Subject: | .090 4130 question |
Does anyone know about what size .090 (13 gauge) 4130 sheet I would need for
my entire Piet project?. Was going to order some .090 sheared to 5/8" for use
on the tail feather fittings but neither Wicks or AS shrears it that small so
I figured I may as well order enough for the whole airplane.
Also, the tail center brace fittings on the plans are labeled 12 gauge rather
than 13 gauge like most of the rest, does everyone just use 13 gauge for that?
Thank You
Rick Holland

Is anyone else getting posts from DJ that look like they're in Cyrillic? Everyone
else is fine but his are undecipherable. I'm in the "digest" mode if that makes
any difference...........

Chris,
Sure, no problem. As long as nothing changes with the status of the airport, I
figure they will be there for a long time. I think mine were the rear (smaller)
off a Cub. Sinse the Piets are shorter, cut a good piece off each end. They
still had residue of the oil in them. There was slight surface pitting though.
My Mentor gave them his blessing. I THINK I paid $20.00 each, (may have
been $10.00)
Might be easier giving you the infro. on the airport, this way it won't confuse
the issue with me being the middle man. The owner/manager is in his 80's, and
even though a nice man, you may not want or expect him to go rooting through
the hanger cielings. So when the time comes I'll be glad to meet you up there
and show you where they all are.
The owner/mgr is Paul Styger ( He's usually there most every day)
Airport number is:
Sussex Airport 973-875-7337 or 973-875-0783
53 county highway 639
sussex, nj 07461
If you or anyone on the list is interested,,,,,,,let me know if I can help/let
me know and I'll meet you there.

Walt,
I need to drive my honda from CT to MN in the fall. Do you think you can set
me up with a set of struts when I come through?

Got mine from the rafters of a local airport. Was put up to it by another
homebuilder. There were hundreds of them. Didn't want to just take them, so
went to the Mgr and made a deal. After cutting off the top and bottom, the visual
inspection showed they were clean. sure beat $15.00 per foot for new.

I think he's asking a bit too much but maybe if someone was interested they
could email him directly as strike a deal.

Wicks has sheared 4130 for me down to 1/2" wide. They ask which way to orient the
grain and then they cut it. Even on saturday mornings they have.

I found a 65 Covair at the junkyard for a hundred bucks, only catch is I have
to pull it out of the car. I have pulled bug engines before and have all the
tools to do that. Question is do I need any special tools to pull this engine?
Also, does anyone know if you can read the engine block number while still in
the car? I have WW's manual.

Standard SAE wrenches and sockets are all you need. The Engines drop out the bottom---Jack
the rear of the car and place on jackstands, undo all the bell housing
to transaxle bolts you can get to, disconnect the starter, with the engine
on an engine jack remove the rear motor mount, lower the engine about 6 inches
and you can get to the top bell housing and starter bolts. Well a little
more than this but you can get the gist of it. Yes the block #'s are located
just forward of the oil filter/fuel pump casting.

Yes, DJ posts come through the Digest as gibberish. I figure he was being scrambled
by BIG BROTHER (Aircraft Spruce) as they are probably trying to squash him
ever since THEY tried to get him to use substandard parts in his aircraft.............

yep.... for some reason the digest screws up my posts. I have emailed Matt
Dralle and inquired but got nothing back from him.
I do have an idea as to why.. I will try the fix with this post. If
someone gets their Piet list mail in digest form and is able to read THIS
message please email me off list. I'd like to see if this works.
djv@imagedv.com
PS.. funny comment about Aircraft Spruce! I've calmed down over that and
have ordered from them since, BUT only basic parts like AN bolts,
turnbuckles, etc. NEVER will I order special order stuff from them again...
especially cables that if they fail will be fatal!
