KIP, others.....what is really neat about building the Piet is that there
are no experts. There are only those who have done this before us, with
us, and after us. I had some great help from Frank Pavliga, Earl Myers,
Craig Aho, Steve Eldredge, Tom Bowdler, Grant MacLaren, Brian Kenny, and
Howard Henderson. I took some of their advice, and skipped some. Since
then even after finishing and flying I have seen some great ideas that I
would have incorporated in my plane by Jack Phillips, John Dilatush, Greg
Cardinal, and others. It's a never ending learning process and sharing
that makes this work. it's too easy to wall yourself off from the group
if you get your feelings hurt so don't do it. You are only cutting
yourself off from a great group who are entitled to their opinions. (you
might not have this right in many other middle eastern countries:) So
what if you don't agree with the next guy----keep building, don't get
offended, and squeeze the most out of this list to your advantage. Pick
the advice that you like, pick the engine that you want, pick the color
scheme that you want and give birth to another airplane that was never here
before !!!!

I saw a solution to this that allowed the use of rudder pedals for the
pilot and still protected the rudder from excessive stress.
The builder installed the rudder bar in the front cockpit and rudder
pedals in the rear cockpit. 3/8" steel tubing, in lieu of cable,
connected the rudder bar to the rudder pedals.

After about 6 or 7 hours, I've decided that I might have to do
something about the rudder bar. The only way that you can use it is to
push/pull yur whole legs like on a sled. I'm so used to working the
toes like "flappers" pivoting on the heels. What am I doing wrong?
Thinking of adding uprights to the bar to make them more toe sensitive,
or replacing the bar with standard pedals.
Yesterday I seemed to jam up on the rudder and on landing, the thing
almost got away from me and was up on one wheel and looping to the
right. Scared the crap out of me.
Anyone else feel this way?
I know the bar is good so you don't collapse the rudder horn, but I may
have to change.

Chris Gomez.....I stepped up the tubing size for the gear legs to .083
4130 from Dillsburg's but if I had it to do over I would go to the .065
as the 4130 is stronger than the stuff BHP used back in the twenties. I
believe Steve Eldridge said he built his gear legs out of .035
origionally and got about 150 landings before it started to deform he
replaced them with .065 and it works fine. That's if my memory serves me
right which it doesn't always do.

To add to this idea, I intend to build my tailwheel
just like a sonex tailwheel, with the exception that
its going to look more like a tailskid with the small
wheel built into it, so it will work good on hard
surface and rough sod. and be very lightweight. It
will be direct steering with no break away feature.
advantages will be much improved ground handling,
disadvantage is that you can't spin it around on a
dime.

Chris,
I have a set of Cub plans (Wag Aero Sport Trainer). The Cub gear uses
4130-- 1 1/4 " diam .049 for the front leg and 1 1/8" diam. .049 for the
rear leg. This is a 1400# gross airplane--the Piet is closer to 1200#
gross. Unless you are following the plans exactly, you might even
consider using the Cub type gear.

gear legs call out for 14ga tubing, which is .078 going by Aircraft
Spruce catalog.
Yet aircraft spruce only sells .065, and .095. So my question is,
did you guys step up to the next size which would be .095?

Last week DJ started a thread concerning machined parts and how to make 'em.
Today (slacking off at work) I was surfing the net and found a pretty neat
site. This site is for a fabrication company that has a pretty neat idea (I
am not in anyway associated with the company, I just though you all would
find it interesting too). Basically, you design what you need made, order
it online, and they send it to you. They let you download a free CAD/CAM
program that you draw what you need. The software has all the material that
they stock and knows their machining capabilities so you can't design
something they can't make. Once you get it drawn, the software actually
gives you a price (including shipping) based on quantities and delivery
time.
I drew up a 0.063 thick fitting using 4140 with some holes in it, and found
it was $120 total for 10. Of couse you could order one or 10000 and it
gives you a price with adjusted delivery dates. The neat thing is it took
an hour from download to price quote and I didn't have to speak to a single
salesperson.
I just though this might be an alternate route to getting some fittings cut.

