I agree Earl: When pilots find out the performance and strength numbers
that go with the great looks of our Lightnings, it is pretty darn hard to not
buy one. My neighbors say mine looks like it is going 100 mph when sitting

I need your help
We all agree the lightning is far and above the best looking aircraft on
the market. I often get request for pictures from others that just want
to see what all the noise is about. I like to carry pictures or a DVD
to show off the aircraft when on trips. I would like to create a DVD of
every lightning possible and also make calendars, etc. that will aid our
dealers is selling the plane to others. If I make a DVD of our owners &
airplanes I could inclued owners pictures and pictures of others planes
(hot rods, bikes, cars etc).
Please email me pictures of your aircraft, at least two exterior shots
and two interior along with information on the aircraft. PLEASE send
them to me direct, not through matronics. I would prefer about 5 mb
size or as large as your camera will allow, do not down size for
mailing.
If 3 to 5 mb each sent one at a time otherwise if smaller send 2 at a
time.
If anyone that is going to S&F with a quality camera please send me
photos. Take care to find a pleasing background.
Lets see what we can do. Thanks Johnny Thompson, Tucson

Hey World Record Earl,
You have done a lot with your extensive efforts that resulted in the
Lightning's world record. I am sure it is the only SLSA with a world rec

in its history. So, how about another record? West to east this time?
Or you could trace the route of Santa or the Easter Bunny as they make th
eir
yearly rounds. Just a thought, your mileage may vary.

Johnny,
Super idea. I hope you get great response from all Lightning builder
s
and flyers. At one time, Nick, Ben and I talked about a DVD that could
be
shown in the airplane when it was on display at airshows. A small DVD
player either mounted in the panel or sitting on the dash could not only
show
photos of Lightnings and the building process, but could have a flying
video to show inflight cockpit shots, formation film (Brian was going to
film
that), and flybys made from the ground. Of course, with their busy
schedule, this never got further than "skunk work" talks when the "works"
team was
having a brew or two.
I have quite a few photos in the newsletter files that I will be gla
d
to share if you need them. So once this project gets under way, let me
know if you are missing someone's photos, and I will check the files to
see
if I have a photo or two of a particular airplane.

Hi Earl and everyone else.
One of the best things we can do to spread the word is to show up at Sun
n Fun and Oshkosh and show our planes off. If we can get 4 or 5
Lightnings parked in the homebuilt area I think we'd have a great
showing! If we're lucky maybe we can get a row started. Buz, you'll be
there first - can you ask?

Sure, I will do that. I would probably have more "pull" if we were
allowed to park in the Vintage area, but I will talk to the homebuilt park
ing
crew when I arrive at SNF tomorrow afternoon. So if you are going to fl
y to
SNF, let me know today so I can give them an idea of how many airplanes
we
are talking about. The more airplanes we have, the more likely they are
to
listen to this request. Also, I am sure everyone realizes that during th
e
flyin, at times the number of arriving aircraft can get overwhelming and
parking crews do their best just to get everyone safely parked. If you
arrive at one of these busy times, you may find yourself parked next to a
"belchfire 400" instead of where you want to be. If that is the case,
you may
be able to move later when things settle down. If you see several
Lightning in a parking row, walk there and save yourself a spot and move
your
aircraft later. Also be advised, all of the parking crew are volunteers
and
they get lots of "strange" request at times. Some of the crew are more
"friendly" and some can be, well, not so accommodating, so to speak. But
we
shall see. Lets have a great turn out. See you there.

Jim,
I know Nick and the crew are probably way too busy along now getting
ready to head to Sun N Fun. As of yesterday their plan was flying to
Lakeland on Saturday, setting up on Sunday, and probably visiting Fantasy
of
Flight on Monday. So I will attempt to answer your email based on what
I have
on the subject. The "copy" below is right from the POH for the LS-1, but
of course may have changed before it actually went to press. But for now
it
will give you an idea of what will be standard and what will be optional
on the SLSA Lightning. As to changes down the road, after a buyer owns
the
aircraft, it will likely be treated just like any other "certified"
aircraft wanting or needing an avionics change - work done and signed off
by an
appropriate IA and/or avionics shop.
See you at SNF.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Buz,
Why don't you call my wife and discuss this idea. Be sure to mention
funding. You've met Susan, so you don't need an intro. 404-351-5256 (H).
Seriously, we need to lobby the NAA (sanctioning body) for a Light Sport
record category. Meanwhile there are tons of possible speed records - pick
a
pair of airports or nav facilities at least 249 sm apart and get a record
for speed over a recognized course.. I came close to the class C-1a weigh
t
limit of 1103 lbs take off, but some of the later light sport Lightnings
are
lighter than N17EF, and could make it easily with a slim pilot (I weighte
d
155 lbs at the time). Non LSAs can go for records in the C-1b class (up
to
2205 lbs).
OK hot-rodders, who's up to the challenge?

I need your help
We all agree the lightning is far and above the best looking aircraft on
the market. I often get request for pictures from others that just want
to
see what all the noise is about. I like to carry pictures or a DVD to sh
ow
off the aircraft when on trips. I would like to create a DVD of every
lightning possible and also make calendars, etc. that will aid our dealer
s is
selling the plane to others. If I make a DVD of our owners & airplanes I
could inclued owners pictures and pictures of others planes (hot rods, bi
kes,
cars etc).
Please email me pictures of your aircraft, at least two exterior shots an
d
two interior along with information on the aircraft. PLEASE send them to
me direct, not through matronics. I would prefer about 5 mb size or as
large as your camera will allow, do not down size for mailing.
If 3 to 5 mb each sent one at a time otherwise if smaller send 2 at a tim
e.
If anyone that is going to S&F with a quality camera please send me
photos. Take care to find a pleasing background.
Lets see what we can do. Thanks Johnny Thompson, Tucson

Subject: | Tape /// Stick Grips |
I am considering the Infinity aerospaace military style stick grip to contral the
flaps and the electric trim tabs as well as a push-to-ytalk buttton. Anyone
have any expeerience with this company? Is fighter pilot style stick grip beneficial
in any way on a Lightning? I also need to buy the tape (in white) to
seal the gap where the wing meets the fuselage. Can anyone tell me the name of
the recommended tape for there. THx, CD

I've got the Infinity stick grips on my RV-8 and love them. I've got the buttons
as follows:
Trigger = PTT
Center Coolie Hat = Elev/Ail Trim
Left Top Toggle = Flaps
Right Top Green Push = Starter
Left Thumb Push = Autopilot Engage/Disengage
Pinky Push = VP-200/EFIS Ack Button
Pinky Pull = EFIS Page Swapping
JD at Infinity is great to work with and he will go to great lengths to get the
button configuration that just right for your installation and personal needs.
Basically, he can put any kind of button in any position.
The grips feel good in your hand and all button access is easy and intuitive.
Highly recommend.
I've included a wad of photos from my wiring and installation for reference.

Buz, you'll be there first - can you ask?
Sure, I will do that.- I would probably have more "pull" if we were allow

are to listen to this request.- Also, I am sure everyone realizes that d

the case, you may be able to move later when things settle down.- If you
see several Lightning in a parking row, walk there and save yourself a spo

volunteers and they get lots of "strange" request at times.- Some of the
