Subject: Lightning-List: Newsletter Digest 2008-2010
I've spent the bulk of the last 4 days in the house due to ice and snow.
Yeah, here in Dallas. Crazy.
The weather cleared last night, but a call to the airport let me know
the runway had 12" snow drifts. Hmmm. I think the snow will melt
before I can make those skis I was dreaming about, so I'll be patient.
I got so bored that I went through my folder of Lightning newsletters
and renamed each one so the names were consistent. "LN YYYY-MM.pdf" was
the pattern, so "LN 2010-03.pdf" is the March, 2010 issue.
As soon as I finished that, I went online searching for a PDF merge
utility. I found one and proceded to merge all the newsletters from
each year into a single file. "LN 2008-ALL.pdf" for 2008, etc.
Then I merged each of those into "LN 2008-2010-ALL.pdf"
What's the point in all of this? Well, I was contemplating standing up
a website on AdventurePilot.com that would allow searching of the
newsletters. But it occured to me I'd get 90% of the benefits from a
single file approach with about 1% of the effort. I like that ratio.
I'll probably just merge in the new newsletters periodically, but until
then I can load "LN 2008-2010-ALL.pdf" and search three years of
newsletters easily. I'll name intermediate merges something like "LN
2008-2011-06.pdf" to indicate the latest newsletter in the collection.
If anyone hosting the current newsletters would like the merged PDF of
2008-2010, please let me know and I will send it to you.
And John, nice job on the first newsletter!
