Subject: | Plenum vs engine lifting rings |
Folks,
I am starting the work on my cowl/plenum. Looks like I'll need to remove the lifting
rings from the top of the engine. The bolts are too long to just put back
in and a 4-15 would fit nicely. The issue that I am seeing is that the original
bolts are coarse thread - and I can't figure out what to order - or from
where for that matter.
Any guidance would be appreciated,

Ralph,
You can order the bolts from Aircraft Specialties. They would probably be
glad to look the part number up for you. Truth be told, I don't think some
bolts from the hardware store or NAPA would hurt a thing. Uh oh, I better go find
my nomex underwear!

Thanks for the tip....I'll give aircraft specialties a look see!
Other educated sources say that a coarse grade 8 bolt is sufficient as you have
indicated - fine thread may allow too much torque nd possibly crack the case.

Just a heads up,
I'm not sure how critical 1 or 2 bolts in the top of the crankcase are but I would
be concerned about the higher probability of counterfeit bolts at a hardware
store selling non-AN or non mil-psec hardware.

in reality "they are a lower strength than what's needed to do the job." Lagessie
replaced the counterfeit bolts and brought them to the attention of his division's
Quality Assurance representative.
Lagessie said his concern about safety and counterfeit materials is driven by an
incident that occurred while he was serving in the U.S. Navy: A counterfeit
bolt broke loose from a catapult a powerful device used to launch aircraft from
carriers _ and struck a crewmember, killing him instantly.

LOOSE BOLTS. Outside the U.S., the picture is even more troubling. Crashes include
a Convair 580 belonging to Norway's Partnair charter airline, which disintegrated
22,000 feet over the North Sea in 1989, killing all 55 people aboard.
The cause? Counterfeit bolts and bushings in the plane's tail, according to Norwegian
aviation officials. Investigators, who were able to reassemble the wreckage
in a hangar, said the plane's tail shimmied violently as the bolts came
loose--and fell off in midair. Lawyers for the now-defunct airline deny the bogus
parts caused the crash.
