Subject: | Wing Construction |
--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Rcaprd@aol.com
Here is how I built my one piece wing:
I used T88 exclusively, and Ace Spar Varnish #16375. The most tedious
part, was applying 2 coats of the spar varnish, after ALL construction was
100% complete, getting in every nook & cranny between the gussets, with a
small paint brush. I used the 'Single Wrap Spiral' method, as called out
in the AC 43-13, to saftey all the turnbuckles. I used torque seal (small
squeeze tube of thick laquer paint) on all hardware and fittings, so future
inspections through the 10 inspection holes will show any movement. I used
Stits Covering method, with 2.7oz on the wing & fuselage, and 1.8oz on the
ailerons and empenage.
The ribs will now be referred to as 'L1'- Left 1st rib. 'R1' - Right
1st rib. There are 14 ribs on each side. The center rib will be referred
to as 'C', and is cut apart to make room for the fiberglass fuel tank.
All ribs are identical. Build the rib jig to accept 3/4" spars, and so
that the gussets and the upright x next to the spars, are spaced 28 1/16"
to 28 1/8" apart. This should be the exact dimention between the spars,
with the exception of the 3 center ribs, and the ribs where the lift struts
attach. These rib locations have 1/8" plywood doublers on front and aft
sides of each spar, and will have to have 1" spar openings.
Leave the gussets off in 2 locations of each rib. On the lower forward
side of the front spar, and on the aft upper side of the aft spar. Install
these gussets after the ribs have been assembled to the spars. This will
ensure an easy assembly of the ribs to the spars, and a nice tight fit when
it is done.
Other gussets to be left off are on the ribs at the inboard aileron
station. On this rib (L8 and R8), leave the outboard trailing edge gusset
off, for the later installation of the aileron blank plywood (1/16"). I did
not cut the ailerons free, untill ALL wing construction was 100% complete,
including the aileron spars, braces, hinges, horns, cables & pulleys, and
drag / anti-drag cables were installed. After removing the aileron, I
removed the fittings, so as to apply varnish underneith, as I did with all
fittings.
The center section of my wing (forward of the front spar), is designed so
as to allow the top of the radiator tank to be within the wing, behind the
leading edge. Two 1/8" plywood L.E. ribs, are spaced evenly between, and
paralell to, R1 and L1. These sub ribs will accept the 1/16" plywood L.E.
(on top), and the 1/32" plywood (within the radiator cavity). The radiator
was custom made, to be the width between the cabane struts, and I have
forward view below the radiator.
Plans type, barn door hinges are numbered 1 thru 6, beginning on the left
wing tip. The aileron gap was sealed with a piece of 2" fabric tape, before
paint was applied. I also made sealed gap hinges on the empenage, but used a
different method, due to the Vi Kapler hinges, that pivot at the center. I
have pictures of this scanned in, if anyone is interested.
Lots of places on the wing needed to be drilled using Granpap's hand
crank drill (chordless !!), because of clearance reasons.
Cable guide blocks were numbered 1 thru 8, starting at the top left. I
glued 1/4" plywood to the spar, then screwed the guide blocks to the plywood,
so as not to drill any extra holes in the spars.
Jury strut C/L is 37" outboard of C/L of cabane strut attachments. I
estimated the placement of the jury strut attachments by referring to the
picture of the Pietenpol on the 1999 I A M Union Calender.
The 1/8" Plywood doublers, located at the center section and the lift
strut attachments, should have Spaded Ends (football shaped). These doublers
bring the width of the spar to the plans width of 1", and allow the plans
dimentions to be used for all the fittings. These 5 ribs must be made to
accept 1" spars.
The ribs were weighted, without varnish, and the heaviest ones were
installed inboard, progressively installing the lighter ones toward the
wingips. The two inboard ribs are the only ones that are made out of Spruce,
the rest of the ribs are made out of Western Cedar.

Just so everyone knows, there are epoxy primers and there are Epoxy Primers.
I first used Randolph's "Epibond" epoxy primer on my project. While it is
definitely more durable than enamel, it can still be scraped off. Then I
switched to Stits Poly Fiber Epoxy Primer and the only way I've found to mar
it is heavy sandblasting, and that takes a while. It is expensive, but is
well worth the price, if you want your Piet to be around for a few years.

I was fitting my lower motor mount fittings today. I tend to make every
thing fit tight. So, I had to persuade them to slide into place a couple of
times. I hammered away with a rubber hammer and a regular hammer with wood.
When I got done I noticed there was not one scratch or chip in the epoxy
primer. I have used lots of paint over the years and usually ruin my lovely
paint job with the slip of a screw driver or something. I am so glad I bit
the bullet and spent the extra money for epoxy primer. Down here in Florida
we are alway battling against corrosion. I am going to sleep better tonight
knowing I have thrown up a good defense.
Just thought others might want to know the results of epoxy primer.

