Subject: | Re: LOM 332 engines in North America |
David,
I would think that is a (very) long shot. There are very few LOM engines
in the USA, particularly the 4 cylinder models and of course you would
need matching engines, not just any 332. Last year there were two
projects for sale with the engines available separately. One was a 332
AK, the other the much older 332B.
I suspect you would need the 332B with provision for a prop governor?
The factory are exceedingly helpful and do great work, but as you say,
they are pricy. There are other facilities in Poland, the Czech
republic, and in Germany that do very good overhauls for less. That
might be your best bet. Another possibility is Pavel Novak in Canada. He
is an ex-factory technician and does LOM overhauls. Of course no matter
who does the overhauls, they still buy the required parts from LOM.
Good luck.

Subject: | Re: LOM 332 engines in North America |
Thanks Steve.
The story is that we had quite strong interest from a group in the USA,
but the need for two new engines, plus freight from Australia to the USA
was a hefty cost problem. I may try Pavel. I tried him for an engine
for myself, but he wasn=92t able to provide one with full factory
documentation, and that=92s what our bureaucrats demand. It is likely
to be different in North America - otherwise I can=92t see how Pavel
would have a business.
We find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. One of the key guys
in our restoration project - the one who owns the aircraft - has been
diagnosed with Altzheimers. With this pressure and in the lack of a
buyer we are facing the prospect of selling the aircraft for scrap.
Incidentally, LOM actually have an OEM customer for new engines - a
Russian company making small flying boats.
Thanks again.

Subject: | Re: LOM 332 engines in North America |
In the US the aircraft would be certificated in the =93Experimental,
exhibition=94 category and as such paperwork for the engines is minimal.
Depending on the engine times, I would think that a strip and
re-assemble is all that is required. The fuel injection system would go
back to the factory but the engine core should be well within the
capabilities go most US power plant mechanics. The factory overhaul
manual is excellent. My guess is that the engines will require piston
rings, possibly valve springs and all rubber components replacing. I did
that sort of IRAN on my engine and it was quite straight forward. The
factory were very supportive.
I would be pleased to help anyone that wishes to undertake the work.
LOM are working on a new light-weight version of the 332 for certain
European LSA manufacturers. It has electronic ignition and the fuel
injection pump has been moved to the former location of the might
magneto making the engine a lot shorter than the =93standard=94 model. .
It also has a much lighter starter and generator. It will be interesting
to see if it make it to production.
Have you advertised the aircraft in Europe? The market in Poland and the
Czech Republic seems quite active at the moment.
