ddunbar- to my knowledge, there is only one guy
putting an eight cylinder in the Lightning, and he is

Hi Charles,
As always, you have proposed a very thought provoking and complex
question - or actually, questions. Taking them one at a time:
-If after a 1000 or so hours in a Lightning, could one white boy with a
hundred or so extra hours
in a tail wheel like a Sonerai,and a very confident and well-skilled pilot
with nerves of steel and
cat-like reflexes, move up to the Nemesis NXT?
Personally, I don't think a really big number of hours of total flying
time is all that important. I have seen 20,000+ hour pilots that I would not
feel comfortable to let fly my airplane. Sure, they must be good at systems
management while letting the auto pilot do the work, but their real stick and
rudder skills were sorely lacking. They probably don't really enjoy general
aviation or sport aircraft and thus take no pride in flying one really well.
On the other hand, I have seen very low time pilots that were on top of
their flying game and I would have no problem letting them fly one of my
airplanes. The more important factor in my mind would be currency in the type
of
airplane you are going to fly. Also, when checking out in a new airplane,
having a wide variety of background experience in numerous airplanes is always
a
benefit as well. So to check out in a Nemesis NXT, get some dual in one if
that is even a possibility. If not, find a tail dragger that lands at about
the same speed and has the same amount of visibility in the landing
configuration. And don't forget, as Curtis Pitts once said, "There is no such
thing as
a squirrely airplane. Just squirrely pilots."
-I would love to see Nick and crew come up with a design for a plane that
could push the 300 mph mark yet cost half of what a finished Nemesis would cost.
I have no idea what a Nemesis would cost (big bucks right??) but a
totally new Lightning to match Nemesis performance would be big bucks as well.
It
takes money to go fast. You just can't hang a huge engine on the Lightning
and get it anywhere near 300. Why? To start with, the current airfoil
would probably hit a brick wall on the drag curve at something around 225 or so
(ask Nick). And just how much power would it take to get the current
Lightning to 225 in level flight? Well, an IO-550 (300 HP) might come close,
but the
current Lightning fuselage would need major modifications to mount and
handle that much HP. And then you would need much larger fuel tanks, etc, etc.
Thus the gross weight goes way up, requiring a larger wing, etc, etc. Heck, I
guess we will just need to start with a clean sheet of paper to design the
airplane you are looking for. That would be easier and probably cheaper.
Once you get it designed and flying, then maybe others will want one as well,
but then do that many people have the money, the desire, and the capability to
buy, build and fly such a design. Don't know, but it is fun to think about.

Well, if I were current and proficient in the Nemesis, and if it has
that kind of range plus reserve, and if it can carry the right survival gear,
and if the weather was right, and if my destination has the right runway
environment, then yes. It normally takes me about 10 hours (sometimes more)
to
feel confident in a new (to me) airplane, but by feeling confident, I don't
just mean flying it straight and level and then landing on a long runway (that
would probably only take an hour or less). I like to be feel confident in all
flight regimes of an airplane's envelop. And of course that envelop varies
greatly from airplane to airplane. In some cases that would include
aerobatics, in others it might mean slow flight and maneuvering at high angles
of
attack, in others in might include landing on back country airports or perhaps
on no runways at all. So it all depends. But to feel confident, I want to
be able to fly the airplane to it's max design capabilities and then land on
any runway that meets it's minimum design specifications, and in any wind
condition that I am likely to encounter. The rest of your 1000 mile Nemesis
question really has to do with that airplane itself and I just don't know that
much about it. But one thing for sure, it is one beautiful airplane.

that I probably could have bought the place by now. But it is the closest
to
the airport. Initially the "great rate" was based on my military ID, but I
think if you say you are there as part of the Arion Lightning or Jabiru USA
Sport Aircraft program, you will be given a special rate.
