Hi World Record Earl,
You will be missed - definitely by the fashion police. So be sure to
bring those "world record pants" to the Lightning 3rd annual fly-in on the
weekend of 25-26 September. Some fun activities are planned; like creeper
races.

ALL,
Another beautiful day at Oshkosh. A few aircraft are arriving (mostly
early volunteers) and there seems to be lots of flying activity at Pioneer
Airport and of course all around the AirVenture area getting ready for
next Monday. I still don't have my Gator, so spent part of the morning
changing a fuel filter on a diesel engine. (Once again, engineers don't seem
to
design things with the mechanic in mind.) Then drove up to Brennand
Airport north of Oshkosh to have a look at Stephen Hacker's Lightning project.
Steve flew with Nick at Sebring and decided to do a builder's assist program
with Tom and Al here in Wisconsin. The airplane is coming together nicely
and I will have some photos in the next newsletter. Steve is being
assisted on his build by one of his daughters (Lesley) and also by some Brennand
regulars, Dan Jones and Peter Carlson. The aircraft is painted, the panel
is ready to install, and the wings are almost ready to install. Colors are
white, green and gold (copper) which I obviously think is a great color
combo. The guys here are kidding Steve about being a Green Bay Packer's fan.
But being from Minnesota I am pretty sure he cheers for the Vikings.
Blue Skies,
Buz
Go Cowboys!!!!

Along that note of the Creeper races.most likely a night activity while
cookin dinner and having a few. After a suggestion from Buz and a bunch here
in Shelbyville thinking it may be a good idea we will be holding our first
annual Lightning Speed dash. This will be a dash from SYI to Tullahoma
about 12 miles away or so and back. You will be timed from brake release to
when you fly back over the Lightning Hanger. Yes we will have a ground
observer in THA so no cutting corners!...so anyone interested please come to
the Fly-in and give it a go. Going to figure out a prize for the fastest...

everage as well? Sounds like a great deal of fun. Wish I was still there.

How about a separate class for Light Sport.

To answer World Record Earl's questions about will there be age classes for
the creeper races and will there be a light sport class for the speed dash
- the answer is - maybe. Obviously a lot will depend on how many show up
and or sign up for the various "events". As far as age classes for the
creeper races, to enter you have to be a "kid at heart" but we will probably
not check your IDs. We really haven't even set the various creeper events,
but some considerations are drag races, slalom runs, road courses, and oval
tracks. We might even have 2 person team events with one team member on
the creeper and one pushing. Everything just depends on what sounds like
fun at the time. I suspect serious racers might even bring special racing
creepers.
For the speed dash remember that pure speed alone does not win these types
of races. Other major contributors to a fast elapsed time for the round
trip are accurate point to point navigation, knowing how to make the fastest
180 degree turn without loosing too much speed, knowing what altitude to
fly to get the best performance from your airplane for a trip of only about
30 miles round trip, knowing what climb speed to use to get to that
altitude, and of course knowing what altitude to fly to best use the winds going
and coming on the round trip. I have seen Cessna 150s beat Cessna 172s,
175s, and Cherokee 180s on these type of speed dashes just because the 150
pilot flew his airplane more efficiently on that particular day. However,
nothing is set in stone at this point and we would be happy to listen to any
suggested handicapping procedure.
It should be lots of fun,
Blue Skies,
Buz

Right on Bear. That's the spirit and the type of challenge we hope many
of the other Lightning builders will throw out. Who really does have the
Lightning bragging rights for being the fastest for the next 12 months. And
I am sure Nick and his crew will come up with some unique prizes as well.
Yes folks, this is going to be the Lightning fly in that you don't want to
miss. Fun, flying, food, and good old hangar talk. Heck, you might even
get to see a "Speedo" dash by a masked celebrity. Wow, did you see that?
You definitely need to plan to be at SYI on the weekend of 25-26 September.
Be there, aloha,
Buz
