Subject: | Real Time List Participation |
Hello All,
I have been rec'ing the daily digests of the list.
According to the list FAQ's, this prevents me from seeing attachments.
I have read-around trying to figure this out, but I think the only way to
see the attachments is to get on the "real-time" list?
I can't seem to figure out how to do this, so I am sending an email for
help.
(Reading out formation flight pics and newsletter attachments but not seeing
them is quite frustrating. Luckily, Jimslightning has been posting the
newsletters so I have only left a few small marks in the wall from beating
my forehead against it)
Regards,
Jim Hausch
PS - headed out to Shelbyville in late May for a visit!

Hi,
Were you flying the prototype when you took this picture? If so, it must be the
new wingtips being tested that we see on your wing.

I arrived at the hangar just a little after 7 AM he was already in the cockpit
with the engine running. Even though we had light rain, he flew another
test profile while the ceiling was high enough. This afternoon the rain left
and the weather improved and he flew several more test flights. On one of
those flights we briefed a short formation sortie so that I could get some airborne
shots, one of which is below. It really looks great in the air even
though the wheel pants are not on yet. They have been fitted and will likely
go to the paint shop tomorrow.

No, Yho, the photo was made by a friend of Nick's in an RV-6A. I am on
Nick's wing in my airplane with the slightly modified Esqual wing tips. The new
Lightning tips are supposed to arrive via UPS later this week and be on
display at SNF. I have not seen them yet - only the renderings from the Cad
program that I put in the newsletter. Flight testing will begin on them sometime
after SNF.
Look at the new demo to see what is missing from previous airborne shots.

Sounds good Buz. No rush. Unfortunately, I can't be there in time for the
two get togethers; (I'll be there Friday and Saturday), as some of us
non-retired guys need to work during the week. (Oh, for that job in
aviation.... sigh...)
Look forward to seeing the gang!
Then when I get back, we can put my bird in the air!

Hello Lightning List members, The following may come as a surprise to
some of you, but since the word has gotten out, at least in the Shelbyv

someone gets a photo, it doesn't take long before it shows up on some pu
blic media or the internet and then the world will know the so called su
rprise announcement that Arion has been trying to keep secret so that th
ey could make big news at Sun-N-Fun. So attached you will find a photo
of the new 2008 Lightning Demonstrator which clearly "lets the cat out o
f the bag". As I am sure you all realize, all aerial photos shown to da
te have shown the new demo in the normal configuration. This photo show
s the big surprise. It was made by an aerial photographer who was hired
by Arion to provide a photo for their new brochure. Unfortunately, whi
le the photographer was away from his shop over the weekend, a worker th
ere gave the photo to the local newspaper thinking that this photo was s
upposed to be part of a package of Arion Lightning photos that they had
for an article on Earl Ferguson's world record flight. Besides Nick in
324AL, you will see me in 32BZ. I was there to monitor the initial test
to the new configuration. I can report that all went well. In fact, t
oday I finally got to fly two sorties in 324AL as part of the 40 hour te
st profile. At some time in the future (after the test phase) I will do
a detailed flight evaluation for the newsletter. I am looking forward
to that, but until then, take a look at this neat photo and the surprise
that Arion was planning to announce at SNF.Blue Skies,Buz

Okay group, here's a riddle of sorts for you:
What flies higher than a U-2 Habu spyplane,
Faster than an Recon SR-71 Blackbird,
Does not have wheels of wings,
Has flown for over 10 years without ever landing to refuel,
weighs over 600,000 pounds,
and has never been fully assembeled?
Oh, and finally, what does it have to do with me?

Rick,
Close! International Space Station is correct, but my wife works on the

though, is that I will be teaching astronauts how to use equipment and taki

Lynn,
Thanks for asking, things are going pretty well. Very busy time as my w
ife is pushing through her Life Support Certification and I am about to cha
nge jobs. We are also looking for a house and I finally finished my thesis
. My current boss (about 3 levels up in management actually) stopped and t
alked to me and said that he leave if NASA would take him. He told me it w
as a great oppurtunity and that it would be the right choice and something
that I could build a career around. Kind of a cool send off. How are thin
gs going for you? Seems like this is a busy time of the year for the guys
at Arion and just people in general. Abnormally warm and kind of dry here
right now, but things are generally well! Thanks for asking, Brian W.

Hey Brian: Sounds like you have it under control. I was glad to hear that
you got your thesis finished. Did the lightning info help a lot?
I am doing well thanks. I expect to start on my lightning on the 21st,

much money to build the Lightning. I should have done it last year, but felt
it was going to cost too much. We only go round once, so it makes sense to
get it done while I can enjoy it for a few years.

Lynn,
My thesis has went to print. The guys at Arion basically supported my p
roject. All fuel and flight costs paid for. In addition I got a chance to
borrow Nick to allow me to not have to fly and record everything myself.
They also took a chance by having somebody that did not work for them basic
ally verifying performance of their aircraft independently. I'm proud to s
ay that it performs pretty much as is advertised. There were some interest
ing and a few unexpected results of the experiments. Look for the results
of my experiments in a future issue of the Lightning Flash. Good luck on s
elling the plane. I know that it's a pretty good and popular aircraft. I'
m willing to bet that you'll like the Lightning even more though! Brian W.

