Buz I got a call from Carl and he ask me if I had you on my Insurance? The
answer is no. I would need the following information to get you on the
insurance and I don't know if I can do it in a couple of hours. Carl said
that you were coming up today to fly him and while I really appreciate your
help I don't know how long it will take to get you on the policy.
To get you on my policy I have to call Falcon as soon as they open and hope
I get to talk to someone and then I will have to send them the following
information
Total Time
Ratings
Physical date
Time in type
If you don't want to do it without being on the insurance I understand.
Warmest Regards,
John Davis

Hello Bill
Thank you for the "heads up". I didn't know that. For those of us who
are building their airplanes at home, all these "tricks of the trade"
should be included in the Manual. Otherwise, we could be making some
costly mistakes.
Thanks again Bill.
Have a great day.

Subject: Lightning-List: Builders Tip: Engine Info
Good morning all,
For those of you who have not found it as yet, the Engine Manual and
all of the current SBs are found here:
http://www.usjabiru.com/<http://www.usjabiru.com/>
There you will find more complete instructions on mounting the engine,
removing the supplied prop flange and installing the new 2" prop
extension procedures along with diagrams on wiring up the engine to
include suggested cockpit switches as well.
The manual is not shipped with the engine. Also, the engine is
shipped upside down in the crate so the crate sides and top need to be
removed to get to the engine shipping hold downs so you can remove it
from the bottom of the shipping crate. Additionally, you will need to
figure out how to turn the engine over (get it right side up) so you can
sling it for mounting. For my install it required three people to do
this and mount the engine onto the motor mount, two to hold the engine
steady and one to maneuver the engine hoist to align it into the engine
mount. This requires some care and thought as there are some very
breakable parts on the rear of the engine and there is very little room
for fitting them through the mount while attaching the engine to it. Go
slow and be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry careful!!!
Nick, I recommend that this be added as a reference in the "Installing
the Engine" section of the builder's manual.
Additionally, Nick recommends that you install the cowl so that the
spinner is about .125" high. The rubber mounts will sag after 40-50
hours or so of engine running according to Nick.
Question: For those who have their birds flying now with those kinds
of hours on them are they seeing this kind of engine "sag"?
Bill in Tucson with kit #49 with engine installed, removing and
stalling prop extensions and the cowl today. Build and fly safe!!!

Hey Lightning fans,
I have been fighting wheel shimmy for quite a while on N59JL; the
shimmy would start at about 18 kts ground speed. I changed to highest
grade Goodyear tires, tried aluminum angle on the main gear legs to
stiffen the legs, tack welded some shim stock around the axles, etc.
Some of it helped but it seemed to deteriorate again recently. Today I
took the tires/wheels to a local motorcycle shop to get the wheels
balanced; he found that both wheels were out of balance requiring 3/4 oz
weight on one side and 1/2 oz weight on the other. After adding the
weights and reinstalling the tires, I did some taxi testing with great
results. I taxied up to 36 kts GS and no shimmy. Hooray!
If you are experiencing shimmy, you might try this first.
Looking forward to seeing some of you next week at SYI.
Linda

John,
You probably have heard by now, but I think Carl and Pat have about
decided to build a Lightning so it will be exactly the airplane they want.
Yesterday when I got here they were looking at new Jabirus, a used Jabiru and
of
course the Lightning kit as well as your airplane. Pete and Nick had OKed me
flying Carl over to fly your bird in the demo Lightning. When they couldn't
get you on the phone I took them both flying in the new demo plus they sat
down with Pete and Mark to discuss what it would take to make several changes
to your bird. I think the main things were the new wing tip extensions, new
panel "things" and wheel pants. Anyway, the plan was for me to fly Carl over
today, but this morning when they came in they had decided to build their own
Lightning. I actually think that is what Pat wanted to do all along, and
she must have convinced Carl that they should have it exactly as they wanted
it (paint, interior, instrument panel, everything new, and they could get an
FAA Repairman's certificate).
As I said in the previous message I will do what I can to help you out,
but I would have felt better if I knew that I was on your insurance just in
case there were engine problems or what ever. So if this type of thing comes
up again, just tell Falcon that they already have all the information on me.
Pete has me on his policy with Falcon so that I can fly any of his airplanes
(Lightnings and Jabiurs), plus, I have me Esqual insured with Falcon (my Cub
is insured with AVEMCO).
Any chance you will get over next Saturday for the second annual
Lightning Fly-IN? Hopefully there will be lots of potential Lighting customers
here
and one of them might be interested in your "jet".
Blue Skies,
Buz

My apologies to the list. My last message to John Davis was meant to go
directly to him. These darn 'puters have me all messed up.
