Peter, Those flap gaps filled in and flap hinge covers look great! Any chance that you could see me a couple of those pics in higher resolution? The results of all of my gap seal experiments are in and a TAS of 6 knots was gained just by closing up that area under the wing mainly. Never got a chance to test that with the flap hinge fairings, but figure o n 2-3 knots which is what is typical for hinge fairings alone. Of course a dding both will only increase the benefits, so it's quiet possible that you r extra time and effort has gained you 10 extra knots of speed or a decreas e in fuel burn at the same cruise speed. Trying to get the extra 10 knots is going to be more than just 50 RPM for an aircraft unmodified like this a nd therefore should be a good decrease in fuel consumption if you travel at the original cruise speed. Get that carb set up right and get a good prop on that plane and you'll have quiet possibly the fastest Lightning out the re! Keep us updated once you get to test it! Thanks, Brian W. P.S. Mind if I put one of those pics in the recommendations section of my t hesis? As you might have guessed, this is what I would do instead of gap s eals for a composite aircraft application in order to keep from having to m aintain actual gap seals. Dave, That does look good. It's kind of funny. A similar fixed tab trim was used on the Jabiru kits which are also sold at SYI. It's amazing what suc h a small area added to the rear of the tail can do. Thanks for the pics. Brian W. From: corky@hbci.comTo: lightning-list@matronics.comSubject: Lightning-List : trimDate: Fri, 14 Mar 2008 17:12:30 -0500 Nick I just wanted to let you know I don't think I'll be getting a trim kit for the Esqual. I'll save it for the new Lightning. I decided to try this, "ph otos", and believe it or not it works great. It took out about 75% of the t ension from the bungee and trims at a slower rate. Took about 20 minutes t o install and both elevators are working together. I still require slight nose down trim to keep the auto pilot from searching for altitude. Thanks again, Dave _________________________________________________________________ Shed those extra pounds with MSN and The Biggest Loser! http://biggestloser.msn.com/

I will be flying the Cub down as I have had it up here the last few weeks mentoring a neighborhood kit that has just started taking lessons. Obviously the first tailwheel time he has and he is having a hard time even taxiing. Any way, I may be giving J3 rides after the meeting if you are interested. Buz **************It's Tax Time! Hi Lynn, So maybe you are #60 - the Your name, Your town, call Dana - guy. I am sure she will keep me updated for future issues. When you start your build on 21 April, how about giving the newsletter some progress photos and words during your experience. Something along the lines of "Here is the progress after week one, week two, etc. with photos and words to explain what all has been done. Yes, Sun-N-Fun is getting close and I hope we have a good turnout. Nick or Pete, if you are reading this how about setting a time and place for a get together. Also, did you get a Lightning forum scheduled for this year? I will be arriving early again this year - weather permitting will get there 4 April - and will be camping again with my friends in the Vintage area. Will be volunteering in the Type Club Tent at the American Bonanza Society table for a few hours each day. We probably need a "sign in" sheet at the Arion booth so we can see who has arrived and leave messages for each other. Blue Skies, Buz **************It's Tax Time! I've seen several people ask the question about somebody else's email address. If the person you're interested in sending an email to has posted on the Matronics site, their personal email should be posted at the top of every matronics email. For example, here's what was on the top of the email from peter disher: Lightning-List: Flap hindge covers - 5 pictures for you owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com <BLOCKED::mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com> ; on behalf of; Peter and Jan Disher [pjdisher@bigpond.com] In this case, Peter's personal email is pjdisher@bigpond.com <BLOCKED::mailto:pjdisher@bigpond.com> . Maybe my email client is the only one that shows it?

Peter, Thanks, that's what I was wanting. Those 5 pictures give me a good ide a. Looks exactly what I sketched out for Lamont at Jabiru. It's basically a minimum clearance with sloping lines so that it's not harsh angles. Gre at job of fabricating. Also really good at sealing up that gap in the wing . We got the exact same stall speed with flaps in the up position. With t hem in the down position I would expect that stall speed will increase slig htly, but not much. Takeoff run will be a tiny percentage more, but say it 's 1.5% of a 500-600 foot takeoff roll, you're talking about less than 10 f eet. Control pressures were identical to the unmodified aircraft. Oh, and the 6 knots gain that I got with our gap seal experiment on the Lightning was at a cruise of 2850 RPM. The trend is towards the faster that you go t he more you'll see from these cleanups. Again, great job and let us know o nce you get in the air and start testing it what kind of speeds and fuel bu rns that you get. Thanks for the pics, Brian W. oh, and my personal email is dashvii@hotmail.com if anybody wants to email me.
