Stay away from high hurricane season which is roughly Aug to Oct. Sun N Fun will be upon us pretty quick and there will be a lot of prep to do. Could be done if there is demand, but remember I would still be healing a new hip and don't know how my hip doc would react. Who knows, maybe he can be persuaded to go with us! Thanks to Brian for admitting he is working on one ( like you don't have enough to do). Brian mentions X-Plane and for those who don't already know it is very likely that there will be limited support from Microsoft as cutbacks in staffing have included the group that developed the popular Flight Simulator series, too bad IMHO. However X-Plane another flight sim package (and a very nice one as well) is still strong and welcoming MS customers. Since X-Plane is pretty flexible (from what I've heard) this should be a very doable project. Along those lines perhaps we can use this thread to include suggestions for Brain (EFIS equipment has already come up) during development. I personally have to convert from MS and have found that it should not be a big deal- Check out X-Plane...http://www.x-plane.com/default.html Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=229533#229533 ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 06:53:04 AM PST US Subject: Lightning-List: Re: Hip & Trip From: "Larzfromarz" I am glad to hear things are recovering well. I'd encourage you to get healthy for SNF, am looking forward to meeting this gang. BTW was it you who had Blue Mountain equipment? I thought I recalled someone in GA in the group had it? X-Plane is much more flexible in aircraft design and gives more realistic flight characteristics than the other brand. Currently 'flying' RV's and Sonex in X-plane. Would like to try the X-plane Lightning. Not much knowledge yet in X-plane's Planemaker, but learning fast. Jim, We'll see how it goes. I know how to make like a very basic dial instrument work, but I think that the EFIS is very doable. I do think it will be much harder than modeling the aircraft. I want my main emphasis to be on making the aircraft realistic looking and realistic flight qualities. Secondarily I want to start with the GRT EFIS and try to make it fairly realistic. I believe that Grand Rapids essentially has a simulator on their website for the avionics. It can help me get through that one. I also want to make 3 versions of the aircraft. One being the original wing, one with the long wing, and one being the long wing sport version. It's been a while since I have flown a Lightning, and during that time the plane has advanced signifigantly in many areas. I flew a less stable and different feeling aircraft. I'll likely have to get a second look to discuss if I've got an accurate model. I bet that Nick will volunteer to try it out. Hey Buz, you wanna fly down here and check it out after I finish? It's also important to note that this will be a fairly long term project. I would like to get the 3 versions of the plane and a cockpit done within a year timeframe. I'll probably do a basic 6 pack cockpit to start with and move on to a glass cockpit. The great thing is that Xplane offers free upgrades to new versions as long as you keep them up to date and it would appear to be very little rework if I got 8/10s through the project and upgraded to a new version. In the end I also want to create a sort of "fan film" if you will which can be used as a promo for the Lightning. I had originally planned to do this in 4 different Lightnings in real life film. It is very difficult to capture film in a real airplane though. I also ended up moving fairly unexpectedly and don't have access to Lightnings on a daily basis anymore. I welcome any comments though. We'll see if I can accomodate some of them. I might eventually offer the model for like a $10 fee or something just to help cover my time, but we'll see. I think Xplane runs about $40 and has photo realistic scenery. Thanks for your interest. Brian W.
