Only to remember to screw it back in when you come down.done that once or
twice engine doesn't like the lack of fuel!

Subject: Lightning-List: hackman mixture unit
I have recently installed the Hackman Mixture control in my Lightning and it
seems to work as advertized. At cruse at altitude its save about a half
gallon an hour as indicated by the flow meter. I would like to know who
else is using this device and what experiences, precautions, etc. that
others have found. Thanks TEX

Smokey
I have an Esqual, installed gap seals, had stick "shimmy" thinking it to
be "flutter". Removed gap seals and all is good, this was happening at
135 to 140.
My question, do you have gap seals on?
Dave

Nick,
I have experienced elevator flutter twice at around 140 knots
indicated. I was told by the Australian agent Dennis, that it would be
a loose tape under the wing.
I have not yet retaped the wing joint yet, but I would like the Mass
Balance figures so I can check the elevator myself.
Can you send me the info please? I will keep you posted on what I
find. Also do you have the mass balance figures for the ailerons?
Should the Lightning have bungie cords on the elevator pushrod to hold
some weight?
Thanks Smokey.

No. Did you experience this or just simply asking?
The prototype was mass balanced at first but when looking at light
sport and saving weight we removed the balances and retested. There was
no evidence of flutter.
We dive test every LSA Lightning to Vne, 180knts IAS ( 208mph) with
proper attempts to induce flutter with no issues. It is required by the
ASTM on every aircraft.

Has anyone had a problem with elevator flutter? Can anyone tell me
the mass balance limits of the lightning control surfaces?
Thanks Smokey

Nick and Buz,
I'm liking the Aussie tape explanation for Smokey's perceived elevator
flutter.
Went roaring out of PHX solo in a turbo 310 doing its post-annual test
flight years back... in a year the 400 series were regularly shedding
empennage (turned out they needed trim tabs on *both* elevators, not just
one). As I pushed over and accelerated toward 200 at cleared altitude, yoke
became a thrashing blur and tailcone a buzzing megaphone. Pulled power and
declared Big M rolling into the 180, getting the always welcome "cleared to
land any runway any taxiway". Vibrations slowed in frequency and lessened in
amplitude during the fully controlled turn and slow descent but remained
perceptible into flare... which began with crash truck guys roaring
alongside pointing and laughing at something I couldn't see from left seat.
A long slender (like six feet by inches) starboard dorsal wing root
aluminum fairing (engineered to reduce interference drag between wing and
fuselage slab side) had peeled back and distorted airflow, I guess
undulating same. It had been put back in place by one guy before lunch who
inserted dozens of screws but hadn't finished torquing all down and didn't
flag it. Chief glanced at area during lunch and signed and handed me the
airplane. I poked and prodded the usual suspects, glanced there, and flew.
Oops. Have brought along the Swiss Army or other multitool since... to
positively check and not just eyeball shyte like that at times like that.
