Thanks for the kind words, Gary. I hope to meet you also. I am once again
planning to be at both Sun-N-Fun and Oshkosh. How about you? Normally the
Lightning guys plan a "Meet and Greet" session for all interested in the
Lightning at both SNF and Oshkosh. I am sure they will again this year. It
is a good time to meet others on the list and share information about the
Lightning. Lets hope that many Lightnings show up at SNF this year. I know
World Record Earl will be there, lets just hope he is not wearing his world
record "flight suit".

Folks I'd like to make a suggestion. If you change the subject in the e-mail
please change the subject line. People that probably have chosen not to open
AVN100 latest rants will probably miss suggestions such as these.
It also makes searches in the future a little easier when the content
matches the subject line.
This isn't a grenade lobbed at Jim in particular, lots of us have done it.
It's just a suggestion to make the list a little easier to use.
Have a great day!

Hi Mark:
I am installing my new panel box this weekend. I noticed that some people
cut out a section in the top to allow access to the wiring and plumbing from
the top. Do you guys do this? If so, I would guess that you cut a square
out and then hinge it? I am just comparing what you are doing with this to
what others are doing.
Any pics?
I also thought about cutting a clean rectangle out and gluing some tabs
under the corners so that I could attach it with velcro instead of a hinge?
Thanks
Jim!

Hi Jim,
We don't make any cutouts in the top of the panel box here. I'm not sure
about the Velcro, it will stay put but what would it look like? Maybe a
hinge and a couple camlocs? You'd still have to fabricate a flange for the
panel to rest on in the closed position.
In the past when we've had problems, removal of one or both of the EFIS
screens usually gave me enough access. Of course anything can happen and the
repair/troubleshooting might require more access. At that point I would just
pull the whole panel out, providing you have enough of a service loop in
your wiring. One of the reasons Nick made a separate place for the control
cables was for situations such as this.
I don't have any pics, sorry. Does anyone else out there have pictures to
share??
Have a great day!
Mark

At one point I was even thinking about hinging the bottom of the panel face
plate so it could swing down with access to everything behind it without
having to remove an EFIS. I bagged the idea because I felt like it would
possibly take away some of the panel rigidity.

Subject: | Funny - Smarter than a 5th grader? |
All=2C
Some time ago I was looking through the archived JSC newsletters. Ther
e are some interesting articles and interviews from the early days of the s
pace program. It's not my aim to tell you about those though. They had an
issue around 1969 when we first went to the moon. They had some funny wri
te-ins from young people in the local area. One that I spotted and copied
to my desktop was sent in by a fifth grader. Sorry in advance to: pilots
=2C Naval officers=2C women=2C furry animals=2C etc. etc. Anyhow=2C I got
a good laugh out of it.
"I want to be a Navy pilot when I grow up because it is fun and easy to do.
Pilots don't need much school=2C they just have to learn numbers so they
can read instruments. I guess they should be able to read maps so they can
find their way if they are lost. Pilots should be brave so they won't be
scared if it's foggy and they can't see if a wing or motor falls off they s
hould stay calm so they'll know what to do. Pilots have to have good eyes
so they can see through clouds and they can't be afraid of lightning or thu
nder because they are closer to them then we are. The salary that pilots m
ake is another thing I like. They make more money than they can spend. Th
is is because most people think that airplane flying is dangerous except pi
lots don't because they know how easy it is. There isn't much that I don't
like=2C except girls like pilots and all the stewardesses want to marry th
em so they always have to chase them away so they don't bother them. I hop
e that I don't get airsick because if I do I couldn't be a pilot and would
have to go to work."

I'm planning to hinge mine with short lengths of strap or cord on the lower edge.
When closed it will still be held by the full complement of screws and cage
nuts, when these are removed it will swing down for access but still be held
in approximate position to prevent strain on connections.
Bearing in mind that this is the "new style" instrument box, so a little different

Subject: Lightning-List: Funny - Smarter than a 5th grader?
All,
=C2-=C2-=C2- Some time ago I was looking through the archived JSC news
letters.=C2- There are some interesting articles and interviews from the e
arly days of the space program.=C2- It's not my aim to tell you about thos
e though.=C2- They had an issue around 1969 when we first went to the moon
.=C2- They had some funny write-ins from young people in the local area.
=C2- One that I spotted and copied to my desktop was sent in by a fifth gr
ader.=C2- Sorry in advance to: pilots, Naval officers, women, furry animal
s, etc. etc.=C2- Anyhow, I got a good laugh out of it.
=C2-
"I want to be a Navy pilot when I grow up because it is fun and easy to do.
=C2- Pilots don't need much school, they just have to learn numbers so the
y can read instruments.=C2- I guess they should be able to read maps so th
ey can find their way if they are lost.=C2- Pilots should be brave so they
won't be scared if it's foggy and they can't see if a wing or motor falls o
ff they should stay calm so they'll know what to do.=C2- Pilots have to ha
ve good eyes so they can see through clouds and they can't be afraid of ligh
tning or thunder because they are closer to them then we are.=C2- The sala
ry that pilots make is another thing I like.=C2- They make more money tha
n they can spend.=C2- This is because most people think that airplane flyi
ng is dangerous except pilots don't because they know how easy it is.=C2-
There isn't much that I don't like, except girls like pilots and all the ste
wardesses want to marry them so they always have to chase them away so they
don't bother them.=C2- I hope that I don't get airsick because if I do I c
ouldn't be a pilot and would have to go to work."
=C2-
Enjoy, Brian W.
