But, several questions come to mind from seeing what has been done with this latest Lightning produced by Arion. 1. Silver (?) paint versus white as the primary color. Begs the question about composite aircraft colors and heat and its impact on the aircraft structure. 2. Viewing the canopy pictures I noticed that the support brackets appear to be only present on one side of the canopy support/pivot arms. Is this another change/modification to how the canopy frame is attached and is there any beefup inside the canopy frame structure that makes this possible or what? Here's a general question for the list. I'm considering a Trio autopilot system for my Lightning. I'd like to hear from those who have them installed and what they have to say about them and autopilots in general on this aircraft. One guy tried to convince them of it's reflective properties with data but no success. Francesc used it on his Esqual demonstrators but they were carbon. BUT, take a look at all the Pulsars that are Green, dark red, even black. Last time I groped a silver plane next to a white one there was only a very small difference in surface temperature. Maybe this is special paint? Sure looks good, ala Cirrus or is it the other one? I wanted to get it out before I head off to Sun-N-Fun next Friday, so at least I have met that goal. Due to "delta sierra" weather I am still in SYI and may be here until Wednesday if the forecast turns out to be valid. That said, I will be too busy when I do get back to Virginia to do anything but prepare for my flight to Lakeland. So you are getting the newsletter a few days earlier than I expected, but since I put it together pretty quickly there may be typos, etc. Linda must be out of town, as my e-mail request for another superb editing job went unanswered. She really has done a great job for the past issues. Again, I am putting out another request for inputs to "your" newsletter. That is what will be required to keep it both informative and interesting. I just received a very informative e-mail from Pete Disher in Australia with 18 more pictures of his Lightning project. I will certainly include that in the next issue, so you can look forward to that, but that is an excellent example of the type of information that will be interesting to other Lightning builders. Also, in the next issue will be some information on Earl Ferguson's world record Lightning flight. He finally received the FAI certified document, so it is official that the Lightning (and Earl) holds a world record. Next issue will also include some info on Sun-N-Fun. Hopefully many of you will be there. If so, there will be a Lightning forum on Wednesday at noon in the forum tents. And then on Thursday at noon will be the yearly Lightning list get together at the Arion Lightning booth. Be there, aloha! Blue Skies, Buz PS: Give me some feedback on the newsletter. It is hard to know if I am on target if I don't hear from you. So comments and suggestions are certainly appreciated. **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. The entire structure is much more rigid and does not flex or "move around" as you open it. Add to that the new latching handle overhead and you get a much better overall canopy design. I think it even opens a little wider making ingress easier. On the photo that I will add below you can also see the new instrument panel and instrument panel cover. The black panel cover is part of the airframe, and the gray panel attaches to that. The panel itself can be removed, but if you use the large Grand Rapids EFIS you can pull one of them out to give yourself great access to behind the panel. The canopy latching mechanism is also a great improvement as shown in the second photo. Blue Skies, Buz **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. While the Pulsar looked so cool to me about a year ago, the Lightning looks so much cleaner, and continues to get better as Arion makes little improvements along the way. I can't wait to see what it looks like another year from now. Have you chosen your panel display, (gauges, or MFD/EFIS)? If you are thinking of a Dynon, or MGL, they both are developing a "plug in" autopilot that can be added to their existing systems. I know that my MGL Odyssey will very shortly be able to drive servos with all the auto pilot functions running in software inside the unit. This is an exciting time with many new developments. Jim! Thanks................Bill in Tucson, kit #49. ________________________________ Message 22 ____________________________________ Time: 09:03:04 PM PST US From: "Larry Eubanks" Subject: RE: Lightning-List: New Lightning Demo The first picture is a Kis not a Pulsar, the second is light yellow that I mentioned does exist. The third is Bon Hartlines very pale green Pulsar, not at all a dark color. The designer still only recommends white for any areas that will get warm and no amount of pictures will change that. Paint one black if you live in Antarctica I suppose. I think the lightning is a great looking plane or I wouldn't be lurking here but at this point I can't afford all of the fast build components.I have more time than money. I built my Pulsar for 25 thousand and it works great for me but it is still not in the class of the Lightning. The best I can do is 160 cruise at 4 gph (Jabiru 2200) but it is small, with not a lot of room for passengers. I will be at Sun N Fun so if you see a guy with a Pulsar hat drooling over the Lightnings its probably me. There is also a maroon one, can't imagine a white recomendation got past the PFA but anything is possible I suppose.
