    Nick & Mark, I tried the lower pressure gas struts and the problem is the same. I guess that I will try another means of supporting the canopy for I dont want to give up the nice fit I have now. Will be open to any suggestions. Tex

    Subject: build manual & flight manual
    Tex, You can always do like the Esquals, and like some of the Lightnings when they first begin flying and just not put in any struts. You'll just have to hold your own canopy up. Buz has a mod for his Esqual that holds up the canopy a few inches to help with airflow on the ground. You could put something like a nylon or leather strap mounted to the inside rear of the canopy, then when you close it pull it through the opening between the canopy and turtledeck so that it's easy to lift up the canopy. I mean, even with the struts you have to be careful so that the wind doesn't catch it and slam it back down or stress it and pull it off the other way. I flew a couple of Lightnings like this and all the Esquals that I flew were like this and it's not that big of a deal. The struts were just something that the Lightning folks were trying to make as a convienince in ther design. Brian W.     Hi All, Another way to hold the canopy open partially is to drill new holes about 3 to 4 inches above the fuselage holes located for the existing canopy lock pins. Then raise the canopy and slide these pins out and into the fuselage frame and the canopy is locked into position and air can flow through the cockpit without restriction. This is a simple mod that does not add weight and is easy to do at any time during or after the build phase. I've seen this mod done on a lightning here in Tucson.     Tex, As Bill said, there are a few people who have drilled a second canopy pin latch hole in the railing a few inches above the original holes. That locks the canopy in a slightly inclined position while taxiing for airflow. I think that it comes down to an option of accessability. If you've got a really great fit and don't mind tilting the canopy up and watching it to make sure it doesn't fall back everytime then I'd just leave the shocks off. Saves a little weight, less to break in the future etc. Doesn't really change the looks any. Brian W.     Hi Tex, This is Pete Disher, If I understand your canopy problem correctly I believe the hindge springs open when the gas struts are on.
