I think Jim is onto something as apparently several others do. Here
are some suggestions we already have that incorporate the name Arion:
Arion=99s Voice, The Arion Authority, The Arion Discharge and
Thr Arion Flash. Once again, I don't think too much about the Arion
Discharge, even though lightning is an electrical discharge. Sounds too
much like some bad medical condition.

The picture on the left definately looks like something metal. I would sec
ond that it is probably something to do with the new overhead latch system.
The one on the right intrigues me though. Compare those flap hinge fairi
ngs to the photos of Peter's plane from the newsletter. Did Arion change t
he flap hinge design? It appears that these fairings go straight into the
wing instead of taking the curve at the front. It could be an optical illu
sion, or they could have just stretched the fairing out so that it would go
stright into the wing. This is also a low res copy, but I can't make out
either of the inside flap hinge fairings which are longer and fit right nex
t to the fuselage. Could be that you just can't see them in this copy, but
there are no hinge fairings in that location to tip off that they're even t
here. Of course I also happen to know that the three that are on each wing
and are shown are the same lengths, and that the inside ones are longer, s
o perhaps they just hadn't gotten around to fabricating the longer ones. W
ho knows. I am fairly certain that the thing on the left was made of metal
though. Still anxious to see pics of the new wingtips. (and the supercha
rged 450hp 8 cylinder version ;-P )

After Looking at the photo again that Pete teased us with, I am now not too
sure I got it right, saying it was part of the new flap hinge fairing. Hi
s photo is below, along with one that Nick had sent me some time ago and th
at photo does show the flap hinge fairings as they are being fitted to the
new 2008 Demo wing. I think we need some new guesses on Pete's photo.

Unless I'm mistaken, those flap hinge covers look like they are from a
Jabiru airplane. I spoke with Nick about using them for hinge covers back
in August of last year when they mistakenly sent some to me at Green
Landings. The problem at the time was getting around the open back of the
cover which would create turbulence. Peter seems to have come up with a
nice solution for that.

into the wing instead of taking the curve at the front. It could be an
optical illusion, or they could have just stretched the fairing out so that
it would go stright into the wing. This is also a low res copy, but I can't
make out either of the inside flap hinge fairings which are longer and fit
right next to the fuselage. Could be that you just can't see them in this
copy, but there are no hinge fairings in that location to tip off that
they're even there. Of course I also happen to know that the three that are
on each wing and are shown are the same lengths, and that the inside ones
are longer, so perhaps they just hadn't gotten around to fabricating the
longer ones. Who knows. I am fairly certain that the thing on the left was
made of metal though. Still anxious to see pics of the new wingtips. (and
the supercharged 450hp 8 cylinder version ;-P )

g if they would fit it would be the quickest thing to do. Your stated prob
lem was one that needed to be solved though. Looks like they did that. I'
m still not seeing anything over the ones closest inboard though. Maybe be

the American Yankee Association based on the first 2-place product. Now there
is an ongoing discussion about changing the name to include the other models

I think the four names all sound good, but we might be overlooking an
exposure. If the company name is included in the N/L title, it may imply
that Arion agrees with, and supports all of the content. Since
newsletters, like blogs, contain much opinion and anecdotal information,
this potentially could create a problem for Arion. If others agree that
this is an exposure, and we incorporate Arion in the name, perhaps a
disclaimer should be included to distance Arion from data they would not
support.

Hi Brian,
I have the CAD program (I think it is CAD that Nick sent to me some time
ago) that shows the new tips and the program allows you to rotate the basic
drawing to view it from any angle. Neat program. I will put some pixs of
the new tip in the next newsletter.
For those of you that might be new to the list, these new tips will
extend the Lightning wing and thus increase the wing area in order to lower the
clean stall speed. Up until now, most Lightnings that were built to meet
light sport parameters used VGs to get the clean stall to 45 knots or below.
Depending on how light you built your Lightning, some have been able to made the
max stall speed without VGs. For example, I think Earl's N17EF was able to
meet the 45 knot limit without VGs, but Earl worked at keeping his airplane
very light. There may be others as well. But with these new tips, the stall
should be below 45 knots clean for all Lightnings. Arion may have a
pre-production tip to show at Sun-N-Fun or Oshkosh, but Nick will test fly them
on
the prototype before they become available for the production airplane.
For builders that think they may want to use these new tips on your
airplane, and you are building now, the thing to do is to install the current
tips with screws so that they can be removed and the new tips added in the
future. The other thing to do (or not to do) if you want your Lightning to meet
light sport parameters is to not install the "go fast" gear leg fairings and
wheel pants. You can probably install some other wheel pants, but the
standard Lightning pants are the latest style and will really clean up your airplane
and thus cruise too fast at the max continuous rpm that is published for the
Jab 3300.

Buz,
Thanks, I'll look forward to seeing those wingtip extensions. If they l
ook like what we talked about it'll add a little more wing area without add
ing much drag penalty (adding a foot of length to each wing would gain abou
t 6 sq. feet if memory serves, and therefore over 6% additional wing area,
base on 90 some odd sq. ft. of wing area total) This should help for those
flying long cross countries to have an even more stable ride and increase
climb rates and decrease takeoff rolls.
On a side note, for anybody closing up that flap gap that added these tips,
they'd cause slightly more drag, but I doubt you'd loose more than maybe 1
knot on speed, but it should give back anything lost due to an increased t
akeoff roll for closing off the gap being offset by more wing area. It wou
ld also lower the stall speed. Brian W.

Buz, As you know, my thesis which was over flight testing gap seals on th
e Arion Lightning, goes to print in a few days. It came out to about 130is
h pages long. I won't bore everybodywith the details, but I can give you a
short maybe 1 page write-up on my results before and aftermodification. S
ome of the results were as expected, others were interesting, but overall a
very positive indication of increased performance. Taking away from that,
it also shows why it is important to take your time and build your airplan
e as straight as possible. Free speed, free gas, just for taking the extra
time and attention to detail. It was fun, and I hope that it helped Arion
and some others onthe list out, but I'll be glad to be done with it! (on
my last round of revisions right now!) Brian W.

Seems like everyone has a good St.Paddy's story!
Mine is a "wee bit" long, hope you "appreciate" it......
Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking budd
y, Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Mary. He tiptoed
as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom
, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banis
ter, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bot
tle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful. Man
aging not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in th
e hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed
to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as be
st he could on each place he saw blood. He then hid the now almost empty B
and-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to b ed. In the morning, Fly
nn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at
him from across the room. She said, 'You were drunk again last night weren
't you?' Flynn said, 'Why you say such a mean thing?' 'Well,' Mary said,
'it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the botto
m of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house,
it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids s
tuck on the hall mirror.
