Now it's gone over my bid limit. Oh, well ;o) If anyone on the list is bidding on this one (and it looks like a nice project), note the placard in the front cockpit, "passengers prohibited". To me, this indicates that the bird needs to go on a diet since it apparently goes over gross with two aboard. The dual instruments add plenty of weight, as does the electrical system with lights and all, and there are a few other things there that look a bit heavy. But again- "it coulda been a contender". Mr. Pietenpol said that center-section cut-outs would affect climb performance. In my Piet I have a "flop" from F&G and up until yesterday it had been unsecured ie. free to "float" while in flight. I noticed that, while flying, I could reach up and pull it down with one finger and that would result in a noticeable nose-up tendency. Yesterday I put a catch on it so it would stay down (aligned with the rest of the wing T.E.) and it occurred to me that not only did the Piet climb better, but I didn't have to use nearly as much aft stick in straight and level flight. Based on that highly controlled and carefully conducted experiment, my conclusion is that Bernie was right AGAIN!! If you have a center-section cut-out or an unsecured flop, you are sacrificing lift/climb performance. All this might not be such a big deal to you who are using the "big iron" but for us in the model "A" brotherhood, every little bit helps. Larry ps. the flop only trailed up about 1/2" prior to installing the latch on it. pps. I just got my wheels back from Buchanan's. I might have to re-do my W&B!!!!!! ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 11:31:55 AM PST US From: John_Duprey@vmed.org Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Pietenpol project on eBay 03/25/2003 02:31:48 PM --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: John_Duprey@vmed.org Oscar: I noticed that also, that bird needs to go on a diet.... But with a but with a good weight watchers program she could be a nice aircraft for someone... Question, if passangers are prohibited what did the builder need a second set of instruments for??? It was registered in 1971 by George Dukes of Vancouver B.C. and according to the official paperwork it has a gross weight limit of 1078lbs. Guessing an empty weight of around 740, with all the toys he had on it, and by time you add 12 gallons of gas(72lbs), you have 266lbs to play with. One average pilot of 170 pounds and you have around 96lbs for the front seat. I'm guessing the empty weight my be a little more than 740lbs. As if they're the ones that didn't fit in back. I'm also wondering about the rear cockpit placard saying "...without a certificate of airworthiness" Maybe it's (and the passenger prohibition placard) are a Canadian requirement during the test phase. If one reads his letters and diary of flying Southwith Pups and Camels at 20,000 feet in combact against the Red Baron it will make flying your Piet much easier. It is a great book and gives his daily experiences of 1916 and 17. Also trys to explain why paarchutes were not used.
