Subject: | Lightning Weight and Balance |
Please find attached simple excel spreadsheet to edit for those that
don't have one.
I'm assuming that the C of G limits that Brian has put on his note are
'operational'. If not the 'OKs + Fail' numbers may need adjusting.
Maybe needs tweaking a bit.
Regards Clive

Subject: Lightning-List: Lightning Weight and Balance
In the past there have been requests for weight and
balance data for the Lightning. Keep in mind that this is an
experimental and therefore your aircraft will depend on
what you put into it. I typed up a weight and balance from the
demonstrator. I know that this will get out of order
when I put it in an email, but if you want the info it shouldn't be too
hard to
figure out how to get it spaced back out right. It
should give you an idea of how much you can carry and where you can
carry it

This is good steer from Buz as usual, just a blow to find out when you
think you have the latest engine that you don't.
The UK dealer has made the same comments as Buz regards the power,
difference small and still over 120 hp, not worth the hassle of a new
cam that will cost quite a few shillings. Cruise speed is king for me
and as long as I get a good range at a good turn of speed then that will
do. My efforts once the plane gets in the air (if ever) will be on
making it as slippery as Buz's.
The paperwork is now with the IVW (Dutch FAA) and I await feedback on
what else they need. Then CAA exemption, PFA assessement blah blah blah
Regards, Clive
The only UK Esqual...and was that a mistake...

To all on the List,
Thanks to Clive to getting this serial number info out. However, if
you happen to have one of these engines do not be concerned. You still
have a great engine that produces an honest 120 HP (or even more when
broken in) and you don't have to worry about adjusting the valves on a
regular basis as many of us do.
I think it was me that initially mentioned this power/rpm issue on
the list some time ago after flying the original Lightning Demo on a
flight evaluation. After my flight I casually mentioned to Nick that
the engine seems to be down slightly on top end rpm (and thus power)
when at WOT. He confirmed that he had also noticed this and that the
factory was working on a new cam profile to get the last few rpm back to
where it was before. The only reason I noticed this is that I have
flown enough Lightning airframe, engine, and propeller combinations at
WOT while testing different props that I suspected something that Nick
confirmed. Now really, how often will you be running your engine at WOT
(wide open throttle) so that these last few rpm will be important? I
am willing to bet that unless you have done lots of prop testing on
Lightnings that you would never have noticed this. It just isn't that
big a deal for the way you will be normally operating your airplane.
All of the prop testing that Nick and I have done is to come up with the
optimum prop set up for various airframe configurations - meaning a
Lightning at various weights or the Light Sport compliant model.
Bottom line - equip your Lightning the way you want it, but when
deciding how you really want to equip it, strive to keep it light and
then build it "straight". As to building it straight, the factory now
uses a wing incidence setting tool to insure both wings are the same
when they go on the first time. This has been discussed on the list
before with a photo of the incidence tool that Nick developed. If you
just align the inboard wing profile with the fuselage profile, you may
or may not "get it perfect". Only a small amount can make a difference.
Once you start flying and you find that you have a "hands off" roll
while the stick is centered and the ailerons are neutral, the only way
to fix the problem of a "heavy wing" is to lower the flap slightly on
the "heavy" side. Of course that adds some drag because you are
increasing lift on that side, but it is what you need to do because the
other wing has a slightly higher incidence and thus slightly more lift.
Now more lift on both sides means slightly more total drag, and drag is
the enemy when you want to cruise fast. Hope this is not confusing.
These two things (keeping it light and building it straight) will
have more to do with higher cruise speed than the last few rpm that your
can turn when WOT with some specific propeller. So don't sweat it if
you have one of these interim engines. And no, Jabiru did not ask me to
say this. I just don't want to see folks stressing about something that
really won't make much difference on the way they will operate their
aircraft.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Comments ex. Jabiru about a week ago. The power increase with the new cam on the
four cylinder is something less than 2 HP. Testing on the 6 cylinder is not
complete but, by extrapolation, likely to be 2 to 3 HP.
My take on this is that this whole thing is pretty much a non event, for practical
purposes there will be no effect. If in doubt, add 50 revs in the cruise
and you will be at least as fast as the bloke with the new cam. Alternatively,
clean the bugs off it and give it a polish and ditto.
Cheers, Selwyn

I just wanted to let you know I don't think I'll be getting a trim kit
for the Esqual. I'll save it for the new Lightning. I decided to try
this, "photos", and believe it or not it works great. It took out about
75% of the tension from the bungee and trims at a slower rate. Took
about 20 minutes to install and both elevators are working together. I
still require slight nose down trim to keep the auto pilot from
searching for altitude. Thanks again, Dave

Hello Dave
I just read your email about the trim tabs on your Esqual. I noticed you
are going to build a Lightning. Are you going to sell your Esqual and if
so, what will you ask?

Wayne, you are the winner - new flap hinge covers. A great tease shot by
Pete. In the next Lightning newsletter that will go out later tonight I had
intended to include a photo of the new 2008 Demo's wing which shows these
being fitted. I totally forgot it. However, at the same time that Nick was
developing these, the Australian detachment of the Lightning skunk works was also
developing the same thing. You will see photos of these in the next
newsletter.

Hello Listers,
Issue number two of the Lightning Newsletter is attached. It is rather
long at 14 pages, but hopefully everyone will find it both interesting and
informative. The "long" article is about the history of Arion Aircraft and the
Lightning. Much of that article was derived from one that Pete has written
for a future issue of Sport Aviation. I modified it with some inputs of my
own based on my past four year friendship with the Tennessee group and several
of their dealers. You will see inputs by several builders and that is what
we need to keep the newsletter worthwhile for the long haul. So send me
something to publish in future issues. Photos also, please.
And a suggestion for you. Print a copy (or two) of the Lightning
newsletter and take it to the airport that you fly out of. Leave it in the pilot's
lounge or pin a copy on the bulletin board for others to read. Hopefully
some interested person will read it and call one of the dealers. Yep, it's
cheap advertising. But the more Lightnings that sell, the better the product
will be and the more desirable the airplane will be. Heck, your airplane will
hold it value better if there is a good demand for them.
My next request is for feedback - I really want to know what you think.
Are we on the right track? What can we do better? I need any and all
suggestions and inputs. Hopefully at least one of you will say, "Shack, Lead".
Blue Skies,
Buz Rich
