Subject: Fund Raiser List of Contributors - Please Make A Contribution
Today! Each year at the end of the List Fund Raiser, I post a message acknowledging everyone that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its sort of my way of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation for the Lists. Won't you take a moment and assure that your name is on that List of Contributors (LOC)? As a number of members have pointed out over the years, the List seems at least - if not a whole lot more - valuable as a building/flying/recreating/entertainment tool as your typical magazine subscription! Please take minute and assure that your name is on this year's LOC! Show others that you appreciate the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is fast and easy using your Credit card or Paypal on the Secure Web Site: http://www.matronics.com/contribution or by dropping a personal check in the mail to: Matt Dralle / Matronics PO Box 347 Livermore CA 94551-0347 I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus far in this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps these Lists going and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about how the Lists have helped you! Best regards, Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Administrator

    Subject: Veteran's Day
All=2C I know there are a lot of veteran's that frequent this site. I just want ed to say thank you for your service to our great country. I am currently in Colorado (Canon City) attending the funeral of my wife's grandfather. I don't think that he would have wanted anybody to lie about him and say that he was a great family man=2C or a good church going fellow =2C but he was a veteran and served his country to the best of his abilitie s. His name was William "Bill" Abercrombie. He flew PT-19's=2C PT-22's=2C PT-23's=2C L-5's=2C AT-6's=2C P-51's=2C P-40's=2C and O-??'s. He transitio ned to the Lbirds and Observation aircraft when he had a hearing issue that kept him from flying high. Even though going from a hot P-51 to an Lbird wouldn't be most people's choice=2C it kept him in the air and in the Army Air Corp/Air Force. His service will be on Veteran's Day which I think is fitting. It is sad to see=2C but all of his old war buddies are gone alrea dy. I don't guess that you can really ever say happy Veteran's Day=2C but I just wanted to pass along my respects to all those=2C both young and old who are active=2C reserve=2C guard=2C or retired from the services. Gary, Ask Tex about his innovation for that. nick _____ From: owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of GARY PENNINGTON Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2008 8:28 AM Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Fitting Windows Good morning Paul I cut my windows down with a jig saw to rough size and then used an air sander to smooth them to final size. To hold them in place while bonding them, I drilled 1/8" holes around the edge and installed Cleco's. See attached photo. When the epoxy was almost cured, I removed the Cleco's and soaked them in Lacquer thinner to remove any epoxy stuck to the Cleco. It worked well for me. I've been trying to figure out how to prevent binding and rubbing of the Rudder cables on the fiberglass stiffener webs at the aft end of the fuselage. I first tried to install the "U" shaped brackets a little loose so they would swivel. It helped but did not solve the problem. I ground the fiberglass away as much as possible but it still rubs and binds up. The fasteners at the end of the Rudder cables are rigid steel and about 4" long. They do not flex! There must be a better way to do this. Any ideas? Have a great day. Gary Pennington ----- Original Message ----- From: Colin <mailto:cjk129@cox.net> J. Good morning This message is for Tex. Sorry I sent it to everyone, but I did not know how to only contact Tex. Anyway....Tex, I understand from Nick that you have found a way to address the binding of the rudder cables where routed through the stiffener webs at the aft end of the Lightning. Would you please share with me? Thanks Gary Pennington

Some time ago we were talking about the rudder cables. Enclosed is what I have done to lessen the binding and twisting of the cables and prventing them from touching the fuse. I have taken .050 stainless steel and made two strapes (2 " long ),which create a universal like connection for the rudder. I just cut then twisted in a vice to get a 90* degree in the strap. Now the cable end can tilt and rotate in all directions. Tex

Geez Paul!! A little excited are we?? ;-) To all, about 45 minutes ago, N82PB was the 33rd Lightning to fly. It was an uneventful 30 minute flight - all systems in the green and she flies straight and level. Hopefully I can post a short video tomorrow. Congratulations to Paul Bryant. The fuel valve,or valves, must be labeled. And the capacity of fuel must also be shown. What have you guys who have finished your lighting done? Tex

    Subject: Paint Colours
    From: "Wayne Patterson" <Wayne@lpwa.net>
I realise this has been discussed before - but I am interested in any current testing / research / sound advice re the use of dark colo(u)rs on the Lightning. I note that the Cirrus Ad in the Loop Magazine covering this year's Oshkosh shows nearly all models with a very dark red upper fuse. Is their composite construction significantly different to the Lightning? (in terms of being heat sensitive). We are keen to paint our Lightning with a dark upper fuse (close to the Cirrus current style) but as always - would like verification (preferably research based) of the implications. A motoring organisation in Australia measured surface temps on cars (metal) for different roof colours - and they found some difference when the car was in direct sunlight (perhaps 20%) - but most interestingly, that any colour other than white (including silver & light yellow) lifted the surface temperature to about the same level as any of the really dark colours. Is a 20% increase significant? Bearing in mind that we don't live in Minnesota - and that the summer day temps at ground level in Perth regularly reach 100F and sometimes reach over 115F. All info appreciated! Wayne Patterson LOUGHTON PATTERSON GROUP PO Box 398 South Perth 6951 AUSTRALIA
