I've gone through 2 shower of spark units and am wondering if I'm doing something wrong!!! Is there an alternate unit like a solid state system or something. Is there a problem with reliability with the standard russian unit? J.Pearson

It does not sound normal to burn those up. We seldom replace them. Perhaps your wiring is wrong and it is running too often. It should only be active when you press the start button. I made a few solid state units a few years ago, but the Russian units were so low cost that it did not pay to produce them. You can always use a spare MODEL T coil unit if you have on handy. The T-6 guys also have a unit that most home builders use. George S. Coy President Gesoco Industries Inc. 629 Airport Rd. We stock the Russian shower of sparks and sell 1 or 2 a week and usually don't see any problem with them. Seems like most of them last 20 years or so. Check out the wiring like George suggested and if they are not adjusted properly it can cause them to overheat which can cause the coil to crack. I have seen people not ground them internally. You would think the housing is grounded to the points but you have to have a ground run to one of the terminals inside. But this just keeps them from working. I'm told there is an electronic ignition in the works for the M-14P. Can anyone educate me here? One of the questions I have is if using electronic ignition will have an impact on type of fuel that can be used. Nic

Probably the main thing that has an impact on the type of fuel used in the M-14 is whether or not it has any Alcohol, Toluene and Olefins in the auto gas which are real bad on the internal parts of the carb and fuel lines and even the sealants used on wet wings. My wife is a PR person for a refinery and one of the chemists told her in Louisiana, stations don't have to mark gasoline as having alcohol if the alcohol content is less than 10%. That is when I asked what else was in auto gas as we checked the fuel capacity in our Pups and decided to save a few bucks and use auto gas. The next morning we had swollen lines. We had done a test and could find no alcohol so I thought there must be something else in the fuel that was not real friendly to flexible things. For the amount of flying most of use do the extra buck or two per gallon will not matter if you encounter just one engine out. I think George Coy is working with the factory on an electronic ignition but if it ain't broke why fix it?
