,000' lighter than air
aircraft carrier was planned when the program cancelled. I've got an artist
pic of corsairs flying off the thing. Very interesting. Brian W.

The kit is in and I'm off to Green Landings for 5 days to start on my
Lightning.
I have to say that I am very excited and in spite of some delays in getting
the kit to WV, it all worked out and we are ready to rock and roll!
I will be taking a bunch of pictures and documenting everything that I am
doing. I am also prepping for an article that may go in either Sport
Aviation or Sport Pilot. In speaking with Mary at EAA today, we are going
to hold off and see what the focus of the article is going to be. I want to
do something along the line of the builder's experience in the builder's
assist program with some focus on the Lightning. This would allow me to put
the article in Sport Pilot because even though I am not going light sport, I
can talk about the Lightning and how is can be build as a light sport or
straight experimental aircraft.
I have a web site with nothing in it at this time, www.jimslightning.com
I will be updating it as I go.
Unless Ryan has wireless at Green Landings, I will not have internet access,
so I'll just say adios and will check back in next week.
Jim!

Good luck Jim - I can understand your excitement!
A lot has been written on this forum about the Lightning's flying
qualities,
but relatively little about the build process. I am looking forward to
your
reports very much.

Flying over Mountains
Here is a link for a photograph of the nut in the lawn
chair high above some majestic, snow-capped mountains.
Enjoy!
