Subject: | erratic oil temperature indication |
Hello all,
I recently noticed that the oil temp reading in our Extra became erratic and the
indication is jumping between about 160F and 200F.
The high value seems to be at around the level I expect, while the low level is
certainly too low. The needle in the temp gauge (Westach twin indicator for oil
pressure and temp) is not moving slowly but jumping quite fast back and forth.
It seemed to be ok when I warmed up the oil on the ground before an oil-change,
but in flight (with higher oil temps) the problem came back.
Has anyone seen something like this before and can give some recommendations to
what we should look at? Im suspecting the temp probe right now, but as the plane
is more then an hour away from my home, Id rather get as much suggestions
from anyone experienced, before getting lost an endless "trial and error" hunt
, chasing the issue.
Thanks,
Markus

Probe. If you have a connector in line with the probe you might get lucky and
find that is the problem - for that matter look over the probe wire itself to
see if it has chaffed or otherwise damaged.

Almost a topic for the "aerolectric connection" instead of engines. You know the
temp cant jump like that so its the gauge indicating incorrectly. Most likely
a bad sending unit, or unintentional ground in the wiring. Most guages will
peg to high if the wire is shorted to ground. Try wiggeling the wire as it leaves
the sendor and see if you can make it move the gauge. But after a good inspection
of the wiring the sending unit is what I would replace.
Good luck
Tim

Markus
I recently had the same issue on my Mattituck TMX-IO-360 (a Lycoming clone)
installed in an RV-7A - I have the Grand Rapids Technology (GRT) dual
display unit system which includes engine data - I replaced the sending
unit - problem solved - in 515 hours of flight time I've replaced two EGT
probes - one oil temp probe - one oil pressure probe - and one OAT probe -
in every instance replacing the probe solved the problem - possible you
have a bad connector or gauge but most likely it's the probe - not terribly
expensive and easily replaced - at least on an RV-7 - not so sure about an
Extra though - good luck
