--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Ken Rickards <krickards@cvci.com> Just updated my web site. Finished the Vertical Fin and Rudder this weekend and glued up my first elevator. I'm still making wing ribs, mainly pre cutting gussets. Both elevators should be finished within the next couple of weeks, then it's on to the Horizontal Stab. If the gods are with me I get to pick up my engine this week, that's when I will have lots of questions for you Corvair owners. Slowly but surely, my workshop is starting to look like I'm building a plane. http://home.cogeco.ca/~pietbuilder/Fin.htm Ken GN1 2992 krickards@CVCI.com

Could you add where the >front of the wing, or CG falls in relation to the fire wall? This would be >most helpful for all people no matter which version they were building. Ted- I confirmed over the weekend that my axle is exactly 20" behind the firewall (just like Sky Gypsy) but with my fuselage being the shorter 1933 version and Frank's Sky Gypsy being the longer 1966 version. Both handle just fine on the ground and during takeoff and landing with this gear placement. I use brakes, Frank does not. (tailskid) I'd have to go back out and measure my wing LE aft of the fuselage but I can tell you that my wing is slanted back 4" aft of vertical with regard to the cabane upright struts. We all have to place the wing in a position that suites our needs best--engine choice, pilot weight, tail weight, etc. Even among the 65 Cont. crowd I can cite 3 different Piets w/ 3 different wing slant-back measurements. Steve E. in Utah has his wing back SIX inches. He's bigger than me by a bit. Mine is 4" aft, and thin Frank w/ no tailwheel has his wing back something like 2.5 or 3"....so gotta pick the number that puts your CG right. Mike C.

--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Ken Rickards <krickards@cvci.com> The nice thing about building these parts is the almost instant gratification you get, when it all goes together as planned and a day later you have something that looks like it belongs on a plane. A definite mental boost, when you have been building wing ribs for so long!! --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Michael D Cuy <Michael.D.Cuy@grc.nasa.gov> Group-- I just had to order some misc. items and found the Wicks Catalog on line. If you go to catalog index you can look up what you need alphabetically and see pics, description, and prices. Even if you don't want or need to order anything, this is a good place to look-up items, price them out, and in general to do material research. Neat site. I need to replace the bungee cords this year so got on their web site to check it out. If you are concerned about ordering over your computer you can just print out your order and phone it in too at the 800 number. Good stuff. Mike C. http://www.wicksaircraft.com/

--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Michael D Cuy <Michael.D.Cuy@grc.nasa.gov> Man, Walt you are da man ! Empty Wt. of 595 pounds !!!!! Holy moly, that is fantastic. Looks like you'll be able to take an actual full size adult with you for rides this summer even on warm days. Great ! I ended up at 632 lbs. See--that adds up what you said about you moved your Cont. engine out 2" and the wing back 3". I moved my engine out only 1" over plans so had to go 4" back on the wing. Too look at our numbers I would now build an engine mount at 3" over plans and not have to move my wing back as far. Either way, they spell FUN. Mike C.

    Subject: Model-A engine, Southern Illinois
--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Robert Haines" <robertsjunk@hotmail.com> For Sale or Trade - Model A engine, disassembled... A few years ago I bought a Model-A engine for $300 from a guy who was getting out of his car hobby. I got an engine with everything needed for a conversion and I was going to put it in a Corbin Super Ace. Things like transmission bell and exhaust manifold weren't included but the carb, intake manifold, waterpump, etc. are. I stopped construction of the Super Ace realizing I started the wrong project and there the engine sat. Regardless, out of boredom, I took the engine apart a few months ago. It seems to be a decent engine, but I have to assume that it had a problem with the number two cylinder because that cylinder is sleeved. Also, the two water jacket holes adjacent to that cylinder has a crack stopped by drilling at the end of the crack and inserting a plug. It's fairly small and seems to be a quality repair. I don't know if this would be detremental to a rebuild since a rebore would be in order anyway and the crack is small and repaired. I would appreciate input from the group. Anyway, it's taking up space in the garage and I'm not going to use it, so if anyone in the neighborhood is interested, let me know. It's currently disassembled with all parts organized or otherwise tagged. Robert Haines Du Quoin, Illinois (on highway 51 south of Interstate 64)

--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Ian Holland" <iholland@telusplanet.net> I hope that when you laid out the templates for the CNC that you lengthened some of the parts where appropriate. If you did not, then you are going to have a whole bunch that just will not fit. I learned the hard way and allowed generally 1/2 inch extra on the connector holes. Not all need it, but try with a cardboard template first to see if you can in fact get the bolt clearance needed.

--> Pietenpol-List message posted by: "Hubbard, Eugene" <ehubbard@titan.com> BHP is sort of notorious for not leaving clearance between his bolt heads and the rest of the structure. This may not (probably doesn't) apply to the GN-1 plans.
