Thanks. Next question, how long should I make the end on the exhaust that comes out of the cowling? Currently it's 10" out of the bottom of the cowling which puts the tail pipe 6.5 inches clear of the fuselage belly. I figure I can trim some off, after flying my Jabiru with hot feet for 10 years I'd like to avoid that but minimise the protuberance (big word...). Thanks again guys, Regards, Clive -----Original Message----- From: owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com [ mailto:owner-lightning-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of N1BZRich@aol.com Sent: 30 June 2009 14:31 Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Clearance between cowling and exhaust pipe Clive, I would also recommend 1/4" as Nick suggested. Remember the engine will actually move around a little in flight as you pull Gs. Those rubber shock mounts really help to reduce any major vibrations from being transmitted to the fuselage, but they do allow the engine to move around some - as they were designed to do. The exhaust tunnel that Nick mentioned really does look nice and gives a great finished look. Might even add at least 50 knots. ;-) Buz ________________________________ Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes < http://food.aol.com/grilling?ncid=emlcntusfood00000005> for the grill. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:40:04 AM PST US From: EAFerguson@aol.com Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Lancair Folks Know the Lightning In a message dated 7/1/2009 1:23:39 P.M. Stay cool, Linda Linda, Nick and I met the Evolution team last weekend at Winder (WDR). Interesting story - the Evolution had a wheels up landing at WDR during a demo flight. A factory crew came in and repaired in days. Gear up is a problem we don't have. Earl **************Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes for the grill. Thanks for the story on the Evolution; besides the retractable gear, their high price tag is also a problem we don't have! So, does any one know what length I can make the hoses? To fit my cooler on the other side and they'll be 1.1 metres or 3.6 feet each way, lots of extra cooling but what about the flow business? Any idea of max length, AN6 fittings and hose and the donut bored out with 1/4 npt fittings? Regards, Clive ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 06:37:57 PM PST US From: N1BZRich@aol.com Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Max length on oil cooler feed hoses Clive, In the long run, I think you would be better off moving the battery to the co-pilot's side (the way Esqual should have designed it to start with - but don't get me started on all the things Esqual should have done differently). By moving the heavy battery to the co-pilot side you now have the heaviest weight on the side of the aircraft that is usually un-occupied (when you fly solo) and by putting the oil cooler on the pilot side the oil cooler lines can be much shorter. That is one key to a successful oil cooling set up. Also where possible avoid 90 degree fittings to the cooler to help with oil flow. 45 degree fittings are better and straight fittings even better, but not always possible. Any way, the extra work at this time will result in a more successful set up. My $.02 worth. Blue Skies, Buz **************Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes for the grill. Hi Mark: How is your 601 coming? I don't know if you heard, but I have had to put my Lightning up for sale. They cut back my work about 50% and I can't afford to keep it. I am having Ryan sell it for me and will be looking for something a little more affordable to build. I forget what engine you have on your 601? Hope all is going well with you?