Based on this site for fabricating metal parts I have been planning to make
a site for all parts related to Piets. Not to sell them just list the
names of the people and or companies for piet parts. For example this web
site. some Model A car companies, covairs, wood, instruments, wheels the
list goes on. If anyone has some ideas I would like to hear them. I see
people asking where someone got this or that. a site for nothing but piet
parts would be nice. I placed such an add in the BPA but no one answered
it. maybe they was thinking I was trying make a buck...NOT.

Hello Mike C. The 4" wheel is slightly narrower than the 6", so I had to
get some 5/8 id al. tubing and cut a couple of spacers to position the
wheel directly behind the pivot. No I'm not flying yet. I'm 4 years into
a 2 year project here. I'm about to start building the wings. The rest
is pretty much done. Leon S. Doing the Atkins diet to lighten up my own
tail. ( I've sucked the belt up 2 notches!)

Had a similar idea Del. Was thinking of using a good quality skate wheel
mounted on the end of a leaf spring skid. The bottom of the wheel would
protrude just enough that the skid wouldn't rub on pavement. A slight amount
of free castoring to allow for taxiing turns. I'm already used to picking up
the Tiger's tail for sharp turns. With differential brakes and a big rudder
shouldn't need to steer the tail wheel.

ok... I just tried my hand at it. the software they provide is very basic,
but will work.
I have a question though... they only provide 4140 steel. can 4140 be used
in place of 4130 for things like wing attach plates?

For those interested in getting parts made, one of the biggest expenses is
for material. Aircraft Spruce and Dillsburg have 4130 and some aluminum,
but for the sizes of aluminum needed for big parts I found the best source
to be Yarde Metals. They will sell remnants from big companies for a
fraction of their value for new material. I bought BIG (9-1/4" diameter)
rounds of 6061-T651 aluminum for my wheel hubs there for less than 1/3 what

Let me see, are you being sarcastic and saying I should have included you (I
might be mistaken, but I don't think we've met in person), or are you
actually thankful I didn't include you? Anyway, I would like to meet you
sometime. You seem to have a great deal of knowledge of things
aeronautical. One name I forgot to mention that I have met in person was Cy
Galley - I met him in the repair shack at OSH last summer.
I don't know Eric Minnis. Is he active in the EAA? We've got several
chapters in this area - one (506) at Smithfield, one in Durham (I don't
remember their chapter number) and chapter 1114 in Apex, which is the one I
belong to. Do you know which airport he flies out of? I fly from Cox Field
in Apex and RDU (Raleigh - Durham International).

If you need oddball sizes and materials, you should try Shapiro Metals
in St.Louis, Mo. Their catalog is just a small scratch on the surface of
what they have. They also have large rounds of 6061, although it might
be higher than the Yard, and if you ever get the opportunity to drop by
in person, it is well worth the trip. They even have a salvage carbon
fiber nose cone off some kind of missile.
They carry a large inventory of salvage items, like welding tools
and large castering wheels from heavy carts. Its a toy box of potential
parts.

Just finished re-drawing all my parts with the emachines.com drawing
utility.
after selecting the material and method of cutting (4140, lasercut) I got a
price for all my pieces including shipping. All my wing attach plates will
be about $200. Thats $300 cheaper than all the other laser shops.
I think I'm gonna try this place and see what happens.

Dj, 4140 steel is more of a spring steel and would be
inappropriate to use a a 4130 replacement.

There is a Piet project in the latest(spring) SAA
magazine with Tripacer legs turned around
backwards. All complete including hydraulic
brakes. Master cyl. are attached to the side
brace going from top front of front cockpit to
lower front seat back.( were rear strut attaches)
There is an extra upright to take the stress of
the landing gear as the rear leg is forward of
the rear strut attach point.
I've seen reference to this plane somewhere.
It's being built by the " Three Amigos".
