C'mon folks, it is not a question of what you arrive in. It is a question
of people taking it on themselves to "invite" other airplane groups to hold
a fly-in at a private airport during the Piet fly-in. Brodhead is a private
airport and all of the services are provided by volunteers and paid for,
initially, our of their own pockets. The Brodhead folks are extremely
generous and get understandably upset at uninvited guests. Piet people can
arrive by car, plane (of any type), dogsled, or on their hands and knees.
Just don't tell the RV crowd they're welcome to drop in for an informal
fly-in at the same time.

Jack,
What a great idea. We had 17 Piets for the 70th in 99. Should be able to
double that if the number of newly built Piets show up too.
Doc Mosher, Mike Cuy, Bill Rewey who do we need to talk to (if anyone) and
what do we need to do?
I will be there from South Florida. I got that new foam for the seat
cushion just for this event.
Ted
PS I am hoping to be at Brodhead this year in my Cessna 140. Would be
proud to park next to Chris.

I agree with Ted Brousseau that we should mark the 75th anniversary
of Bernie's influence with some sort of nationally recognized action.
The Piet flyin from Brodhead to Oshkosh seems like a good way to do this,
as such an event will be covered not only by "us guys" (Piet people), but
by EAA and the national sport aviation press. This leverages the amount,
and perhaps the quality, of the news releases.
I will get in touch with the EAA people to see if this can be a reality,
and will report back to the group.
Once we get on the list with EAA, we can start to call on Piet people to
put it all together.
The last Piet flyin to Oshkosh was very well done. A few key people, but
no committees. And it was a lot of fun! The Piet group got a lot of
press. Even made some new people realize that the Piet is out there, ready
to be built in your own garage!

regardless of how many other type aircraft visit the Pietenpol Fly-In how
many of US will actually fly our completed
Piets there ? We stopped going to Brodhead a while back because this big
hyped-up event was fizzling out quickly
with sometimes only two Piets showing up and the rest back in hangars in
dusty stages of completion. Nothing wrong
with only two Piets showing up, but it would be great if we could get
more. Walt Evans is right----it takes quite a bit
of human endurance to fly a plane like a Piet more than two hours at a
stretch on long cross country flights. Everybody
wants a ride in a Piet at Brodhead too and with two or three planes it's
not easy getting to everyone. What we really
need is for people to pull up their boot straps and show up with flying
Piets like they used to do in the early 90's.
I know there are a bunch of you in the trenches who will be flying by next
season that want to make the 75th Anniversary
thing even bigger than our 70th gathering wether it be at Brodhead and or
Oshkosh and that is great. For the rest who like
to just jaw flap, get to building.

OK, I kind of figured that somebody would read only part of my post and go off
half cocked so.....
The intent of my letter was to plead for those of you who might be "movers and
shakers" in your area to NOT invite your assembled squadrons and legions and wave
after wave of
your group from some distant location and suggest that Brodhead might be "just
the place" to assemble so you could then all fly into OSH together.
I'm certain that if you would look again at my posting, you would realize the intent
was never to suggest excluding anyone from alighting at the fabled Brodhead
airport. It was merely an attempt to not have it become a parking lot for
the sizeable N. Cal. contingent that over-ran the property last year.
Be sure of your aim before you shoot.

Gene, and others,
As part of the "sizeable N. California contingent" which came in and
"took over" the Pietenpol Fly-in, I'd like to state that I came because I am
a Piet enthusiast, a potential builder and thought that we were welcome. The
tone of the comments I'm reading now, from other Piet enthusiasts makes me
question the attitude of those folks. I have always been attracted to the
Piet, and to the type of people who have been similarly drawn to it. I have
attended Brodhead Fly-ins on three occasions, and been made to feel welcome.
I hope that this group is not going to adopt the attitude that "outsiders"
are not welcome. That would be more than sad.

