I got tired of experimenting with the Rotec. It seems like it's a very nice piece
of hardware, but I had spent so many hours trying to get it working better
than the Bing that I found myself missing that other thing I used to do with
my spare time...it's called FLYING!
So while part of me feels the Rotec has potential to be a better solution than
the Bing I don't think I'll be the person to tap that potential. Last week I
removed the Rotec and began the tedious process of removing all the controls and
restoring as close as possible the original configuration of the intake system.
I was suprised when the engine fired right up and idled as smooth as could be.
An hour of running, checking for any loose fittings, double checking to make
sure nothing was rubbing anywhere in the engine compartment or under the panel
and I put the cowling back on and went flying.
It felt wonderful. I still hate seeing the wide spread between EGTs when running
full throttle but I can throttle back to about 145-150 mph and get them nice
and even and then lean further with the Hacman.
So at this point I'm tired of jacking with the engine. Any improvements in performance
will be from aerodynamic changes. Flap bracket fairings are high on
the list, and at some point I'll start playing with the cowling.
But I also need to address the landing gear shimmy when slowing down after landing
first. I've seen discussion of balancing the tires, but the ride is so smooth
at speed that I find that unlikely. There's only one speed, probably between
20 and 30 mph, which causes the shimmy.
I've seen discussion on this topic, but nothing definitive. Go the RV route and
stiffen the gear fore/aft? Thoughts?
Glad to be back in the air,
Bill
