The crash was reported yesterday evening via TV. The URL for the newspaper story is: http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/241810 Jerry's Lightning is serial number 7 according to the March 2008 Newsletter. I met and talked to Jerry a number of times and found him to be a very enthusiastic builder, always willing to give great advice on how to proceed in the build process. Aviation was a real love for him and it showed in the way he communicated his building experiences when I talked to him. I will miss his friendly helpful attitude and his willingness to share what he knew and learned about his Lightning and aviation in general. The crash occurred near Greg Hobbs airstrip in Marana AZ. All of us at Arion Aircraft extend our most sincere condolences to Jerry's family. We will post all facts as we gather them about the crash and factors that may have contributed to the crash. Nick will be in Marana tomorrow and will inspect the wreckage to gather information and facts about the accident. Right now we can report that the prop and prop hub departed the aircraft at some point a good distance before the point of impact. We do not have additional facts at this time. We will pass on any other facts that we gather to the Lightning community and will assist the FAA and NTSB with their investigation and will report any conclusions from those groups. Again, our condolences to Jerry's family. The accident was described to me as follows: -Jerry was doing touch-and-go's at Marana Airport. -After takeoff, he climbed to pattern altitude -all the propeller bolts sheared and the prop spun off the engine -Jerry was able to drop the nose and establish a glide in the pattern for a dead stick landing -during the "base to final" turn, his air speed may have been too slow and caused the "stall/spin" into the ground. I am told that, for some reason, Jerry or others, had just re-adjusted the left aileron noticeably lower than the right aileron. It is suspected that this may have contributed to the stall/spin scenario. At this time, we do not know why this adjustment was performed. I have read reports about propeller nuts/bolts working loose when installed on wood props, but not shearing them. Has anyone else had this problem? Additionally, is it customary to adjust ailerons so unbalanced as described above? Thanks Gary ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 02:56:44 PM PST US From: "Pete" Subject: RE: Lightning-List: Fatal crash of Lightning Aircraft I know we all want more information but please be patient and we hope we can get some facts directly from the FAA and NTSB rather than from "someone told me" or the "accident was described to me" type of info. All I do know for sure is that the scenario below as described by Gary is factually inaccurate on most of the points. As I posted earlier, Nick is going to Marana tomorrow and will get as many actual facts first hand. We will post those on this forum as soon as we have them but will not engage in speculation and rumors. Much of the below information is inaccurate. We have released a short statement and will continue to be open will all as factual and accurate information is gathered and reviewed by either the FAA or the NTSB. There are only a few witnesses to the accident and we know whom they are and what is fact to this point, and that information was released earlier. Please again lets be respectful and let those who know do their jobs to give us an accurate and factual account of the events. During this time my thoughts and prayers are also on the Arion family both immediate and exten ded. I am very glad that Nick will beon scene tomorrow to assess the situa tion first hand. The group right now is farily small and a closeknit bunch and I know that there are a lot of heavy hearts and minds today and in the days to come. In a time like this you can't make any sense out of why th e things happen that do. I was not fortunate enough to have met Jerry othe r than through this mailing list. Let me tell you some thingsthat I "know" about him though because he told me. Looking back through my old emails I find thathe was a friendly guy. He welcomed new comers to the list and wa nted to hear about their back stories and get advice from those guys who ha ve been there and done that. He also wasn't a first time builder. He had bu ilt and flown a pretty little open cockpit parasol airplane. Upon seeing t he Esqual and thenthe Lightning he described it as his "dream lives on" tal king about not knowing if he would ever fly again after medical issues. Fi nally, the last thing that I found a posting from him on he left off with " hope to be flying in formation with you soon." This guy loved flying, frie nds, and family. I'd like to think thatthis formation flight that he talke d about is now with an angel tucked in tight on the left and right, with a good tail wind and blue skies.
