I have an AV8OR ACE for sale. I have had it for a little over a year.
I would rather have a Garmin 496 in my lightning. It has Weather WX
and Bluetooth. It works fine.
Make an offer.
Thanks,
Ed

I took my stepdaughter up to visit her dad in St. Louis today. Now THIS is what
I wanted the Lightning for!
I left for the airport at 6:30 this morning and covered right at 1000 miles (roundtrip
from Dallas) and was back at my house before 4:00. Less than 8 hours
flying time, and less than 30 gallons burned to cover 1000 miles! And that was
in less than ideal conditions with some weather dodging, and a headwind on the
way back that was much stronger than the tailwind on the way out.
I tried my best to minimize the headwind though, using O2 and cruising at 16,500
on the way back. I always throttle back enough to get even EGTs across the
board, which meant at that altitude I was only doing about 120 knots, but doing
it on just under 4 GPH. Gotta love flying high, and this bird just keeps climbing.
My Grumman would have required a fuel stop due to the headwind, and the trip would
have ended up taking MUCH longer.
Sign me up for the 4 seat, twin 3300 "Double-Strike" Lightning. ;) Think of it
this way, Arion would sell twice as many engines for each airplane sold! (I
can dream, can't I?)
And while I'm dreaming, I sure hope someone fixes the induction issues I experience.
If I could run full throttle with even fuel distribution, I'd be even happier.
And I haven't even gone into detail about the guys at the airport who came over
to talk to me because the guy who fueled the plane went in and told them I had
come from Dallas and only took on 15 gallons. They didn't believe him. :)

Hey Bill: I agree it is great for long or short flights. I have flown to
Shelbyville from here in Frostproof 3 times now, each time has been less than
4.5 hrs and uses 23 gallons of fuel.

Hi Bill,
33.3 mpg is not bad at all and TAS was good too, I imagine. I've been resea
rching the Rotec TBI-40-S carburetor that would be a perfect fit for the 33
00 Jabiru engine. From all I've read, it provides exceptional atomization w
hich would provide EGT's and CHT's much closer together, and with its easy
mixture control, you can run the engine lean of peak. That alone would save
you about 1 gallon per hour and preserve that pricey engine. That's what I
'm gonna put in mine after I get my kits sometime next month. I'm chomping
at the bit to get started.
Now I gotta find a buyer for my Corby Starlet that was in last month's news
letter.

Soooo, would you like to buy my TBI-40? I'll even throw in the adapter plate that
mates it to the SCAT tubing from the original installation so it's a drop-in
replacement for the Bing.
Plus I've got the AN to pipe 90 degree elbow and 1/4NPT to barbbed fitting so the
fuel line will connect unmodified.
Make an offer.
As for me, I'm back to the Hacman and Bing. I determined from my limited flying
with the Rotec that the fuel distribution problem is not occurring at the point
of fuel intake, it is further downstream. Both the Bing and the Rotec exhibited
the same uneven distribution at higher throttle settings.
And I've run both with a K&N filter in place of the regular intake, so I eliminated
any possibility of swirl from the filter box or the SCAT tubing. I also
tried multiple intakes tubes from the filter box.
In total, I tried 4 different tubes from filter box to carb/TBI. I tried the K&N
instead of the regular intake. And I've tried both Bing and the Rotec. In
ALL cases, the fuel distribution at high throttle settings favors one side of
the engine over the other.
Perhaps if someone will create an intake plenum to replace the Jabiru intake and
combine that with direct port injection then I'll invest some more time adopting
that, but I've spent dozens of hours on the intake and have just decided
to leave it as is. The airframe has more potential than I can wring out of it
with that limitation, but my focus is on flying first and any experimentation
I do will be in the area of aerodynamic mods.
Well, that and the JATO system I'm working on...:D

I suspected such problems with such a short intake system, and I agree that
even fuel distribution would be an issue regardless which carburetor is us
ed in its current designed location. But I also thought that fuel atomizati
on would be better with the TBI-40. However, I have no experience with eith
er the Rotec or the Bing. A fuel injection system is my preference, but app
arently there is none for the Jab, to my knowledge, or is there?
Most aero carbs are under the engine, with a longer intake pipe to the =0Ac
ylinders. Is there space or has anyone investigated putting the carb, Bing
, Rotec or whatever under the engine, like most aero engines? Inquiring min
ds would like to know.
Right now, I'm shooting from the hip without a gun in my holster and I've y
et to receive my kit and engine, but knowing as much info as I can gather e
ven before I start can't hurt.
I didn't know that you had a Rotec carb for sale. That's good info to keep
in mind.
As to the JATO system....I was thinking something along the lines of a high
tow, like they use for model sailplanes. That way, I won't have the drag o
f the JATO pods. Now if I can just find a long enough rubber band... and so
meone to pull it.
