To Group, I will have to take the b lame for this one and I am sorry for not having it the build manual. During the first flight of the prototype we noticed a heavy buffet in the tail plane when in high angle of attack situations. Like slow turns, say under 110knts. Or slow with no flaps. With out the gaps between the wings sealed there is a significant root wake formed. This will buffet the tail plane when the tail plane is down in the situations listed above. The wake is created thru the gaps and the spar and other attachments which cause very good turbulence. With the gap sealed, there is not buffet , i.e smooth airflow about the fuse and tail plane. I have been guilty of forgetting myself on a few occasions with the exact same results. No it is not fun and will give you quite a pucker factor..discontinue the flight as soon as possible if you have forgot and find out on the first flight! So, seal the wing root gaps!!! Subject: New EFIS on the Horizon
All=2C In the past decade we have seen a revolution in cockpit technology as af fordable EFIS and AHRS have made their way into GA cockpits. I grew up in the computer age and find it fairly easy to switch between different EFIS d isplays. I realize that many of you=2C and many of the engineers who desig n these systems did not though. I have been looking for something more exc iting. I have been envisioning a series of smart MFD's that would have use r definable presets=2C intuitive use=2C and touch sensitive. Alas=2C they are not available....yet. What I found was a unique system that if it works as advertise will be an i ncredible leap forward. I mean this would leave the B787 pilots wanting. Imagine a touch screen system that uses some of the same technology as the I-Phone. When the display is off it simply looks like a shiny piece of pla stic. When the displays come to life they are crisp and readable in the su nlight. They give you the ability to have a virtual horizon=2C engine disp lay=2C navigational display=2C moving map=2C VHF and built in transponder =2C traffic avoidance=2C digital music input=2C auto CG and in flight weigh t determination=2C and much more. Pair it up with the Smartstick or Smarty oke display and you'll get a small quick select menu which can control ligh ts=2C display the top 10 nearest airports with a direct to function=2C set all radios to a "home" airport=2C dial cell phone numbers and pipe it throu gh your headset=2C control panel display brightness=2C and display all your personal checklists. The displays come in a 3.7 inch screen and a 5.7 inc h screen and both panels are around 1.5 inches deep. All displays link up and cross communicate with one another. If your digital radio fails for wh atever reason on one screen then you can pull it up on another screen addin g redundance. If your engine fails in flight it can be set to display the appropriate checklist. Alternator stops charging the battery=2C pulls up t hat appropriate checklist. Change your mind and want to go to another airp ort off-course=2C or want to add in a waypoint you simply touch the screen where you want to add that in. For me I love the data collecting and analy sis. Well=2C with one of the functions it will record all flight=2C GPS Na v=2C and engine data for the entire flight to a USB drive. It is true that it's still in development. Last year they were projecting the price for 8 displays to run around $13=2C000. That's still a little st eep for a lot of people=2C but how much of that functionality do you have w ith your current setup? If you get 2 screens what does that come out to be ? I'm not sure=2C but I think that it'd be pretty competitive pricing. Yo u could have a fully customized panel (similar to some custom audio car pan els) which would look almost entirely like a single piece of shiny black pl astic when the system is off=2C and then when you power it up it all comes alive. For you old military types=2C they also plan to have an optional HU D. Plenty of other goodies like an integrated black box=2C autopilot=2C tr im=2C flaps=2C backup battery=2C RAT (Ram Air Turbine for emergency power). It also is supposed to draw about 500mA per display. Do the math on that =2C it's really good. Just armchair flying and dreaming of the not too distant future. Check it out for yourselves here: http://www.pkaviation.com.au/page8.htm and here: h ttp://www.pkaviation.com.au/page19.htm P.S. The Aveorack rocker switches are pretty sweet too. Let me know what y ou guys think. Brian W. _________________________________________________________________ It=92s the same Hotmail=AE.
