Hey Guys/Gals: I am seriously contemplating building a lightning. I live on
a grass runway in FL, so I am concerned about operations off of grass. Does
anyone else operate consistently off of grass?
I also wonder about CHT's on the Jabiru. I have a 601 HD which seems to
have a cooling problem. I hope I have it fixed, but wonder about the
Lightning?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

On Tuesday of this week I was able to fly an older Lightning (#2). Then
the same afternoon I flue the New Lightning (#22). The older lightning
need help with CHT, however the new lightning ran very cool. Max CHT w
as 295 and I tried to get it hot. I think the heating problem is fixed.

Hi Lynn,
Good to hear from you again. My experience has been that if you have
the inter cylinder baffles and deflectors inside the supplied fiberglass intake
ducts positioned properly there is no problem with CHT on the 3300 Jabiru.
Most of my experience is with the 3300 (several different aircraft) but I
have also flown two airplanes with the 2200 and none of them had CHT problems
once you have things set up as I mentioned above. Our chapter's 601XL
initially had high readings in the summer months, but fine tuning on the deflectors
inside the intake ducts solved that. Another thing to think about is the
newer hydraulic lifter 3300s have a higher CHT range than the older solid lifer
models, so it is not as critical while you are fine tuning the system.
If you build with one of the Lightning dealers or at Shelbyville they
will make sure you get it right. If you build at home, then do yourself a
favor and go to one of the engine seminars where that type of stuff is covered.
The Lightnings (and Esquals) operate great out of grass fields, but I
would not consider them rough field or certainly not bush planes. Remember you
have only 500x5 tires. I have taken mine into all the grass fields in VA
that I used to take my Pitts into with no problem. They certainly land slower
than the Pitts so the ground run is short. Also, the dealer in Green
Landings (gosh I want to say Acres) operates out of a grass field all the time.
One other thought - if your I FLY S MODEL "call sign" refers to a 64 or
65 Bonanza, then you are in for a treat. As nice as the Bonanzas fly, the
Lightning is better on much less than half the fuel burn. Since you live in
Florida, be sure to make Sun-N-Fun and see the new 2008 Demo. You might even
get a ride.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Lynn:
While I don't know the total numbers, I Do know that there are many
Lightnings that operate out of grass fields. Green Landings is a build
center and they have a grass runway. In fact, friends of mine with RVs tell
me that the grass helps to cut down on the gear shimmy on their aircraft, so
I would imagine it would help rather than hurt.
The Lightning is a tought airplane and unless you are flying off of rocky
tundra, I would expect you to be in good shape.

Thanks for the scientific explanation.? I was taking my data from Mork (who was

He measured space travel in Bleams.? I simply took a SWAG at it from there.

Concerning the just announced FAA moratorium on new additions to the 51 percent
approved list, I don't see Arion or the Lightning on the approved list. What
does that mean, if anything to us who are currently in the process of building?

Hi Steve,
Probably nothing, however it is something to be concerned about because
so much depends on your local FAA (FSDO) and their opinion as to what
constitutes the 51% rule. So until the new rule is out, you are probably wise
to at
least be concerned. And hopefully the new rule will spell out what is legal
so the "local opinion" is removed from the equation.
You probably understand what got all this started, and of course kits
like the Lightning and builders assistance programs for them had nothing to do
with the current FAA concerns and the new rule being worked on. As far as I
know there has never been a question or concern by the FAA or any DAR as to
whether the Lightning represents a 51% kit. And obviously with at least 22 of
them flying, the airworthiness certificates are obviously being presented to
the builders which means the FAA is happy with how each builder has been
able to document that he did 51%. The current concern or problem came up with
the introduction of factory assist programs for the very complex, high
performance, (pressurized, turbo jet, etc) airplanes that had to be built at the
factory. There is just no way that an individual builder was able to build
something so complex at home and was not really doing any fabrication or work
at
the factory that came near accomplishing 51% of the processes to complete
these types of airplanes. That is the FAA concern and the reason for the
current situation.
At least the FAA once again has asked the EAA to be involved and as a
result I believe that the best solution will be forthcoming. Lets hope so.
Bottom line, I think the USA still has and will continue to have the best
regulations for building and flying experimental aircraft.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Buz,
Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough response. You answered my
questions and allayed my concerns. I was afraid that even though 20 or so
Lightnings are flying in the USA that something had all of sudden changed
that jeopardizes the rest of us, especially those in the builders' assist
program. I'm glad you could shed some light on a situation I didn't
understand. We should be thankful we have the EAA as our advocate and we
live in the USA where we still have more aviation freedom than any other
place on earth.