JEEEEZZZZZZ . . . I don't know about anybody else, but I did not adopt any
"tone," I was trying to correct those who thought that it was not OK to
come to the Piet Fly-In in anything other than a Piet. I SPECIFICALLY said
that it does not matter what you come in, as long as you get there. I
merely pointed out that, according to a number of my friends who live in
Brodhead and volunteer for their fly-ins, they do not want people telling
other groups of airplane owners to drop in and adopt the Piet fly-in as
their own. IF YOU ARE A PIET PERSON, OF COURSE YOU ARE WELCOME.
I didn't have "an attitude" before, but I may be getting one.

i'm well along with the parts for the Center Section now, and just recently
reread the Construction Manual. In Bernie's write-up, Converting the Corvair
Engine, he brings up some of the changes he made and/or recommends. He
suggests making the cabanes 4 inches longer, and slanting the wing back 3
inches. (Page 54).
I've already cut my cabane materials for 2 inch extensions, and have designed
the flop with a dog-leg. Great for the pilot, but a couple more inches under
the wing would sure help[ the passenger(me)!
Just starting on the motor mount. I'd like to extend this out a little bit
too. My Corvair will have a starter a la W. Wynne. How about 4" forward for a
start?

Matt & Gene,
Are yours A Model powered or Continental? I think a flight of three would
be great. Since you are both in Virginia, are you planning on coming down
to Kittyhawk in December for the 100th anniversary celebration? I'm trying
desperately to get mine flying in time to fly it there. I've already got my
parking spot reserved.
Oh well, just came up from the basement to get the PolyBrush fumes out of my
lungs. Back to covering.

This is going to be my first trip to Brodhead - I hope it's memorable. I'll
be driving since it's too far to crawl.
As long as the Brodhead flyin precedes Oshkosh, there will always be the
chance that some groups will see it as a natural 'rest stop' - I guess I'd
tell large groups that if a 'rest stop' is all it is to you, please find
another airport. If, however, you share a passion for this amazing old
creation, then I don't care how you get there. Of course, I'm sure the
organizers wouldn't mind a few shekels thrown into the hat by whoever drops
in to help offset the costs.
Regards,
Kip Gardner

Mike,
I am planning to bring my "Mountain Piet" to Brodhead this year.
So far, with the turbo'd Subaru engine, the performance has been outstanding
at this altitude. In fact: some of my friends are suggesting that I should
install a 55 gallon drum of fuel in the front cockpit, oxygen for the pilot
in the rear pit and then file a flight plan at 17,500 VFR direct to Brodhead
using the Jet Stream, thus establishing a altitude and speed record for
Piets o):!
My only concern with this scheme is bladder capacity.
What do you think?

It seems natural that if you already know about Brodhead, then you're probably
more than welcome and will have a great time (or so it sounds), but if someone
has to be told about it because they haven't been interested in Pietenpols already,
then maybe they would have more fun at the Wittman or RV or whatever other
gathering anyway. I plan to drive up in my little blue Honda Element (a spam
can of a different sort) and hopefully camp so that I can see (and maybe ride
in) some Pietenpols up close. It is always nice to see ANY airplane anywhere,
but I have my poor little mechanically-challenged heart set on seeing (and
hopefully building) a Pietenpol. You guys seem like a nice community to be
a part of.

Regards,
Kip Gardner

Mine will be model A powered. I am trying to take my Travel Air to Kitty
Hawk, depending on the weather, of course. I have not made a reservation
which may be a mistake, but I am friends with the guys building the replica
that is to be flown and they have listed me as a support vehicle. I don't
know about anywhere to stay.

About the Brodhead capacity for Piets et al,
It would be rather nice to have an opinion from one or all of those nice
Brodhead hosts on the subject.
Not this year but the next and future. Have you considered how many old farts
will be motoring, airwise, to Brodhead after those beauros finally give in
and pass the Sport Pilot issue. Many, many will show up and expand the light
plane family to sizes only dreamed off recently. There are thousands of ole
pilots who are DISCOURAGED from flying light aircraft because of some minor
physical impairment declared major by those semi-quacks in Oak City. Give us
a chance and we will put a light airplane over every community every Sunday
afternoon, something the good ole U S A hasn't seen or heard for generations.
Get ready Brodhead, here we come. Don't expect to hear too many Unicom
transmissions as most of us are deaf.
You know who in you know where

Steve,
I thought we agreed that, although the GPS said I flew further, you came a
longer distance because my route was flat and you had all that up and down
distance going over those real mountains. <grin>
Glad to hear you are coming again next year. Looking forward to it.
Walt, the good news is that the first 2 hours is the worst part of the trip.
I don't know if you get use to it or just numb but it all starts becoming
acceptable. In fact, by the time I landed 2 weeks and 62 landings later I
hated to have to get out of that cockpit knowing that I wasn't getting back
in it the next morning. Kind of grows on you.
