Subject: | Lightning Weight and Balance |
In the past there have been requests for weight and balance data for the Li
ghtning. Keep in mind that this is anexperimental and therefore your aircr
aft will depend on what you put into it. I typed up a weight and balance f
rom thedemonstrator. I know that this will get out of order when I put it
in an email, but if you want the info it shouldn't be too hard tofigure out
how to get it spaced back out right. It should give you an idea of how mu
ch you can carry and where you can carry itBrian W.Aircraft Type:

Bill,
In another thread you were talking about the control stops. All control
s are "stopped" by their butting up against the wing, tail, whatever. This
is fairly typical of light aircraft, particularly of light sport aircraft.
It is an easy and safe system and minimizes weight. One thing that I don
't think that I mentioned before was that when I did my gap seal experiment
on the Lightning, we put a 1 inch line of mylar tape along these "touch po
ints". You can probably find 1/2 inch long mylar tape as well. You most l
ikely will use white like we did, but you can get clear. (problem with cle
ar is that it yellows with age) For the most part you never would have see
n this tape, but it will protect the paint from skuffing. In my case I was
using it for a rub strip against the mylar gap seals. I believe that we s
tumbled upon this additional use for it though and think that Nick left it
on the demonstrator even after we removed the test section of gap seals.
The benefits of the gap seals were clear. they work. To simplify things,
my recommendation on that front would be to extend the lip of the trailing
edge of the wing back further in future kits by changing the molds. I don'
t know how easy that would be to do, but that way there's no maintenance of
the seals, no need to spend time for installation, and no danger if one of
them came loose. A partial gap cover would be the way to go. Brian W.

Try this one for comparison. I have a friend that uses one of these.
Expensive but they do work.

Bill,
Reference the smoke system, I was going to recommend you call the IAC
offices at EAA because I often see smoke systems advertised in the monthly
magazine, Sport Aerobatics. However the link that Larry sent you looks good to
me. It certainly beats what we had to go through years ago when we put smoke
systems in our aerobatic aircraft. We had to find every part from various
sources, then experiment to get them to work right together. Such questions as
nozzle sizes, nozzle placement, electric pump pressure, hose sizes, etc.
took lots of experimenting. The system that Larry mentioned includes everything
you should need.
Having said all the above, I just have to ask why? Sure, it is your
airplane, and it should be exactly what you want, but what will you use it for?
We could not use them in competition (only airshows), and you really had to
clean off the belly after every use. I assume they still use Texaco Corvis
oil for the smoke and inject it into both exhaust pipes (a certain distance
from the exhaust end). This distance was kind of critical to get a good smoke
density and not just oil spray that would really make a mess. Anyway, have
fun and let us know what the Tuscon authorities say when they meet you at the
airport to find out what kind of terrorist act you were committing by
gassing the locals on the ground. Just kidding of course, but I seem to remember
that actually happened a number of years ago when an aerobatic guy let off
some smoke over a little league game.

Buz

Hi Larry,
Thanks for your reply. I've looked at this product and am pursuing
others because of size and overall cost..............Bill.

Buz,
Thanks for the input about smoke systems.
I want to install one primarily because of safety concerns. The side
and head/tail views of this aircraft are exceptionally small and I fly
out of a very busy airport with lots of student training and in an area
that forces aircraft into a relatively small transition area. We are
bounded by mountains to the North and East and military and civilian
airports to the south and southwest with high hills to the West. Also,
I just think it's really cool and I don't see other aircraft as well as
when I was flying fighters! Consequently, "smoke on" may help them to
see me..........Bill.

Bill,
Which airport? And what's the old name for Ryan field? That is where I
was teaching a friend slow rolls in his Starduster and the cowling came off.
The right side caught on the flying wires and I really had a hand full of
yaw / drag, but got it down OK. I think he is still "wetting" his pants.
:-)
Having been stationed in Arizona twice for a total of about nine years I
am very familiar with the area. First time was six years at Luke
instructing in the F-4 and then on the initial F-15 ISD Team. I was just back
from two
combat tours so could stay in one place for a while. Built my Pitts while
there. Second time I was the Base Commander at the Gila Bend gunnery ranges
(now Barry Goldwater Ranges). Got an OK from the pentagon to keep my Bonanza
at the base and used it to fly to and from Luke for meetings with the Air
Division. Also used it to ferry VIPs over the 2.7 million acres of the ranges
so they could see first hand what the Air Force was doing there. I kept the
Pitts at Goodyear, but occasionally brought it to the base. Believe it or
not, I really enjoyed the assignment and it got me promoted to O-6. Left the
re to go back into the F-4 as the DCO at George. From there went to Langley
at the Deputy Inspector General for Air Combat Command. Boy time flies when
you are having fun.
Blue Skies,
Buz
