Get well soon, Bill,
Hope you have good results with your wheel balancing. If you take at
look at the March 2009 Lightning Newsletter you will see a short article in
the tech tips section about a racing go kart wheel balancing tool that I
used to balance my wheels. I tried that after Linda reported good results
having her wheels balanced at a local motorcycle shop. My results were
positive, but didn't completely do away with all the shimmy.
I think the shimmy is kind of inherent in the round rod gear leg design,
but as we have mentioned before, lots of other factors can also help or
hinder - tires (pressures and compounds), toe in/out, aircraft weight, and
runway surface. Seem to be lots of variables, but we look forward to your
findings.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Well, within a week, give or take. In my two year experiment with weird
infections, I got a tick bite while in Arkansas the day before Memorial Day
and it quickly became apparent I had picked something up from the critter.
I haven't had as much as a cold in the last year, and suddenly this. Oh
well. I'm on antibiotics that kill everything, including my body's attempts
to digest food. :(
I did get back out to the hangar on Friday and got both wheels balanced.
I was very happy with the balancer, it proved to be ultra sensitive and the
results were repeatable so I felt confident in the balancing done.
In each case, the wheel was light on the side with the valve stem. That
seemed strange, but the red dot and the valve stem were on the same side,
and for one wheel it took 1.25 ounces on the rim to balance it. The other
took 1.5 ounces in the same spot.
I took a couple of short videos, and will hopefully fly tomorrow with
wheelpants off. If all is well I'll put the pants back on, fly again, and will
report on the results.
I sure hope the shimmy is gone. It's the one thing keeping me from taking
passengers right now, because I just don't like explaining it. It's just
enough to be unsettling.
Bill

Lynn,
I put 1 ounce into the nose wheel and did 3 full takeoffs and landings wit
h breaking and taxi back.
the shimmy I've experienced seem not to be there so I decided to put 1.5
ounces in each of the mains. When I got to the left main to remove the
wheel, two of the 3 bolts that hold the wheel rimms together were missing
and the 3rd one was just hanging in place. I was pretty stunned to see
this (as you can imagine). The one remaining one looked as though it had
been sheared off. I did a FOD walk around the local taxi area and found
another piece of a bolt (this one still had the nut in place, but missing
the head portion-appearing to be sheared off as well. Still haven't foun
d the 3rd bolt.
As a result of this, I haven't proceeded with the install of the dyna bead
s in either of the mains yet. More to follow...
I would suggest everyone check their main rim bolts and nuts to make sure
they are secure.

Hey Bear: I guess I missed your message. How did the new type of tire bala
nce work for you?

I couldn't sleep last night, so went flying. When I took off I could tell the
takeoff roll was MUCH smoother. I had high hopes. I landed and was surprised
again at how smooth it felt. No, not my landing, but the airplane when it was
on the mains.
Unfortunately, as I slowed to about 20 mph or so, the shimmy was still there.
Nick once said there was a specific wood piece to purchase from Home Depot, I
believe. If he'll chime in that will be my next step.
The shimmy now seems worse, but only by contrast. TKI has a fairly new runway
and the plane is incredibly smooth on rollout right up until the shimmy, then
it really shakes from about 20-15 mph. I want it fixed even more now that it
feels so good the rest of the time.
There was a 172 in the pattern with me (at midnight!) so I spent the rest of the
flight playing "catch the 172, then extend my downwind." Sure, I could have
flown slower than he did, but the plane is too much fun, especially on a glassy
smooth crystal clear night.
The HID light works well, but I wish I had put one in each wing now.
Nick, any suggestions on that wood strip to change the resonant frequency of the
gear?
Bill

I have about 3 hours at night in my Lightning now, and It's become apparent I'm
going to have to do something to reduce the reflection on the canopy from the
GRT EFIS.
Has anyone else experienced this? I have the brightness turned all the way down,
but the reflection on the canopy is very distracting. I was thinking a simple
shield velcro'd to the edge of the EFIS would work fine.
Anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you address it?

Hey Bear: I am very happy that you found the problem before the wheel
actually came apart. Keep us informed on what you find.

I did try dyna beads on the mains and really did not notice much of a
difference. The biggest effect was by adjusting the tire pressure,
tightening the axel nut so the drag on each main was approximately the
same and going to 6 ply tires. This provided a noticeable improvement
with tracking during taxi and an improvement in shimmy. It is still
noticeable on rollout, however. Dyna bead effectiveness is related to
tire diameter and rotation speed and 20 to 30 MPH seems to be where
they are just starting to be effective with this size of tire.
