Subject: | List Fund Raiser |
A couple of years ago I implemented an automatic "squelch button" of sorts for
the Fund Raiser messages. Here's how it works... As soon as a List member makes
a
Contribution through the Matronics Fund Raiser web site, he or she will instantly
cease to receive these Fund Raiser messages for the rest of the month! Its
just that simple. Don't you wish PBS worked that way! :-)
I really do appreciate each and every one of your individual Contributions to support
the Lists. It is your support that enables me to upgrade the hardware
and
software that are required to run a List Site like this. It also goes to pay for
the commercial-grade Internet connection and to pay the huge electric bill
to
keep the computer gear running and the air conditioner powered on. I run all of
the Matronics Email List and Forums sites here locally which allows me to
control and monitor every aspect of the system for the utmost in reliably and performance.
Your personal Contribution matters because, when combined with other Listers such
as yourself, it pays the bills to keep this site up and running. I accept
exactly ZERO advertising dollars for the Matronics Lists sites. I can't stand
the pop-up ads and all other commercials that are so prevalent on the Internet
these days and I particularly don't want to have it on my Email List sites.
If you appreciate the ad-free, grass-roots, down-home feel of the Matronics Email
Lists, please make a Contribution to keep it that way!!

The "Z" numbers are all Ryco filter numbers, and tend to be the often quoted filter numbers here, but everybody and his dog makes "equivalents" and sells them through el cheapo automotive outlets. The Z15 is a basic nylon enclosed pleated paper filter designed to get the large lumps out of fuel. http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/product/part/Z15
The Fram G1 is similar. I have a ryco Z15 as a primary filter on the long range
tank of my 4WD which has had about 20,000 km worth of diesel through it and
shows no sign of blocking, so it is not a fine filter.
The oil filter may be a little more critical and my feeling is that you would do
well to source a high quality equivalent.
On a more general note, why do we have the Z15's in the fuel system anyway? In
Jabs they are the main (only?) filter in the fuel system but in the Lightning
we have finger filters in the tank pickups which will get out anything likely
to block the fuel lines and a gascolator which will get out anything likely to
block the jets, what do the Z15's do for us except introduce another source
of leaks and blockages?

Subject: | Re: Fuel Filters |
Good question Selwyn, we should only filter what can block jets or
damage pumps. Let the rest pass through.
In my microlight days we used a nylon mesh filter that allowed a certain
size of crud to pass through. Previously folk had used paper filters and
had issues with them as they blocked up at awkward times (when folk were
flying). They also collected water.
A reasonably fine nylon mesh filter was the standard fit for the Rotaxes
that I flew in those days.
I used to back flush it once a year to get rid of what it had caught
when I did the annual. They had a see though case so you could visually
check them anytime you had the covers off.
My Esqual was supplied with nylon mesh filters and that's what I fitted.
My Jabiru has the Ryco supplied one though I'm going to look out for a
nylon one for that too. I don't have a gascolator, I do drain the tanks
before every flight and after every refuel.

Gary,
Napa's equivalent to the Ryco Z386 oil filter works just fine in
the 3300. I can't remember the part number but it is readily available
in the U.S.

Hello Anthony
I noticed you listed an oil filter for the Jab 3300 as Z386. What
brand is that? Is it available in the US?
Thanks

Jim
They are just cheap ones from the local auto cheap store, no
brand. Same place I obtain oil filters (Z386) and NGK plugs.
As a matter of interest what needle jet, main jets have you fitted
and how many turns out for the idle jet?
How's the election going?
Anthony

What are you all using for fuel filters?
Also, has everyone used the supplied fuel line?

Subject: | FW: 26 Turn Flat Spin in a Tipsy Nipper |
Worth a look if you have 5 mins to spare. Regards, Clive
The text from Neil that goes with the video is a follows (If you don't
know what happened then read this before watching the video)
"The spin was supposed to be a normal erect spin to the right, but for
various unintentional reasons the spin went flat, up until that point I
had never flat spun an aircraft. I eventualy mananged to get the
aircraft into a normal erect spin from which I was able to recover. This
aircraft is not fitted with an electric starter motor, so I was unable
to restart the engine. During the "flare" to land the main undercarriage
caught the top wires of a barbed wire fence that was invisible to me.
After coming to rest inverted I waited 20mins for the rescue services to
come and right the aircraft so I was able to exit via the outward
opening canopy. The aircraft rotated 26 times total, I was extremely
dissorientated after the recovery to straight and level flight, and was
unable to read the instruments. From the video I estimate I recovered at
about 700ft from an entry altitude of 3500ft. If you listen carefully
you will hear me say:"I think this is it". At that stage I did not think
I would be able to recover. However I continued to try various control
inputs based on the aircraft attitude and rotational rate, which
eventually effected a recovery.
My thanks go to the emergency services that found me and allowed my
escape."

Did the email address you made your Contribution with match the email address that
was subscribed to the List *exactly*? This is how the filtering is done and
if they didn't match exactly, it wouldn't have filtered. Also, the filtering
is subject to the limitations described below.
