Hello All You Zappers (Lightnings),
Kit #49 arrived at Ryan Field (KRYN), which is west of Tucson, about 3:35pm on
Friday 21, September! We unloaded the various parts and placed the wings and
flaps on stands and the fuselage on a blanket on the hangar floor. Seth was the
driver of the delivery truck which was pulling the longest 3 axle trailer I've
ever seen. I believe Pace is the builder of these trailers. They make them
to haul NASCAR vehicles primarily. The wings were padded and hung on the walls.
All of the other fiberglass parts were packed inside the fuselage and the
canopy was taped to the fuselage.
Some observations:
1. The driver is the only one delivering the kit and it takes a minimum of three
people to get the fuselage out of the trailer. I had to go ask someone to help
with this. We probably would have managed with two but, we would have had
to remove all of the items stored in the fuselage to do it and it still would
have been a very awkward task at best.
2. There is no inventory document that comes with the kit! Consequently, you
don't really know what you should be getting and what has possibly been left out.
3. There was no canopy frame shipped with the kit. Greg Hobbs, my dealer, said
it usually ships with the canopy and rests under it when it is shipped. He
did not know why it did not come with this kit as it has come with all of the
others he has gotten.
4. I checked over the canopy and found that there was some rubbed/scraped area
on the inside of the canopy starting toward the front right side and extending
back several inches. I made note of this on my shipping bill of lading. I
can't tell if the canopy is scratched or not because of the protective coating
that covers the entire unit which has been removed in this location.
5. All of the other metal parts and such have not been received as yet. So...
I am going to start on drilling some holes and doing some preliminary prep work.
I also will be building a work table and a fuselage dolly for holding and
moving it around the hangar. Hopefully the other parts will start to arrive
soon.
As soon as I can, I will send some pictures of the kit and the various parts that
have arrived so far. I'm not sure of the protocol for uploading pictures to
the list but, will research it when I find the time. I do have a shipment of
bolts, nuts, washers and other hardware that was sent previously from Aircraft
Spruce.

Mark?? The best nuts plates that we like using are the bigger size.? They were
backordered for our kit
The K1000-08? would replace the Mk 1000? The K-1000 are also cheaper.? .37 not
.52?They seem to work better with our? rivet guns.? Do you think that you could
reorder the K's for us and if possible for the rest of the kits I order??????

Actually, just about all of the 18 or so in attendance witnessed the first
flight.
Jim was a very proud "papa".
Tomorrow 5 Lightnings and 1 Esqual LS are taxing down to the monthly
Shelbyville fly in breakfast. Hopefully we'll outnumber the RV's tomorrow!!
We would have had 6 Lightnings but Earl was unable to fly up due to weather
in Atlanta. He was able to drive up though.
Pictures to follow.

Today Nick took off in Jim Goad's Lightning for it's first flight. The half
hour flight was routine and Nick reported it flies hands off and other than
a minor bungee adjustment to get more up trim the aircraft is great!
Congrats to Jim who built the Lightning in Arion Aircraft's builder assist
program.
More details to follow after more flight testing.

The fly-in weather could not have been better in Shelbyville. There was a gathering
of good folks from all over. West Virginia, New York, Florida, Georgia
and Tennessee were represented. Friday was highlighted by Jim Goad's plane's
first flight, and the Brats, hamburgers, beans, cornbread and fixins. Thanks
to Pete, Dana and Barbara and the rest of the KSYI lightning crowd for all that.

Thanks to Pete and Nick for the good food and good company Friday. I got my first
ride in the Lightning (I tried to wipe up the excess drool) after the flight.
I want one, bad, but have to figure a way to convince "she who must be obeyed".
Sorry I didn't get to come Saturday.
Impressions:
Beautiful, great lines.
Very quiet compared to Diamonds, RV, and Kitfox.
Very smooth running.
Good air flow in the cockpit.
Plenty of Room for my 5'10", 210 lbs.
Flys very straight forward, quite responsive, no surprises. I was a little heavy
on the rudder, but a couple of hours will fix that. Slightly heavier in the
roll axis than than the other two axis. It would roll quite handily, if it
were legal to do so.
Faster and cheap to operate.
Didn't get to land it, but Nick did good under my direct supervision ha-ha-ha (may
have something to do with experience).
IMHO it will be very hard, if not impossible, to find as good a plane for the money.

It was a pleasure meeting everyone in Shellbyville this past week, Paul and
I had a great time with everyone and enjoyed the camaraderie of the whole
gang. Enjoyed the beers, burgers and brats too. What a great bunch of pilots and
team at Lightning. I know we will see some of you at the fly ins around the
country.
Buz, thanks for the demo ride.

