ALL,
Just a comment about Buz's speeds. Or Nick's for that matter.
If you have see his bird, you will understand that it has near perfect fit
and finish. Nothing hangs out in the air causing a disturbance. The
evidence for that is related to the rpms he is turning to get those speeds. Not
only is he running a prop with a lot of pitch, but he is also able to turn it
up to 3300 rpms at WOT and altitude.
My observation is that it is easy to get a less that perfect fit of wing to
fuselage, sloppy fairings and mis-fited wheel pants. All that makes a
difference.
Further evidence is that he has Esqual wing which is slower and has higher
lift at low speeds than the Lightning wing....or at least what I have observed.
Pardon me for repeating this, but I think the prop selection has even more
to do with speed... I think it is possible to get a 10-15mph speed variation
just by having a slightly miss-matched prop.
I would further note that Buz's solid lifter engine is well broken in!! I
think it can take 100 hours of proper break-in to get the compressions up
and even. All that makes a difference also.
Not to mention that he is running 100LL. Perhaps at economy settings,
mogas will deliver economy, but I doubt it will deliver the POWER. Fuel flow
varies depending on where the carb needles are positioned and the set up of the
jetting. Buz and Nick have carefully matched the jetting to the prop.
In my opinion, the max speeds possible in a Lightning are achieved with some
serious tweeking and serious attention to detail, AFTER achieving max
performance with engine and prop.
If you are mostly a fun pilot who makes short runs on weekends as a stress
reliever, some obsession with max speeds may be counter-productive.

I hope it is the METAL canister type.
A resident of Green Landings had a clear plastic filter on his fuel
hose that had a replaceable element. Tho it had given some years of
service, when ethanol came along with the Amoco fuel, the plastic got
soft and then cracked open. Since it was hooked to an electrically
driven pump, there was a period of drama with gasoline being sprayed
about the hangar.
My opinion is that careful thought and observation should be given
to the components of a fuel system these days, particularly since
ethanol can bring a variety of problems. I think hoses, filters and
the fuel itself should be carefully inspected frequently.

Good morning fellow flyers
Last night I introduced my Lightning to Night Flight. All went well.
I departed Marana Airport at around 6:00 pm and the air was incredibly
smooth! Nary a bobble. I flew East over the valley to the Catalina
Mountains and then North and West around the Tortolita Mountains. The
sun was setting which cast shadows behind the rocky outcroppings. The
giant Saguaro Cactus cast long shadows like pointing fingers indicating
the end of another day. City lights began to twinkle like Christmas Tree
lights.
After the sun said goodbye, I headed back to the airport for full stop
landings, (six in all). I clicked my microphone switch seven times and
watched while the runway lights came alive. Pretty cool stuff. This was
a good time to become current again for carrying passengers at night.
The air was smooth and calm, the landings were good and life is great.
One word of caution. If you plan on using your landing lights to
illuminate the runway....don't. I installed lights in both wings. They
are worthless. Thank goodness for runway edge lights!
I hope your day is great.

Perfect fit and finish is a must but if you have seen either garys or waynes
they are darn close, real good looking aircraft. I hate to throw a wrench
into your theory but the prototype, again with many hours on her and a solid
lifter engine. Is equipped with buddys old wood prop that we could only get
2550 or 2600 on takeoff with his, easily turns to 2800-2900 on take off by
the prototype. Speeds above 150 IAS are easy at 5k.
A lightning which just went home to FL was running 162TAS @ 8k with 2950
turning. Those are performance numbers we got before it left and what it was
running on the way down.

Hi Wayne,
Assuming your numbers are at 5000' density altitude, here are 5000' DA
numbers at 2850 rpm with the two props:
2850 rpm
64ZK55 = 150 MPH, true airspeed burning 4.8 gph
62FK60 = 158 MPH, true airspeed burning 5.6 gph
Take off roll is not much longer with the 60 inch pitch. In fact, I have
never had a takeoff roll longer than about 700 to 800' even on a 100 degree day
at gross weight. Takeoff roll rpm is about the same with both props.
Climb rate is only slightly lower with the 60 inch pitch when I hole either
100 mph or 115 mph. Both speeds give me about 1200 feet per minute at gross
weight. However, climb rpm with the 60 inch pitch prop is about 2600 vice
the 2700 I get with the ZK prop. The 2700 rpm is better because it is closer
to the power curve of the engine, but as I mentioned the 60 prop gives about
the same climb even when at the slightly slower rpm in the climb.
One other thought - since I normally set 6 gph cruise speed when on a long
cross country here is what that does with both props - numbers still at 5000
even though I normally am higher when XC.
6 GPH
64ZK55 = 157, and that is at 2980 rpm
62FK60 = 162, and that is at 2880 rpm
NOTE: These speeds go up 2 to 3 mph as fuel is burned down at he end of a
four hour flight.
Buz

