I am sorry to have started such a controversial thing on the net, but its the right place to air the situations involving flying and the Lightning. Ken's comments were valid in practice, I don't believe he is familiar with the Lightning and its spec.'s. The proper procedure is to have the plane in landing configuration prior to turning final on approach. The glide rate of 17 to 1 is a little tough to slow down when dropping into a 1200 foot strip with 50 ft trees on both ends, and situated in valley in the mountains. The 40 degree flap position sure helps. P.S. On the G5 we deploy flaps 10* at 240mph, 20* at 220 mph and 30* at 180 mph. ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve & Chris Biele Sent: Monday, November 29, 2010 6:40 AM Subject: FW: Flap motor ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Hi Tex, I have had the same probems as you with the deployment of the flaps. I have found it a real nuisance during the circuit to bring the speed back well under the flap limits. As you can read below I have been in contact with Nick to solve this problem. I hope Arion will help us to bring the operation of the flaps to the advertised performance. So far there is 2 choices. I would like to retain the 40 degree settng, but at what cost to us. If you hve a any quick fix please et me know. Seve Biele Kit 35 South Australia ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- From: nick@flylightning.net Subject: RE: Flap motor The 2=94 motor requires longer push rods for the flaps, all other brackets are the same. nick ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- From: Steve & Chris Biele [mailto:bielefam@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2010 6:08 AM Subject: RE: Flap motor Nick., Can the 150 lbs or the shorter throw motor be fitted to the existing fittings? What is the cost of thee 2 units and who pays to bring it up to the advertised flap opertion? Steve ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- From: nick@flylightning.net Subject: RE: Flap motor Steve, We did switch to a motor with a shorter throw at around the beginning of the year. This limited the flaps to about 25 degrees, I believe we covered in detail as to why. However one reason was the deployment of flap at higher speeds than Vf nad the motor not being able to push them out. For those with 40 degrees of flap and the 4=94 motor there is a higher torque motor available. The one you have is rated for about 75lbs, there is one for about 150lbs. These are sourced from Motion Industries here in the states, not sure if you have them over there. I can try and find an equivalent to that in Australia which would work. Other wise I can order one here and send it over.
