a tip! Thanks for the great pics Clive! From: owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of James, Clive R Sent: Wednesday, May 13, 2009 2:44 AM Subject: Lightning-List: I was wondering if it was broken.....some news and a tip! Was thinking of sending a test note. All my bits for the Esqual upgrade left Shelbyville today bound for Blighty! I posted this on the Jabiru owners site after my trip to Norway in a 3300 engined Jabiru 430: Some info applicable to the earlier Jabiru heads. I recently changed a set of gaskets as a few were leaking slightly only to have one blow within 3 flying hours. Somewhat perplexed whilst investigating I discovered the set screws were bottoming out in the holes even with the new gaskets so not gripping the gaskets fully. Addition of some plane (sorry plain) washers 1.5mm thick solved the problem. My suggested long term fix would be to use spring washers instead of the grip washers Jab supply as they are thicker than the thin grip washers.. Mind you I don't think soft iron plan washers will come loose either giving how well the set screws were held in when I started. The situation is marginal and the single bolts were the worse as the manifold plate is thinner on the side with the single bolt hole than where there are the two side by side. I think the engine was about # 300, the type with the 3 into one pipe. Talking with a Jab engine guy he's seen it once before on a similar vintage engine. The most annoying part was I was halfway across Belgium at the time and had to take a day out to get spare gaskets. I suppose I shouldn't have set off straight after changing the gaskets but we'd been waiting for a while for the right weather and after a permit inspection the leaks were found. Key pictures of the trip attached with GPS track, you'll note the divert back to Antwerp to return some tools and as a test flight before heading off on a 3.5 hour leg to Denmark. That never happened due to a front North of Hamburg so after two nights in Liege we had another delay, turned back three times before going into Groningen in Northern Holland. Last day was a belter, Holland over Germany to Denmark, 35 mins on the ground, past Copenhagen to Gothenburg in Sweden, 45 mins and then up the coast of Sweden over the South of Norway in to Stavanger. The last leg across Norway was a little 'whiter' that I had expected..I thought it was spring! <<Norway Trip GPS track.JPG>> <<0a-first leg diverted to Calais poor viz.JPG>> <<0-Coasting in beach at Calais.JPG>> <<1-RAR workshop Antewerp.JPG>> <<2-Front in NW Germany.JPG>> <<3-Shirley enjoying the sunshine.JPG>> <<4-Norwegian terrain after 30 mins.JPG>> <<5-Norwegian terrain after 40 mins.JPG>> <<6-deep coastal Fjord.JPG>> <<7-Stavanger comes into view.JPG>> <<8-Stavanger even closer.JPG>> Regards, Clive Clive R James Harding OIM, BP Exploration Operating Company Limited, 1 Wellheads Avenue, Dyce, Aberdeen AB21 7PB Tel: +44 (0)1224 772982 Fax: +44 (0)1224 834896 e-mail: clive.james@bp.com INK saving ECO SANS FONT used, <file:///\\www.ecofont.eu> www.ecofont.eu BP Exploration Operating Company Limited, a company registered in England and Wales with the company number 305943 and VAT number GB365678995 and whose registered office is Chertsey Road, Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex TW16 7BP

Yes, the list has been quite for some time. I just assumed everyone was enjoying beautiful spring weather and flying a lot. Well that and catching up on being gone to Sun N Fun. Today I hope to get an oil change done on the homebuilt, along with a head torque and valve adjustment. Might even get one done on the Cub as well. On another subject, I have a request for all of you. The last issue of the Lightning newsletter (May) pretty much exhausted my Lightning photos and articles, so if there is going to be an informative June issue, I desperately need some inputs from you guys. One thing I am working on is an article on the 40 hour test program that I have been using for some time, so if you have inputs on that, or any other Lightning related informative "stuff", now is the time to send it in. I do have a short follow up article by Johnny on his "explosive" wing preventive mod, so you can look forward to that. But please send in anything else you want included in the June or July issues. I assume August will be easy with Oshkosh coverage as the main topic. Again, please send any input directly to me. If you send it to the list, I probably will not put it in the newsletter since it will have already been read by everyone. Thanks and Blue Skies, Buz I **************Dell Mini Netbooks: Great deals starting at $299 after instant savings!

Hello Wayne I haven't been on the site lately. I've been dealing with gas tank problems. The sealant used in the gas tanks has mostly delaminated. Needless to say, I haven't been flying either. I'm not happy. Good to hear from someone.