Hey Brian: Sounds like you have it under control. I was glad to hear that y
ou got your thesis finished. Did the lightning info help a lot?
I am doing well thanks. I expect to start on my lightning on the 21st,
so I have lots to look forward to. I have been getting my 601 HD ready to s

Rick,
Thanks! I'm like a kid in a candy store. I put in my resume almost six
months ago, and they just got around to interviewing people. I'm going to
love being around the space station components, various hardware for futur
e missions, and be around astronauts. Even though I'll be only a small pie
ce in the puzzle, kind of seems like I'll be doing something really importa
nt in the grand scheme of things. Will be nice to get back into a more sci
entific line of work too! How's your jet doing? Get to fly her much right
now? Brian W.

Rick, Close! International Space Station is correct, but my wife works o
n the Space Shuttle. I just accepted a new job to work on a contract for t
he ISS! It is on the projects side and therefore a "big picture" type of a
thing. We will be engineering equipment for the space station, return to
the moon, and beyond! (or whatever the next administration comes up with af
ter election time) We will also be loading and cataloging experiments. My
division will be concerning health and bone and muscle loss. The coolest
part though, is that I will be teaching astronauts how to use equipment and
taking down critiques in order to modify existing equipment. Specific ans

Okay group, here's a riddle of sorts for you: What flies higher than a U-2

wings,Has flown for over 10 years without ever landing to refuel, weighs ove
r 600,000 pounds, and has never been fully assembeled? Oh, and finally, what
does it have to do with me?Brian W :-)

Subject: | Flight from SYI to JGG |
After a busy two weeks at Arion HQ I finally flew back to Virginia today.
Great flight and I will cover some figures below. But first, let me say a few
words about my visit. Although I had intended to only stay a week to ten
days, the weather over the TN / NC / VA mountains and near "home plate" kept me
from flying home before today. The extra time allowed me to help the guys a
little more and I hope that is some small way it makes their preparation for
SNF easier.
I have mentioned the test flights I did in the prototype testing out the
new trim system. You have already heard Nick and me say how much better we
thought it was. But one other benefit of the extra test sorties is that we
have decided to make the trim tab a little larger. We even tried two other
sizes on the prototype and that knowledge is what determined the final size of
the tab for those that order the kit.
The extra time also allowed me to help with fitting the gear leg
fairings, wheel pants, and a few other final details to get the new 2008 Demo
ready
for SNF. I also was able to fly it on two test sorties and logged about 2.7
hours on it. At some time in the future (probably early May) I will go back
to Tennessee and do a flight evaluation for the newsletter. I don't want to
do that until it has the fairings and pants, so the performance will be what
a builder can expect.
Now for my fight back home today. Remember I had an effective 40 +
knots headwind going out there, so I was expecting about that much tail wind
coming home. Well, it was wasn't quite that good, but close. Initially out of
SYI there was only 15 knots of tail wind as I climbed to 7.5. However soon
had to go to 11.5 to clear some build ups near Knoxville. At 11.5 the winds
were 20 on the tail but by the time I got to central Virginia I had 30 to 35.
It was neat to occasionally see a ground speed of around 200 mph.
On previous postings I have mentioned that my cross country cruise
technique is to set a fuel flow and go with what ever speed that gives me at the
altitude I am flying at. I normally set it around 6 gph for cruise and by the
time I pull the power back for descent and the flow decreases, my flight
average will be about 5.8 gph and my average speed will be 160 TAS mph or so.
I
average my speed from the time I take the runway to the time I turn off the
runway, so that includes my takeoff roll, climb to altitude, descent, pattern
entry and landing. If I just look at cruise speed at altitude it will be
about 170. The above are pretty much no wind.
With today's winds, my runway to runway speed worked out to about 189 mph so
I guess the tail wind average was 25 to 30 mph. But I did one other thing
different today. Instead of setting a fuel flow of 6 gph, today, knowing I
had a tailwind, I set it at 5 while at cruise. Now remember it is much higher
during the initial climb to 7.5 and then the climb to 11.5. Having said that
my average fuel burn for the entire trip was 5.3 gph. That is measured from
engine start, taxi out, TO, climb cruise at 7.5, climb to 11.5, cruise,
descent, landing and taxi in. I used 15.5 gallons for the 550 mile trip that
took 2.9 hours of flying time from runway to runway. If you want to impress
your non pilot friends that works out to 35.5 mpg at 190 mph - yes the wind
helped, but no wind it would still be about 31 mpg at 160 mph - beats any car
I
know about.
Hope to see lots of the Lightning listers at SNF. Remember the Wed noon
forum and the Thur noon get together at the Lightning booth.
Blue Skies,
Buz
PS: Just to confirm, the previous message about the "cat out of the bag"
was actually a bag of "bravo sierra" seeing that it was 1 April. Now you know
for sure. Some thought there really was a retractable gear on the new 2008
Demo. Sorry.

Brian,
That's fantastic. I am happy for you. Next thing you know, we will be
calling you a rocket scientist.
I do have to make one slight comment about your "riddle". The U-2's
nickname is Dragon Lady. Habu is a call sign used by the SR- 71 Blackbirds.
Next
thing we know you will be briefing us on Blackswift, Aurora, and Darkstar
(both Mike and November). I can now mention all those since there has already
been some leak to the public.
Congratulations,
Buz
