Clive, It's amazing sometimes how the wheels of government work. I'm glad you at least now have your permit. Sounds like you are having a fantastic trip around the world!! Send us a f ew pics if you can. Have a joyous holiday. Where will you be celebrating New Year's eve? Sort of took t he joy out of it. Was actually within 10 years of kit receipt though! Thanks again for all the help and encouragement from many people, too many to mention but you know who you are, I am humbled by the assistance. Not fl own the plane though as currently 1/2 way round the world on our round the world trip. In a Technam P2008 in New Zealand today went like this ( oh, behind a Rotax ).... Another good day, left New Plymouth and followed West coast up to Raglan, s trip on river estuary with small town behind. Bridge over the river had kid s jumping off after daring each other. Flight to East coast was at 7500' bu t eventually at 1000 ' to land at Waihi Beach. Cloud base over sea was soli d 800' and cliffs/hills up to 1000. Found a gap to get to coast. Made a few calls and cavok to the North, 20 mind of scud running to blue sky at Whiti anga where we are now. House plots available on the airfield.... On 23 Dec 2013, at 10:51, "Dennis W. I will be seeing you all at Sebring, likely only on Saturday. If y ou need some assistance, I will help out with the newsletter since I have a lready volunteered to take it over after this next one. I have one more se mester left to complete my Master's of Science in Aviation - Aviation Safet y from Florida Tech. So, I will complete the degree in early May of 2014. My jet is almost ready to get back in the air and I hope to fly it to Sebri ng. The electronics were powered up again this past week and everything se ems to be working sans a broken autopilot disconnect switch. I already hav e a replacement and will be doing the Dynon calibrations tomorrow and Tuesd ay, then connecting up the fuel lines and getting the engine started again after a long time sitting in the hangar. I think one of the first articles I will write will be the saga of replacing the center carry through spar s ection all by yourself. It will be great to see you and the rest of the Arion crew in Sebring in a couple of weeks. Regards, Dennis W. The next issue is pretty much ready to be published except to one thing =93 the new 60 HP XS Lightning is not quite ready for flight. Due to a ver y busy schedule and other development delays beyond Arion=99s control , and of course the Holidays, the new XS Lightning will now probably fly du ring the first full week of January 2014. Remember this is not just another Lightning first flight. It is more like the prototype Lightning=99s first flight back in 2006. I=99m s ure most of you realize this new XS Lightning represents a major change fro m the existing Lightnings, therefore much additional development work has b een required to get it ready for the initial flight. The XS represents a h uge change in Arion=99s Lightning aircraft line up of products, so it =99s initial flight requires extra caution and numerous systems check s to insure a successful first flight. Obviously everything firewall forwa rd it totally different, to include a new cowling and air cooling system, n ew oil and fuel systems, as well as new landing gear and cockpit engine con trols. The entire Lightning crew, Nick, Mark, Mike and Jason, have worked tirelessly to make this a successful new Lightning aircraft, so to rush the first flight at this time would be counterproductive. I=99m sure ev eryone agrees. As Nick said in his last email update on the XS, =9CLook for a flight review and Sebring LSA expo report in the next news letter.=9D The key words being flight review; not just a report that the first flight has been completed =93 that will be reported in an email. Like the compl ete flight test report that I wrote for the prototype Lightning back in 200 6, I plan to do the same for the XS using a flight test plan like we did wh en we tested new aircraft or weapons in the USAF. Hopefully I=99ll b e able to get that done prior to Sebring, then my plans are to be at Sebrin g with the Arion crew to help where I can. I really enjoyed flying the LS- 1 in the demonstration pattern last year. At this time, my expectation is to have the next Lightning Newsletter publi shed by late January 2014. Later than we planned, but it should bring ever yone up to date through the upcoming Sebring Light Sport Expo that is sched uled from 16 =93 19 January. I hope to see many of the Lightning com munity at Sebring. It is a fun fly-in and gives us pilots that live furthe r north a chance to defrost and hopefully enjoy some Florida sun before Sun -N-Fun. See you there.
