But it might get so thick that it ruins the look of the gear - which is what the wood V idea is all about. I'll have to sketch this out and think about. Meanwhile, I'm close to testing a laminated tail spring. I've been slowly steaming and bending three pieces of poplar into the right shape. If it's dried out enough, I'll glue it up tonight. I'll let it dry for a few days and then I'm going to jump up and down on it. At 180 pounds, I should exceed the loads it would experience in landing. If it survives, I'll report to the list. Let us know how it turns out. I forgot--are you doing a skid or wheel? A steel shoe seems like it would work fine for a skid--a wheel could have the same design challenges as the main gear. (Only sharing to get all tastebuds going). Corky, while down at Fort Walton Beach Fl, on the panhandle, Stopped in the "Crab Trap" for a dinner. Never had Gumbo before. It was out of this world! As a nieve northerner from Joisey, can I ask?, except for restarants, where can you get Gumbo for home? Is it available in cans? Do you have a recipe that you would share? This had pieces of fish and clams(I think) and shrimp. Along with all the Deelish other stuff. Please, what's the story on Gumbo?? Please, do not archive! walt evans NX140DL ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 03:57:02 PM PST US From: Isablcorky@aol.com Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: way,way off topic on flying --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: Isablcorky@aol.com Do not archive Walt It's certainly gratifying to learn that our friends from the nawth are beginning to learn something of the better things in life, especially something better than meat and potatoes and rice pudding. During WW II I used to hop on the mess Sgt as to why he never had any rice and gravy with that roast beef. He would say that the master menu, made from the Pentagon, provided rice for pudding only. Later when I became the Company commander things changed. Walt, I'm not a chef but I do have some fine La recipes. My mother was French and she and her mother cooked for a family of 15. She could make the kitchen smell great. I inherited the taste for good La cooking without those fine recipes. What I think I'll do is scan a few and send them a few at a time. It takes more than a recipe. You need patience and a concept as to what you want. I think a gumbo would be a nice place to start and in so much as chicken is abundant I would suggest you try a chicken gumbo. Real simple and gooooooooooood. I'm just before taking my bride out to the cafeteria to get some meat and potatoes, but as soon as I return I'll send you some info. In the meantime try looking up some info on how to make a roux Corky, the Cajun in La Do not archive ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 06:53:24 PM PST US From: BARNSTMR@aol.com Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: way,way off topic on flying --> Pietenpol-List message posted by: BARNSTMR@aol.com Walt, You might not WANT to know what dey put in 'dem gumbo dawn in Loozana! I logged .5 hrs today in LH seat of a 1937 Taylorcraft BC-65. BeeeeeUtifull weather down here in Texas. Flew formation with the mosquitos just before sundown. Not a cloud in the sky...barely a puff of wind in the cool evening. What a way to enjoy all of God's creation. Not the same as a Piet....but helps me keep the enthusiasm up. This past weekend, I set out on a mission to lighten up the Piet by carving out some portions of the massive 1 inch plywood firewall installed by the original project builder. I think I am going to end up trimming around 4 or 5 pounds. That is assuming I am able to get all the sawdust out of the belly. I hope to start cutting instrument panel holes this coming week. Now, I just need to put myself on a weight savings program. I did make some progress today too....scrounged up all the landing gear bolts....finally getting the gear back together after massive re-work. We now have a new spring gear similar to the Hatz design. My partner Lon did the welding and has really mastered the art. We purchased springs from McMaster Carr after a lot of enthusiastic guidance on spring selection from several of you on the list. Thanks guys. Lon has also been tinkering with the throttle installation and its going to be a modified Hatz design too. One of these days if we keep on tinkering with all of this, we'll get there. Terry, Now you know flying. Wish I was down there now for the decent weather. Pre-war Taylorcraft is the best. And I knew better than to sneak out and do it. I had to wait until I turned 16. Here I am twenty some years later and my father in-law is considering buying a Taylorcraft BC-65 and for me to teach him to fly in it. Life is good.
