Subject: | More on the newsletter. |
All,
My thanks to everyone that took the time and effort to respond to the
email about the safety articles in the Lightning newsletter. We actually had
very good response numbers with some answering on the list and some writing
directly to me. I really do appreciate all of you sharing your thoughts and
suggestions. It shows me that you really do care about YOUR newsletter.
The basic question boils down to whether or not the newsletter should
include safety information. While most readers agree that Lightning specific
safety information would be appropriate, there was basically a 50/50 split on
whether we should include generic flight safety articles that would apply to any
aircraft. As the upcoming issue of the Lightning newsletter is now being
written, I still have not made a final decision on this subject. However, in
the upcoming April issue the Other Items and Final Thoughts sections will
include two safety type articles that I had already written- one on crosswind
landings and one on grass runway operations. Although both articles have
some mention of the Lightning and some specific techniques that I use, both
articles would probably be helpful to any type of aircraft. You can be the
judge as to whether these are worthy of being in the newsletter and send me your
thought after the April issue is published.
Now, one other question, which kind of goes back to the newsletter survey I
sent out some time ago. There has been a suggestion that the newsletter is
too long - saying it is more like a magazine. So I am asking - What are your
thoughts on how long the newsletter should be? And if you consider it too
long, what type of articles or information presently covered should be totally
cut to get it down to that length? Again, any and all suggestions are
requested. I need your input to identify what our "target" really is. Other
than
that, don't forget to renew your subscription. ;-)

Buz=2C
IMHO=2C the types of articles that should be included in future Lightnin
g Newsletters should be specificly for the Lightning. I think that you can
certainly cover even basic things like grass runway takeoffs and landings
as seen from the Lightning driver's seat. I would think though that the ne
wsletter should cover anything that might be unexpected difference that a L
ightning owner might experience if they had only ever flown Cherokees and 1
72's before. I think this will help cut down the time and effort that you
and Linda have to put into the newsletter as a side benefit to you. I real
ly believe that the scope of the newsletter is narrower than we've made it.
Having said that=2C I would be foolish not to read articles=2C even on the
basics=2C from pilots like yourself who have a lot of time and more importa
ntly=2C good decision making skills. My young mind and skills crave "quali
fied knowledge."
So=2C in short=2C I'm saying that you should scale down the Lightning Newsl
etter and also be asked to write articles for AOPA. :-) Brian W.

Buz:
Thanks for the great work you are doing with spreading the knowledge around
to the Lightning crowd. I wanted to respond to your question regarding the
length of the newsletter. Understand that I am not complaining, but rather
suggesting an alternate path.
I believe the newsletter should be very focused with a lesser number of
pages, (around 8 and no more than 15).. For example, Vans NL is 20 pages,
Zenith is around 12 pages every other month, and Murphy just posts an update
on their web site every so often. The newsletter could center around one or
two feature articles of moderate to short length, (not more than a page).
If there is a longer article to publish, maybe hold it to one for that
month. Any other updates like reports, or customer feedback could be
limited to a paragraph. Better to have more comments in short blurbs than
one or two longer comments. Ancillary information like safety, or flying
tips and the like should be Lightning specific and held to small articles, a
couple of paragraphs. I love the idea of featuring a customer aircraft each
month, but limit the page space for it to a quarter page. These are just a
couple of things that stand out in my mind.
I think if we optimize the space we are using we might find that the overall
content stays about the same, but we cut the size of the newsletter in half.
Jim!

Hey Buz:
As usual, I am late in responding. I always have too much to do. I greatly
appreciate your efforts at putting out a great news letter. It does seem to
be getting longer, and must take a lot more of your time to write 25 - 28
pages than 8 - 15. Each an every one has been terrific as well as informative.
I
finally got time to re-balance my right tire/wheel and have gotten rid of most
of my landing gear vibration.
I agree with Jim's comments on the size of the newsletter. I can
understand how it must be difficult keeping it under control (there is so much
good
stuff to write about).
The Lightning is such a responsive light plane, I feel very fortunate that I
was able to convince my wife to let me sell the Bonanza and build the
Lightning. I would never be able to pull off the job you are doing and remain in
awe as to your abilities.
Please keep it coming.

Buz,
I read my son's (Craig Aaron Sumner) reply "to all" regarding the safety
section of our newsletter. Aaron really enjoys reading from the experienced
pilots on lessons learned and tips that keep you from "buying the farm"!
That said, I believe the feedback from our readers is headed where I was
hoping to go with any future Safety topics. I think Linda is correct in not
repeating what is in other magazines or newsletters. Lightning/Esqual
safety specific topics would be great if we can keep them short and to the
point.

Buz, as for the size of the newsletter that's entirely your call. Its
your time and effort and what you spend doing it. Its really hard for
me to put into words how much it is appreciated. I am sure that everyone
gets plenty of info from reading it. They may not realize the time
involved doing a newsletter. Your flying experience and the ability to
put that into words is a gift most people don't have. We are blessed
that you do such a good job. So you call the shots on this and just send
me the address for the bill.
