Subject: | I was wondering if it was broken.....some news and a tip! |
Was thinking of sending a test note.
All my bits for the Esqual upgrade left Shelbyville today bound for
Blighty!
I posted this on the Jabiru owners site after my trip to Norway in a
3300 engined Jabiru 430:
Some info applicable to the earlier Jabiru heads.
I recently changed a set of gaskets as a few were leaking slightly only
to have one blow within 3 flying hours.
Somewhat perplexed whilst investigating I discovered the set screws were
bottoming out in the holes even with the new gaskets so not gripping the
gaskets fully.
Addition of some plane (sorry plain) washers 1.5mm thick solved the
problem.
My suggested long term fix would be to use spring washers instead of the
grip washers Jab supply as they are thicker than the thin grip washers..
Mind you I don't think soft iron plan washers will come loose either
giving how well the set screws were held in when I started.
The situation is marginal and the single bolts were the worse as the
manifold plate is thinner on the side with the single bolt hole than
where there are the two side by side.
I think the engine was about # 300, the type with the 3 into one pipe.
Talking with a Jab engine guy he's seen it once before on a similar
vintage engine.
The most annoying part was I was halfway across Belgium at the time and
had to take a day out to get spare gaskets.
I suppose I shouldn't have set off straight after changing the gaskets
but we'd been waiting for a while for the right weather and after a
permit inspection the leaks were found.
Key pictures of the trip attached with GPS track, you'll note the divert
back to Antwerp to return some tools and as a test flight before heading
off on a 3.5 hour leg to Denmark.
That never happened due to a front North of Hamburg so after two nights
in Liege we had another delay, turned back three times before going into
Groningen in Northern Holland.
Last day was a belter, Holland over Germany to Denmark, 35 mins on the
ground, past Copenhagen to Gothenburg in Sweden, 45 mins and then up the
coast of Sweden over the South of Norway in to Stavanger.
The last leg across Norway was a little 'whiter' that I had
expected......I thought it was spring!