I didn't install the the plywood on either side of the fuselage and I also left
off the firewall. The fuselage is plenty strong with T-88 holding it together.
Makes it very easy to put in the controls, seat and stuff. I even sit in
the plane and make airplane noises when I don't feel like building. Not a single
glue joint has broken.
Just to let you know how good T-88 is, I don't install the wing rib gussets until
I take the rib out of the jig. The 1/4"x1/2" butt joints hold just fine.

This weekend I laid up my first fuselage side and everything seemed quite
straightforward. So far so good.
I intend to leave off the ply sides to make it easier to fit the internals
and am concerned about the uprights and braces just being end-glued to the
longerons,(I'm using T88).
I have run a length of 3/16" threaded rod through the longeron overhangs at
the front and rear to keep everything together but am wondering if there are
any other things I have to do to avoid an unpleasant surprise when I pop the
fuse out of the jig.
Thanks,

Hi Leon,
Thanks for the tip. I wasn't considering using the Price fuel tank plans,
but I might reconsider. I'm definitely using the 3-piece wing plans,
although it sounds like a handful!
KAP told me that it would be possible to add the door after the fuse is
together (as mine is), but it sounds like you think otherwise & that might
just be 'marketing optimism' on her part. I assume you think it would be
too much work to do properly, if at all, this point. This might just be a
feature that needs to wait until my second Piet, assumming there is one:).
DJ, I realize that a large passenger in the front pit won't change CG -
just a little humor from a guy who was always picked last & stuck in the
outfield for sandlot baseball because of my size - at least aviation is
mostly an equal-opportunity hobby!
Cheers!

got over the Ford Piet. That's why I'm building the Piet. today. (there
are other reasons also). Knowing what I know now, If I were starting out
today with an updated engine I would go with a more updated airplane and
most important UP DATED PLANS to build from. (the Piet plans are awful)
I would look seriously at the GN-1. This may all be for naught, because
like Chuck Gantzer and many others I may have to convert to a Cont.

incase. Leon S. do not archive

If you are looking for a program to do it with, this one was the best (
supplied by someone on this group) Here is the program that I used for
maxed out gross. You can plug any numbers in that you want. ( hopefully you
have windows EXCEL)
If you are looking for a basic explanation of how to do W&B, let us know.
Me or others can explain. When you hear it , it seems like Greek, but when
you really do it, it's really easy.
Let us know.

Leon,
I don't know you and you don't know me so my comments are directed to the
bare wall with no expectant recoil.
After reading your last letter to the list I'm wondering if you are ready to
build an airplane. Your comment about the inadequacy of the plans. May I
point out that no matter how detailed one may draw up a set of plans there
will ALWAYS be someone lacking the building and technical experience to
understand the mechanical requirements which are implied and expected of a
builder. One could be so complete as to tell the builder how to adjust a
cresent wrench to fit various size nuts and bolts or how to hold a spray gun,
angle and all, when painting their Piet. Where is the end?
As for the Piet vs GN1, that's your problem. I chose the Piet plans and found
them more than adequate. My plane is completed and if I had it to do over
again I wouldn't change one nut.

Due to financial needs, I need to get rid of a couple of my projects.
I have a Pietenpol(GN-1) project for sale. All wood parts of the
aircraft are complete, tail feathers, wings, fuselage and a most
hardware components including landing gear, gas tank and most of the
cowl. It does need control cable, lift struts and wheels put on before
covering. I'm asking $4000 with a Lycoming O-145 engine and mount or
would take offers without the engine. I also have two motorcycle spoked
wheels that I was going to use on the Piet.
I also have a Ford Model A engine that has been torn down and inspected
but not yet converted and all parts are included. I'm asking $250 for
the A engine. Here are links to pictures of the Pietenpol.

Walt Thanks for the response. I have a handle on the basics, I should have
been more specific. I need to know what the FAA is going to want to see for
a w/b worksheet in my operation manual. Also I was interested in the work
sheets to do it.
Did you send an attachment or a site, if so it didn't come through. I have
exel at work, I can forward it on.

Ted:
Their varnish is awesome, too. Ought to paint the house with that stuff. I
mis-varnished (is that a word?) some stuff once. I nearly had to sand blast
it to get back down to the wood.
Bert (who has FINALLY finished wing NUMBER ONE) Man' I'll be glad when I am
through with this stupid airplane..........
See you later.
