What happens after you see a bolt of Lightning? You get a thunder c lap. Right? Well, everyone on the list has by now seen a Lightning so it is about time to get a thunder clap in the form of a newsletter. Yes, with the help of Nick and the others at Arion Aircraft, I am about to start a L ightning Newsletter that hopefully will go out monthly. You will initially receive it via this list, but it should also be published and archived on the Arion web site. I don't think the Matronics list will allow files larg e enough to include photos in our newsletter, but if we get that fancy and we actually have photos, those would be included in the Lightning Newslette r section of the Arion web site. Aren't you excited? No, I don't mean it that way Earl. For all of you out there, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to give me some suggestions on what we should call the Lightning Newsle tter and what type of information you would like to see covered. As to the name, I really don't think "THE CLAP" would be all that appropriate unless CLAP stands for Cool Lightning Air Plane. So send me your ideas for a nam e for our newsletter. Right now the obvious topics to be covered in each issue will be news f rom the factory, news from dealers, news from builders and owners, upcoming events, new first flights, and maybe a technical tips section. The dealer s will have a section so they can send in their news and this will also all ow prospective customers to know who to contact in their areas. Buz: I posted an old newsletter from our RC club as a test. It has a fair amount of graphics in it, but is in .PDF format. We'll see if the list lets it go through. This may for the group if we use this format. Jim!.

Jim, It works, the PDF opened fine. Buz is right though 500+ kb is a lot of a load for the mail server to try to forward to all these people and it'd b e quick and nice to have it on the Arion site once things really get going. I'd be happy though if we could get a monthly publication similar to the quality of the one that you sent. Having seen Buz's thorough nature of him building Bravo Zulu and then helping everybody after him by making a basis for a manual I am confident it'll be a good publication. As long as peopl e contribute we'll get some good reads! Brian W. Buz, I'm delighted you are willing to do this. Great idea. That said, I'm not sure "The Clap" has just the right connotation. How about "The Thunderclap"? What about an e-mail distribution list in addition to posting on the Arion web site? BTW, I don't think i have ever heard thunder in an airplane. Now that should start a discussion for sure.:<) And Buz, what did you think I would be getting excited about. At age 71 my options are more limited than I would like. To group, I believe there has been some misinterpretation of new products coming from Arion Aircraft. We do not have a longer wing and have no design for one. We have designed a wing tip extenision for the current wing plan form that will increase the wings area and with a slight up swept tip improve its efficiency. We do not have any longer ailerons as of now. With the current wings aileron effectivness we may not extend the ailerons at all , if the feel is to heavy but still effective we will simply re gear them, and only if needed extend the ailerons for the new tips. Just wanted to clear this up a bit..... Nick Otterback Arion Aircraft ---------------------------------

In a message dated 2/8/2008 2:35:39 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, dashvii@hotmail.com writes: What are you still doing up? Hi Brian, Yea, I am keeping some late hours recently, but it is because I am trying to get caught up on even another project I am working on. I needed to get out a report to a group of aviation folks that are helping me plan a practice session for Region 10 of NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association). At the last regional contest I was once again the Chief Landings Judge and I noticed that the contestants just didn't do as good a job on the power on and power off landings as they had in the past. Talking with the team coaches and advisors they said the kids just had not practiced as much as in the past due to increased cost of aircraft rental and fuel. Long story short, I got the local EAA chapters and the 99s to donate enough money to host a practice session for the region 10 teams that will be going to the National Contest this May. If you happen to be back in Tennessee, come watch the kids, as the Nationals will be in Smyrna, TN, early in May. Thanks for your "name the newsletter" suggestions. I will keep a tally and then we can take a vote, forward the reader's results to Nick and the SYI gang, and let them chose the winning name. What will you win? I have no idea, but at least you name will be a part of Lightning history for many years to come. Isn't that exciting? No, not that way Earl. Remember, Earl, I tried to talk you and Linda into doing this last September at the Lightning fly in. Since you didn't volunteer you are now stuck with me - at least until you relent and become the "second" Lightning Newsletter Editor. Hint, hint. And yes, the idea is to distribute the newsletter via the Matronics Lightning list, but to also put it on the Arion web site so those not on the list might find it there. The web site would also allow past issues to also be available for those doing "research" on the world's best newsletters. And yes, I have heard thunder in the cockpit while flying my Cub. It was one of those situations where you wished you were not hearing thunder as the airplane was too slow to outrun the rapidly developing storm. Jim, Your RC Club newsletter looks great - much higher quality in terms of graphics than I had in mind, but it will give us a goal to aim for. My initial goal will be to get the accurate "news" out in a timely manner and then start to incorporate photos as I can. Is there a particular soft ware program