Airline tickets Tulsa to Nashville return: $257
Hotels 1 night in Nashville and 2 in Shelbyville: $270
Rental car: $70
Dinner at the Bell Buckle Caf: Priceless! J Thanks Pete!
What a great weekend! Both from a social and prospective buyers viewpoint,
it could not have been better.
The opportunity to see 5 flying Lightnings and 2 more at different stages of
construction, plus various parts and pieces, as well as 2 Esquals to
illustrate the differences, was also priceless!
Add to this the patient, expert and detailed answers to endless questions,
provided by Nick, Mark, Mike and Pete, from the manufacturers viewpoint,
then the generous sharing of observations, tips and encouragement from
builders and flyers at different stages of their journey. And of course the
demo rides with PIC Buzz. I think I got the first and possibly longest
flight early on Friday morning. It was everything I hoped!
Over the course of two days, I think I managed to interrogate everyone
present who was either a builder (current or past), an employee, or married
to an employee!
I got to talk through every major operation in the construction process and
developed confidence that I could do this at home with moderate use of the
telephone and heavy use of the Yahoo group. (How did anyone build airplane
kits before the Internet?)
I think everyone realized that I dont want to do any more fiberglass work
than necessary, but I think I am okay with most of what little there is. I
will seek out someone with experience at EAA chapter 10. If the h.
stabilizer and elevator molds were updated by the time I take delivery of my
kit, so that fiberglass work on those could be avoided, that would really be
icing on the cake!
The pre-formed side windows look like they will save significant effort and
give an even better result.
I like the newly available steps and canopy hoop. The 30 gallon fuel option
is great and I hope the extended wingtips work out.
Finally, to all those who have completed their builds, congratulations! It
may be called amateur built, but the finish, fit and quality of the work
certainly does not suggest this. I have never seen a finer flight of
experimentals and builders! Thanks to you all for a great weekend!
Colin K.

Several folks have already written about the Lightning fly-in and others
will probably do the same. My thoughts are just as have been already stated -
it was an outstanding weekend. Good weather, great comradery, outstanding
hospitality by the SYI group, fun hangar talk and information sharing, plus it
was good to be able to put a face to the names on the list. I enjoyed Earl's
talk about his world record flight, but I do hope he got home without being
arrested by the "fashion" police. Pete and Nick's recount of how the
Lightning came to be was certainly interesting and shows what can be accomplished
by
dedicated, talented people, and I am sure everyone enjoyed what they have
planned for the future. As to the presentation on test flying experimental
aircraft by that bald headed guy, let me know if you have any suggestions as it
is scheduled to be given to other aviation groups in the near future.
The weekend highlight for me was flying with many of you in the Lightning
Demonstrator. I flew a total of 15 demo rides and Nick flew some as well, so
hopefully everyone that wanted a flight got one. I even put seven more hours
on the prototype while I was here in SYI. Unfortunately, I have to fly back
to Virginia tomorrow, but I look forward to putting more time on it in the
future. The next mod scheduled to be tested on the prototype will be the new
wing tip extensions. Nick will start testing them sometime soon, with the
goal of having their design finalized by the Sebring show.
Of course the event was made even that more special when Nick made the first
flight on Jim Goad's beautiful airplane. (You may not have heard, but he
even has a parking brake in it.) I just happened to be in the air on a demo
ride and was able to join up to provide airspeed calls in the pattern since he
lost that "somewhat needed information source" during the flight. Overall
"piece of cake" for the "golden hands" Nick. The next to fly will likely be
Dick Clevengar's "Rocky Mountain Special" as it is being inspected this week.
Congratulations to Tom, Al, and Dan are in order since this Wisconsin
Lightning flew early this morning.
Final thought - I predict that the Lightning team is going to get busier and
busier. With a beautiful airplane that looks like it is going Mach II just
sitting on the ramp and all the other outstanding things that have been
written about it, Mark, Mike and Nick are certainly going to be kept busy. Mark,
Shelbyville's most "eligible elder" bachelor (Ben is the youngest), will
probably have to start bringing his many different dates to work with him or
otherwise do without. Keep up the good work, Mark. Maybe next time we really
can have a Tennessee Walking Horse breeding demonstration.
Blue Skies,
Buz
PS: Mike, how was the ''Moostang" show?

I don't have to tell the people who were there how great a weekend it was.
But if you weren't able to attend, we missed you, and you missed a singular
experience. However, we will probably give you another chance. We're already
starting to talk about next year.
With 18 flying and another 30+ in the works, we will soon have a sizable
group. Maybe it's a bit early to be organizing a type club, but it isn't too
soon to be thinking about it. Here are my thoughts to kick things off.
First point. Include Lightnings and Esquals. Not only is there a
resemblance, but the Esquals were a part of the Shelbyville/Arion community.
Besides,
we need Buz in the group. Juan too if he keeps his Esqual.
Arion was extremely generous in hosting the first gathering, but by next
year the group will be much larger. We will need to take some of the
responsibility, and expense, off their shoulders.
We are geographically a pretty diverse group. Green Landings came down for
this assemblage, and it would be nice to visit their location. Gregg and
Crystal Hobbs in Arizona are worth a visit too. I had that privilege last month.
We will probably divide up into regions eventually. Are there other dealer
locations?
Anybody passing through Atlanta, please let me know.
That's my thoughts for now.

Thanks Earl for all you have done. I would vote for a fly-in at the Green
Landings location next year and then perhaps move it around the country at
each of the rep's regions? Of course if we do that, we will lose the magic
of visiting the "home base" at SYI!
Either way, I will be flying mine next year, so I'm sorry I missed it in
2007, but am looking forward to 2008.
