Subject: | Wing angle setting |
Gordon,
The wing root molding in the fuselage is very close to the correct angle. So
what we do is get the left wing set as close as possible to the left side
wing root shape.
A few things to keep in mind here. When setting the wing, the leading edge
must be even with the front of the root shape on the fuse.
If you are have trouble getting the wing to match the root all around, look
for the critical points. The nose of the airfoil should match the root
closely, first 6" or so.
The trailing edge should not be higher the 1/8" above the wing root shape on
the fuselage. It is better if the nose ends up a touch high to keep the
trailing edge no more than 1/8" above the root shape at the fuse.
If the tailing edge were to be set too high, the decalage (angle between
wing and tail plane) would be too small. All though good for speed to a
degree its is poor for stability.
Before taking measurements and setting the right wing, make sure that the
aircraft is level laterally, really doesn't matter longitudinally. IF you
wanted to level is longitudinally the canopy rail pilot side works well.
Ok once the left wing is set, measure out about 18" form the root and place
your jig here. Set a digital level on the top of the jig and take a reading.
Measure 18" out from the root on the right wing and place your jig here. Set
the digital level on the top of the jig and match the angle of the left
wing. Make sure the nose of the leading edge is flush with the wing root LE.
Drill you holes.
The right wing may look slightly different to the root compared to the left.
This is ok, the important part is that the wings are set at the same angle.
We layup a root faring to cover the gap and any difference to the root will
never be seen.
Once you have set the wing angle and before laying up any gap fairings set
your wing sweep as shown in the "Wing Set Supplement" at
http://www.flylightning.net/Owners.htm
Basically spells out my above explanation and then some.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Nick.
In studying the photo of the AOI jig...a couple of questions...
What is the desired angle once the jig is laid on the wing? I was assuming
0, but not sure now that I study the photo more closely.
Is there a set point out from the root to fit/place the jig?
In the photo there appears to be a spacer and a piece of angle on top of the
jig. Is the spacer part of the set up? If so, what thickness for the
spacer? I would have thought that the dimension would have been part fo the
jig layout?
Thanks!
Gordon

Gordon,
Attached is the CAD drawing and PDF for the AOI jig.
Yes the blue tape is for layup of a wing gap seal. We lay the blue tape down
first than packing tape over it.
Glue will stick to the blue tape but not packing tape. The blue tape is so
we can get the packing tape off later.
Thanks

Hi Nick.
I would like the drawing for the wing incidence jig, please.
Also, is the blue tape on the wing root fairing for a lay-up to create a FG
cover to the wing-root gap?
Thanks,
Gordon

Setting the incidence on a lightning wing. This jig works nice and we have a
drawing if anyone would like it.