that you would recommend? I only have adobe reader at the moment, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not anywhere near what you would call a computer whiz - in fact my computer screen has white out all over it. You know me, to a guy with a beer in one hand and a big hammer in the other hand, everything looks like a nail. So - HELP. Buz **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Buzz, love your idea, and the name is sort of neat. I know I would be very happy to send in topics if I could attach pictures, for I don't don't have the vocabulary to put an Idea across. Nick, I knew that it was a wingtip extension, but didn't know about the aileron. I guess when I moved away we were still discussing the possibility of a lo nger aileron, but if you don't think it'll need it, no reason to go to the trouble. Do you have any early pics of this mod yet? Also, how does the n ew canopy latch mechanism work. I know that you said that you can open it from outside, but can't really tell much from the pictures on the site. I' m still going to meet with Buz's friend down here and see if I can get him interested in the Lightning, but he's busy with astronauts and cosmonauts r ight now. Have a good one Arion crew. Photos cam through fine thanks Brian. I can start wall-papering my office wall now! In regards the newsletter - I'm hanging out for photos/videos of finished Lightnings being used - for local fun or for cross-country touring. Perhaps some in-flight video shot from the cockpit while over something worth seeing. My build will probably take 12 months after the kit arrives in Australia - so such photos/videos of completed aircraft doing their thing would really help me through the build! All, Well, now that I have your attention with that subject line, let me explain. What happens after you see a bolt of Lightning? You get a thunder clap. Right? Well, everyone on the list has by now seen a Lightning so it is about time to get a thunder clap in the form of a newsletter. Yes, with the help of Nick and the others at Arion Aircraft, I am about to start a Lightning Newsletter that hopefully will go out monthly. You will initially receive it via this list, but it should also be published and archived on the Arion web site. I don't think the Matronics list will allow files large enough to include photos in our newsletter, but if we get that fancy and we actually have photos, those would be included in the Lightning Newsletter section of the Arion web site. Aren't you excited? No, I don't mean it that way Earl. For all of you out there, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to give me some suggestions on what we should call the Lightning Newsletter and what type of information you would like to see covered. As to the name, I really don't think "THE CLAP" would be all that appropriate unless CLAP stands for Cool Lightning Air Plane. So send me your ideas for a name for our newsletter. Right now the obvious topics to be covered in each issue will be news from the factory, news from dealers, news from builders and owners, upcoming events, new first flights, and maybe a technical tips section. The dealers will have a section so they can send in their news and this will also allow prospective customers to know who to contact in their areas. So help me get the ball rolling and together we can make this a good newsletter. Blue Skies, Buz ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Who's never won? I think that this is a wonderful idea and potentially a great benefit of information to all prospective buliders, builders and owners. I salute Buz for the initiative. I do not have a clever suggestion, but an observation that others can perhaps build upon. It is at least psossible that rather than develop continually evolving versions of the Lightning to create a dynasty like the Porsche 911, in the long run, Arion may produce two or more airplane models different enough to not share the Lightning name. Were things to develop like this, I would imagine that the publication may be more successful by encompassing all of Arion's airplanes. So, would it show foresight to develop the name based on Arion rather than Lightning? Colin K. Actually Buz, I used Microsoft Publisher because it was so easy to use. I then used Adob e to publish the file. You can put the newsletter together in anything you like and email it to me and I will convert it for you and send it back.. Arion could post it on their site,a nd all you need to do is provide a hyperlink to the file in your message to everyone. Another newsletter name suggestion....How about "AWE/STRUCK" using a little lightning bolt instead of a forward slash mark between the words? And then maybe a little line underneath with something like: "The Arion Aircraft builders/flyers Official newsletter" Am I making any sense with this...? I think it would look kinda' cool, and be different. My 2 cents, and worth what you paid for it! Colin, I think that is an excellent idea. Since Arion is a horse from Greek Mythology, are you suggesting that an appropriate name would be something like "Horse Droppings". Just kidding of course, but I do think you have hit on a great idea / suggestion for incorporating Arion instead of Lightning. Any yes, they just might do a Thunderbolt some day. You know the Arion skunk works is always thinking - well almost always when they have a beer in one hand. Buz **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Can anyone tell me what the datum of the engine CG is, and the datum of the bulkhead at the rear of the baggage compartment? I'd like to move the engine forward enough to compensate for the BRS, without compromising the 50-lb. baggage rating. I believe that the reason that baggage is limited to 10 lbs with the BRS is due to an aft CG condition that could be remedied by moving the engine forward just a bit. At the same time, it would be really nice to put the BRS behind the baggage compartment. Hugh Sontag
