We also enjoyed the gathering; it was great to see the Lightning team
again and the owner/builders we had met before. It was a treat to meet
some of the folks whose names we had seen online and those future
builders who are about to embark on a terrific experience. Pete, Nick,
and Mark outdid themselves on the weather and the hospitality. We were
sorry John Davis, Rick Bowen, and Joe Cooper didn't make it; we were
hoping to see their beautiful birds again. We were also witnesses to
the historic event for Jim Goad; he upholds the principle that Lightning
builders are a special bunch. The next Lightning to fly - Dick
Cleavenger's - is another beauty soon to leave the nest!
We made it home Sunday evening about 30 minutes after official sunset;
we departed SYI about 10AM but about an hour later I smelled something
burning. We landed at Morristown, TN 30 minutes later with the voltage
having dropped significantly. Luckily Pete was still at the airport so
by telephone he told us what the likely culprit was - the yellow wire
coming out of the voltage regulator had shorted and burned. With the
cowling removed, we discovered he was absolutely right. Of course on a
Sunday there was no mechanic at the field but two RV builders showed up
and came to our rescue. They had the connectors and tools to trim and
reconnect the wires. Then, of course, we had to wait for the battery
to be recharged enough to start the engine. Borrowing the airport
courtesy car gave us the opportunity to get lunch while the battery was
recharging. After about 3 1/2 hours at the Morristown Airport we were
able to resume our trip home. A big thanks to the folks at Morristown;
they were the usual friendly GA airport with homebuilders present. We
would have been out of luck at a big city airport.
Again thanks to the Arion team; the first homecoming was a great
weekend. Nick flew our plane for the first time and was able to
diagnose some needed adjustments; then he, Mark, and Mike helped do some
of them on the spot. It was especially nice not to hear "Betty" saying
"Low Fuel" constantly on the trip home. We are already looking forward
to the second annual homecoming; we'll be there!
Linda and Joe Mathias

The 2nd is of Relentless, in cockpit cam, turning the pylons during

Robin and I had a great time visiting with everyone. I wish we could have s
tayed longer than just Saturday afternoon, but it was well worth the trip.
It was good to hear Pete tell the history of the Lightning and then hear fr
om Nick about all the new goodies on the way. My flight with Buz was a blas
t! I'll be working overtime to save up the money for a kit.=0A=0AIf you guy
s want to fly down to LZU for a pancake breakfast, EAA 690 puts on a nice s
pread first Saturday of each month. There's usually about 50 people at the
breakfast and we usually have a speaker. Check www.eaa690.org for details.
=0A=0AThanks to all the folks at SYI for putting on such a nice event.=0A

Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Homecoming
Several folks have already written about the Lightning fly-in and others will probably
do the same.? My thoughts are just as have been already stated - it was
an outstanding weekend.? Good weather, great comradery, outstanding hospitality
by the SYI group, fun hangar talk and information sharing, plus it was good
to be able to put a face to the names on the list.? I enjoyed Earl's talk about
his world record flight, but I do hope he got home without being arrested
by the "fashion" police.? Pete and Nick's recount of how the Lightning came to
be was certainly interesting and shows what can be accomplished by dedicated,
talented people, and I am sure everyone enjoyed what they have planned for the
future.? As to the presentation on test flying experimental aircraft by that
bald headed guy, let me know if you have any suggestions as it is scheduled to
be given to other aviation groups in the near future.?
?
The weekend highlight for me was flying with many of you in the Lightning Demonstrator.?
I flew a total of 15 demo rides and Nick flew some as well, so hopefully
everyone that wanted a flight got one.? I even put seven more hours on the
prototype while I was here in SYI.? Unfortunately, I have to fly back to Virginia
tomorrow, but I look forward to putting more time on it in the future.?
The next mod scheduled to be tested on the prototype will be the new wing tip
extensions.? Nick will start testing them sometime soon, with the goal of having
their design finalized by the Sebring show.?
?
Of course the event was made even that more special when Nick made the first flight
on Jim Goad's beautiful airplane.? (You may not have heard, but he even has
a parking brake in it.)? I just happened to be in the air on a demo ride and
was able to join up to provide airspeed?calls in the pattern since he lost that
"somewhat needed information source" during the flight.? Overall "piece of
cake" for the "golden hands" Nick.? The next to fly will likely be Dick Clevengar's
"Rocky Mountain?Special" as it is being inspected this week.? Congratulations
to Tom,?Al, and Dan?are in order since this Wisconsin?Lightning?flew early
this morning.??
?
Final thought - I predict that the Lightning team is going to get busier and busier.?
With a beautiful airplane that looks like it is going Mach II just sitting
on the ramp and all the other outstanding things that have been written about
it, Mark,?Mike and Nick are certainly going to be kept busy.? Mark, Shelbyville's
most "eligible elder" bachelor (Ben is the youngest), will probably have
to start bringing his many different dates to work with him or otherwise do
without.? Keep up the good work, Mark.? Maybe next time we really can have a
Tennessee Walking Horse breeding demonstration.?
?
Blue Skies,
Buz
PS:? Mike, how was the ''Moostang" show??
