Subject: | Oil in exhaust pipe |
--> Lom-List message posted by: Jeayers1@aol.com
Hi All,
I visited a high wing homebuilt with a LOM M332C installed on my way back
from Oshkosh.
He had oil seeping out of the slip joints in the exhaust pipes.
In comparing his LOM installation with my RV-3 LOM installation and comparing
various symptoms, he removed the cam case oil drain plug from his cold
engine. The cam case was filled with FUEL and oil. The fuel pump oil cavity also
had fuel in it.
If he had checked these areas after running the engine to warm the oil, he
wouldn't have seen the fuel in these two areas.
The check valve in his fuel return line apparently wasn't working properly,
because there was fuel pressure from the fuel tank to the fuel pump on the
return line side only. However, leaving the fuel valve ON would also cause the
fuel tank head pressure to continuously be at the fuel pump.
He knew of one other high wing homebuilt with the same oil leakage at the
exhaust slip joints. In talking to other high wing homebuilt owners with the LOM
installation, I found another one.
My RV-3 has four individual exhaust pipes. It is a low wing homebuilt, so it
won't have the head pressure in the supply or return fuel lines. It has the
oil valve installed in the engine. I do not have any oil leakage from the
exhaust pipes.
It does seem to me that diluting the oil with fuel is a very bad thing to
happen.