nch pitch when I hole either 100 mph or 115 mph. Both speeds give me ab
out 1200 feet per minute at gross weight. However, climb rpm with the 6
0 inch pitch prop is about 2600 vice the 2700 I get with the ZK prop. T
he 2700 rpm is better because it is closer to the power curve of the eng
ine, but as I mentioned the 60 prop gives about the same climb even when
at the slightly slower rpm in the climb. One other thought - since I
normally set 6 gph cruise speed when on a long cross country here is wha
t that does with both props - numbers still at 5000 even though I normal
ly am higher when XC. 6 GPH64ZK55 = 157, and that is at 2980 rpm 62FK6
0 = 162, and that is at 2880 rpmNOTE: These speeds go up 2 to 3 mph a
s fuel is burned down at he end of a four hour flight. Buz

All,
I keep forgetting to ask - Has anyone experienced the Lightning Laugh
recently? I suspect that Gary has, as he has been telling us about some of his
fun flights in Arizona. Are you still laughing, Gary? And probably Lynn
and Bear have as well, since they are in Florida. But it sure has been darn
cold here on the east coast. So is anyone else experiencing that Lightning
laugh every time you fly your Lightning? Better than an RV grin? Or a "store
bought C, P or B" grimace? When you get done laughing, send me some works
for the next newsletter. I am starting on the next issue of the newsletter
now, since it is below freezing even during the warmest part of the day for a
while. So get busy and give me something to do involving writing about flying.
Blue Skies (but damn cold),
Buz

Is it possible that it's your angle that the lights are mounted? I reme
mber seeing buzz during the day when he'd turn his on and it looked like an
airliner (albeit much smaller) coming in. Alot of the new LED Bulbs seem
to be much brighter and use less energy than their older counterparts. Bri

Good morning fellow flyers
Last night I introduced my Lightning to Night Flight. All went well.
I departed Marana Airport at around 6:00 pm and the air was incredibly smoo
th! Nary a bobble. I flew East over the valley to the Catalina Mountains an
d then North and West around the Tortolita Mountains. The sun was setting w
hich cast shadows behind the rocky outcroppings. The giant Saguaro Cactus c
ast long shadows like pointing fingers indicating the end of another day. C
ity lights began to twinkle like Christmas Tree lights.
After the sun said goodbye=2C I headed back to the airport for full stop la
ndings=2C (six in all). I clicked my microphone switch seven times and watc
hed while the runway lights came alive. Pretty cool stuff. This was a good
time to become current again for carrying passengers at night. The air was
smooth and calm=2C the landings were good and life is great.
One word of caution. If you plan on using your landing lights to illuminat
e the runway....don't. I installed lights in both wings. They are worthless
. Thank goodness for runway edge lights!
I hope your day is great.
Gary Pennington

I believe that in Greg's plane we got high 140's=2C 2950 RPM at 10k and bur
ning 6.5Gph. There were some fuel issues though. We had a stuck sump whic
h was pouring for half the flight and there were some jetting issues. Bria

Hi Wayne=2C
Assuming your numbers are at 5000' density altitude=2C here are 5000' D
A numbers at 2850 rpm with the two props:
2850 rpm
64ZK55 = 150 MPH=2C true airspeed burning 4.8 gph
62FK60 = 158 MPH=2C true airspeed burning 5.6 gph
Take off roll is not much longer with the 60 inch pitch. In fact=2C I have
never had a takeoff roll longer than about 700 to 800' even on a 100 degre
e day at gross weight. Takeoff roll rpm is about the same with both props.
